Description
Duhart-Milon is one of the most prestigious châteaux in the Pauillac appellation. In 1855, the château was included in the famous classification of Médoc wines. The château is now part of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) group. The history of Château Duhart Milon dates back to the early 18th century, when the owner of Château Lafite, Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, used Milon wines as his 'second wine'. Around 1840, the château, now called Duhart-Milon, already owned 40 hectares of vineyards of the highest quality. After a difficult period in the middle of the last century, Duhart-Milon became the property of the Rothschild family. A new period of great prosperity began.
Château Duhart Milon is located in the Pauillac appellation, on the west side of Château Lafite-Rothschild. The château currently has more than 70 hectares of vineyard. The soil is very typical of the region and contains a mixture of fine gravel, sand and lime. In combination with the mild climate, this is an ideal place for cabernet sauvignon, which is the most important grape here. The château also uses merlot and cabernet franc. The average age of the vines is over 30 years.
The close collaboration with neighbor Château Lafite-Rothschild has led to an enormous boost in quality. Typical characteristics are: low yields, manual harvest, classical vinification and a great sensitivity to the individual character of a vintage. This leads to very high-quality wines that reflect the special character of the Pauillac appellate: a combination of power, elegance and a unique ability to ripen. The wine matures in oak barrels from our own cooperage. The vinification for this wine takes place through controlled fermentation in tanks before maturing in barriques. Depending on the vintage, this maturation takes 10 to 18 months.
The Duhart-Milion is a blend of the typical Pauillac composition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and is deep purple-red in color, changing to garnet to brown-red in color. It has a powerful, richly varied scent with notes of black cherry, blackberry and cedar and a beautiful wood note. Full, firm attack, very smooth texture and a complex fruity taste with earthy notes, playful tannins, freshness of the Cabernet and an impressive length. The wine is at its best when the Merlot has fully ripened because then the wines get those Merlot tannins, acids and vegetable notes that give the extra complexity. The vineyard borders that of Château Lafite Rothschild (same owners) and Lafite's refined elegance is almost always present in Duhart-Milon, together with spicy wood, vanilla and tobacco notes. The cellars are located at the quay of Pauillac. Of the barrels used there, 33% to 40% are new.

2019 Bordeaux Primeurs Flash Review 2, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Duhart-Milon is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, harvested from the 19th of September to the 4th of October. Deep garnet-purple in color, it springs from the glass with vivacious notes of plums preserves, black raspberries and blackcurrant pastilles with suggestions of menthol, dark chocolate, pencil lead and woodsmoke plus a touch of garrigue. Medium-bodied, the palate is spritely and refreshing, with bags of juicy, mint-laced black fruits and an approachable, plush texture, finishing long and lively.
“The terroir at Duhart-Milon can be very arid,” technical director Eric Kohler reminded me. “Our Cabernet Sauvignon vines seem to have better anticipated the heat this year, preventing them from shutting down in July despite the heat wave. In 2018, I felt that the alcohol was maybe a bit high. I like the balance better of this 2019.” I feel the 2018 vintage of Duhart-Milon is hard to beat. The generosity of fruit and plushness of the tannins that year were off the charts. This said, while at this stage it’s just a hair behind the beguiling 2018, this 2019 is a remarkable beauty, seeming to confirm that this estate has well and truly turned a corner in terms of quality.

From: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 (Jun 2020)
The 2019 Duhart-Milon was picked from 18 September to 4 October and raised in 50% new oak. Of course, this comes from one of the coldest terroirs in Pauillac due to the orientation of the vineyard and less proportion of clay, which has become an advantage in warmer growing seasons such as this. The 70% Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the aromatics with dense black fruit, pencil shavings and tobacco aromas, traces of dark chocolate in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with spicy black fruits on the entry. This is quintessential Duhart: a bit broody, conservative in a non-pejorative use of the word, harmonious and quite sturdy towards the finish. I like this. Whilst it has no intention of being the most flamboyant Pauillac on the gravel terrace, it is imbued with nobility.
