Description
Château La Fleur de Gay was founded in 1982 by Jean-Pierre Moueix, a prominent winemaker in Bordeaux. The aim was to create an exclusive cuvée from the best plots of the family estate, Château La Croix de Gay. The domain is owned by the Raynaud-Lebreton family, who have been involved in wine growing in Pomerol for generations. The vineyards of Château La Fleur de Gay are located on some of the best terroirs in Pomerol, including the famous "Plateau de Pomerol". The vineyards cover approximately 2 hectares and are planted on clay and gravel soils. These soils are ideal for growing Merlot, the dominant grape variety in Pomerol.
The vineyards are mainly planted with Merlot (almost 100%), although small amounts of Cabernet Franc may be used depending on the vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Fermentation takes place in small, temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks to ensure maximum control over the process. The wine matures for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels. This maturation contributes to the complexity, structure and finesse of the wine.
The Château La Fleur de Gay is such a typical little pearl. Not a mass producer, but only a few thousand bottles of a very high level of Pomerol, which has clear similarities in style with wines from the Moueix stable (Petrus, La Fleur, Hosanna, etc.) but at a very acceptable price. The La Fleur de Gay is a very elegant wine with depth and complexity. The nose shows aromas of ripe red and black fruit, such as plums and cherries, as well as notes of cedar wood, truffle, chocolate and spices. In the mouth a full taste with a big, rich taste and lots of fruit and toffee.

Sumptuous and polished, the 2019 La Fleur de Gay bursts with aromas of blackberry preserve, loamy soil, mocha and toasty oak. Full-bodied, broad and dramatic, it's a rich, low-acid Pomerol with a sweet core of fruit, powdery tannins and an expansive, somewhat heady finish. It will be at its best young.

Dried berries with dried spices, such as nutmeg and hazelnut, highlighting the whole thing. Full-bodied with a big, rich palate and lots of fruit and toffee. Oak spotlights it all. Give it time to open. Best after 2025.

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 La Fleur de Gay was a little perplexing in barrel, but in bottle, the aromatics have achieved more delineation and focus, offering slightly earthy red berry fruit laced with cedar and clove. The medium-bodied palate delivers sappy red fruit laced with mocha and white pepper, good weight, and just a little alcoholic warmth on the finish. But this is better than I expected, so I am keeping the faith.

From: 2019 Bordeaux: A Long, Strange Trip (Jun, 2020)
The 2019 La Fleur de Gay is soft and supple. The ripeness of the vintage comes through in the wine's racy, fruity personality. Jammy and dark-fruited, with notes of leather and spice, the 2019 is not especially complex or nuanced, but it offers a good deal of immediacy over the near-to-medium term.
