Description
In the eastern part of the Douro, near the Spanish border, we find Quinta do Vale Meão, birthplace of Barca Velha, the most famous and highly praised Douro. The quinta is owned by Francisco Javier de Olazabal, the great-great-grandson of Dona Antonia Ferreira who bought the quinta in 1877. The former director of the port house Ferreira started making wine from this exceptional terroir. Their first wine, Meao 1999, was immediately declared the best Portuguese wine of 1999. It is the most famous quinta in Portugal and is also part of the famous Douro Boys. All the wines they now make guarantee an authentic experience of the Douro wines, of course made from the typical Portuguese grape varieties from the Douro region. Quinta do Vale Meão is one of the top in Portugal and you can taste why that is so!
The Meandro is in fact the second wine of the Vale Meão and is made from the younger plantings. Meandro means: 'in the bend of the river'. The Douro makes a bend at Meão and that is where the vineyards of this domain are located. The Meandro do Vale Meão Quinta do Vale Meão is composed of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barocca, Sousão, Tinta Cão and Tinta Amerela. The grapes are trampled for four hours in granite lagares. The different grapes are kept separate until the final assembly. Part of the Meandro do Vale Meão Quinta do Vale Meão matures in already used French oak barrels from Allier. The wine has a purple-red color. The bouquet gives sun-drenched fruit and a warm spiciness. The taste is full, lively, fruity, spicy, warm and has good length. Delicious with a nice piece of red meat or with a tasty stew.

2021 Quinta do Vale Meão Meandro do Vale Meão
RP 91+
Reviewed by: Luis Gutiérrez
Drink Date: 2024 - 2028
The approachable, balanced and fresh red 2021 Meandro do Vale Meão showed the cooler year, coming through as elegant, fresh and long—a wine with tension, lots of fruit and more complexity and depth than what you expect in the price range. They have been harvesting earlier, doing less extraction and using 100% used barrels, some larger ones and even some oak vats, so the wine is more polished, graceful and balanced.
