Description
about Andremily Wines
Andremily Wines was founded by Jim Binns, a former assistant winemaker at Sine Qua Non. From his base in Ventura County, he creates Syrah wines that are among the very best in California. Since launching in 2012, Binns has built a reputation for unparalleled consistency and detail. His style combines the richness of Southern California with the tension and structure of the Northern Rhône. The wines are produced in small quantities and sold through allocation, making them rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
vineyards and terroir
The grapes for No. 8 come from several top vineyards in Santa Barbara County: White Hawk, Larner, Harrison-Clarke, and Alta Mesa. These parcels are situated on sandstone and calcareous clay soils, which contribute to concentration and refined minerality. The cool coastal climate with ocean influence extends the growing season, resulting in wines with aromatic intensity, freshness, and complexity. The combination of elevation and careful vineyard management produces fruit of exceptional quality and balance.
blend and harvest
The 2019 Andremily Syrah No. 8 is composed of 88% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and 3% Viognier. The grapes were partially (45%) fermented as whole bunches, which adds structure, freshness, and aromatic complexity. Harvest took place under optimal conditions, with a cool autumn that allowed for slow ripening and perfect phenolic balance. Only 840 cases and a few magnums were produced, making this vintage particularly exclusive.
vinification and maturation
The wine fermented with natural yeasts and matured for 22 months in French oak barriques, 65% new and 35% used. This aging enhances the complexity and rounds out the powerful tannins without overpowering the fruit. The wine was bottled unfiltered to preserve its pure character. The production was released as an exclusive three-bottle box set, with some magnums paired with the 2019 Andremily Mourvèdre.
review by The Wine Advocate
The Wine Advocate awarded the 2019 Andremily Syrah No. 8 a score of 97 points. Erin Brooks described the wine as "bursting with pure scents of blueberry liqueur, black cherry jam, aniseed, coffee beans, and soaring violet perfume." She called it "full-bodied, powerful, with a firm frame of rounded tannins and a very long, fragrant finish." According to Brooks, the wine has "loads of latent accents that hint at further development in bottle" and will be "very long-lived in the cellar." This assessment confirms that the 2019 No. 8 is one of the most impressive Syrahs from California, with aging potential until at least 2040.
color, smell and taste
The wine is a deep ruby purple in color. Ripe blueberries, black cherries, and violets dominate the aroma, complemented by notes of star anise, espresso, cocoa, and roasted spices. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, yet surprisingly fresh. The texture is silky, the tannins rounded and refined. The finish is exceptionally long, with aromas of blue plum, licorice, and a hint of coffee. The balance between intensity and elegance makes the wine complex and captivating.
style and storage potential
The 2019 No. 8 combines the energy of young Syrah with the depth of Mourvèdre and the aromatic lift of Viognier. It is a wine of power and refinement, designed to unfold slowly. It reaches its peak between 2027 and 2040 and, thanks to its pure structure, retains its freshness and intensity for years in the cellar.

The 2021 No. 10 is a blend of 93% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 2% Viognier. Grapes come from several vineyards, including Andremily's new Slide Hill estate in Edna Valley, White Hawk, Larner, Harrison-Clarke, Kimsey and Alta Mesa Vineyards in Santa Barbara County. It was vinified with 50% whole clusters and matured for around 22 months in 65% new French barriques. Bottled August 12 and tasted October 25, it boasts a supermassive black hole of dark, perfumed fruit at the core. With time in the glass, it reveals pure accents of mint chocolate, vanilla bean, olives, lilac, tar and botanical nuances. The palate is incredibly concentrated, its graphite-laced fruit waiting to explode. All that depth of fruit is balanced by fireworks of fresh acidity and velvety tannins, and it has a highly latent finish. 900 cases were made, which will be sold as part of a three-bottle box set for $330. A few magnums were also made, which will be sold as part of a two-bottle set with the 2021 Mourvèdre.

The 2021 Andremily No. 10 captures all the potential I sensed last year. Silky and beautifully perfumed, the 2021 has acquired quite a bit more finesse than it showed as a young barrel sample. Crushed dark fruit, graphite, leather, cedar, incense, mocha and licorice are all laced together. Pretty floral overtones and bright acids extend the finish effortlessly. This is one of the best wines I have tasted from Andremily.

These are two very beautiful wines from Andremily that capture all the potential I saw when I first tasted them wines from barrel. It’s hard to believe this small, bootstrapped winery outfit located in a warehouse district in Ventura is now past its tenth anniversary. This is a rare example of a winery that has transitioned from working exclusively with purchased fruit to now owning an estate vineyard. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Andremily and the Binns family.

The 2021 Andremily No. 10 is one of the finest wines I have tasted at Andremily. Vibrant, focused and explosive, the 2021 possesses tremendous energy from start to finish. Dark red cherry, red plum, rose petal, cinnamon and new leather are some of the many notes that build as the 2021 opens in the glass. This is seriously impressive.
- By Antonio Galloni on July 2023
Jim Binns presented a stellar set of 2021s and 2020s. In 2020, Binns acquired Slide Hill (formerly Sawyer-Lindquist), one of the best-known sites in Edna Valley. As good as the wines have been here in the past, my distinct impression is that the move towards becoming an estate winery is having a profound impact on the wines. I see more nuance and delineation than in the early years. Those qualities work well in rounding out wines that have always been built on textural opulence. One change here is that the EABE red blend is being bottled a year later than in the past, so I did not taste it for this report.
