Description
The Harlan family have been winemakers in California’s Napa Valley since the late 1970s. Their first endeavor, Harlan Estate, has established an international benchmark for the art of winemaking over the course of nearly four decades. It was in those early days, in the early 1980s, that H. William Harlan discovered another place—an isolated area—while hiking along the southwest ridge of Oakville. The hidden expanse touched him deeply, but remained elusive until much later, when the Harlan family finally acquired it in 2008. The second generations of both the family and the winemaking team came together during this time to explore and work the land, and they began to make discoveries of their own. At the heart of this wild terrain, they found a powerful geological convergence that had shaped the land’s steep, rugged topography and created the conditions for an entirely exotic viticultural environment. Over time, they discovered that the dramatic landscape—just beyond the edge of the known—would slowly transform them and eventually inspire a new venture: Promontory. Eleven hectares of the original vineyard have been preserved due to the interesting age of these Cabernets. Another 16 hectares are still being replanted parcel by parcel.
For your information, Promontory has won two major awards (BWW Competition 2021):
• Best New Winery in the World
• Best Winemaker in the World (Cory Empting)
In addition, the Promontory 2018 by James Suckling, Antonio Galloni of Vinous and Parker received the maximum score of 100 points. You can read all the reviews by clicking on the review icons.

The 2018 Promontory was tasted as a barrel sample. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal a vibrant black fruit core of ripe plums, boysenberries and black currants with hints of crushed rocks, bay leaves, lavender, olives and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate features firm, exquisitely fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, beautifully framing the intense, crunchy black fruits, finishing long and minerally.
During a visit to Promontory in December, I tasted the four latest vintages with winemaker David Cilli, Cory Empting and Will Harlan.
The current release is the 2015 vintage, recently offered on the domestic market with the international offer coming out this spring.
It was an absolute joy to taste the perfect 2016 Promontory again, a wine that Cilli mentioned "so clearly shows the characteristics of Promontory."
Of the 2017 (now in bottle), Cilli said, “We were not able to pick the last few Promontory blocks because of the fires, so it was a very small harvest this year. We had picked a few lots just after the heat spells, and we were able to maintain that freshness in the wine."
The 2018 vintage was tasted as a barrel sample, due to be bottled in early 2021. Cilli said, "We picked for six weeks at Promontory. I picked maybe 90 different lots!" Given the many, incredibly varied aspects, altitudes and soil types at this remote vineyard, this kind of parcel separation is critical to producing a wine of exceptional quality. This 2018 is truly a wine achievement to behold.

The 2018 Promontory is as phenomenal as it has always been, but it, too is going through a period of reticence. This dark, brooding Cabernet is packed with character. Time in the glass brings out striking inner perfume and sweetness. There is a feeling of stark minimalism in the 2018 that I find compelling. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2018 is a magical, exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon.

Promontory is on a slightly later release schedule than Harlan Estate and Bond, so these are the current releases. Winemaker David Cilli has done a tremendous job in giving the Promontory Cabernet a great deal of finesse, especially over the last few years. Although I can’t say it for certain, because I don’t know, my strong impression is that his wines have notably influenced the recent stylistic direction at Harlan Estate and Bond.
