2021 Poliziano Le Stanze del Poliziano is an elegant Super Tuscan in which Bordeaux grape varieties and Tuscan finesse come together. Since the first vintage in 1987, Le Stanze has been regarded as one of Poliziano's most successful creations. The wine takes its name from the Renaissance poem Le Stanze by the famous poet Angelo Ambrogini, better known as Poliziano, who was born in Montepulciano. The result is a classic Tuscan Bordeaux blend with great depth, refinement, and excellent aging potential.
Police
Poliziano belongs to the absolute elite of Montepulciano and has been regarded as one of Tuscany's quality benchmarks for decades. Under the leadership of Federico Carletti, the estate grew into one of the most progressive wineries in the region. His daughter, Maria Stella Carletti, has now taken over responsibility for the vinification, with a new generation building upon the same philosophy of quality.
The estate possesses approximately 155 hectares of vineyards, spread across Montepulciano, Cortona, Torrita di Siena, and Maremma. Modern winemaking techniques go hand in hand with great respect for the terroir, resulting in wines known for their balance of elegance, concentration, and purity.

The Police Station
Le Stanze was first produced in 1987 and is inspired by the great Bordeaux blends, while simultaneously retaining a distinct Tuscan character. The wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, sourced from carefully selected vineyards with calcareous clay soils. The combination of these grape varieties results in a wine of power, refinement, and a remarkably long lifespan.
The 2021 volume
2021 is considered one of the finest Tuscan vintages of recent years. The combination of a relatively cool growing season, long ripening, and healthy grapes resulted in wines with great freshness, aromatic precision, and excellent structure. Le Stanze benefited optimally from these conditions and ranks among the most classic vintages of recent years.
Vinification
After manual harvesting, the grapes are fermented separately by plot in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine ages for approximately sixteen months in French oak barriques, a significant portion of which are new. After blending, further bottle aging follows before the wine is released.
Scent, taste and character
The 2021 opens with intense aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries, and cassis, followed by grilled Mediterranean herbs, sandalwood, sweet spices, and a subtle smokiness. As the wine opens up, notes of graphite, liquorice, and dark chocolate emerge.
On the palate, the wine is silky smooth yet energetic at the same time. The ripe dark fruit is supported by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins that give the wine plenty of tension. Flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, and licorice are complemented by a subtle touch of bitter orange and fine spices.
The finish is long, structured, and harmonious. The youthful tannins give the wine great aging potential, while the elegant balance ensures that it never becomes heavy or sluggish. It is a classic Le Stanze that combines power and finesse in an exemplary manner.
Storage potential
Although the wine will already provide much drinking pleasure after a few years of bottle aging, the 2021 develops optimally between 2028 and 2036. With additional aging, increasingly complex aromas of cedarwood, tobacco, truffle, and leather emerge.

The drive and juicy tannins give length and structure to this wine, with blackberries, blueberries and sandalwood. Medium- to full-bodied with tight and chewy tannin and a long and flavorful finish. A little too much new wood at the end, but lots going on. Try after 2028.

From: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: An Unstoppable Force (Feb 2025)
Dark and brooding, the 2021 Le Stanze del Poliziano grumbles up with an array of grilled herbs and exotic spices before giving way to dusty black currant notes. This is silken in texture yet racy and spry, with polished red fruit tones that slowly saturate as hints of licorice and a tinge of sour citrus add lovely contrast. The 2021 tapers off with tremendous length and structure, leaving sweet tannins and a bitter blackberry concentration that pinches at the cheeks with youthful tension. Le Stanze del Poliziano comes across as very classic in feel.
- By Eric Guido on February 2025
I toured the newly outfitted Poliziano winery with proprietor Federico Carletti and his daughter, Maria Stella Carletti, who has taken over winemaking responsibilities at the estate. Federico Carletti has added a new logistics center, cellar, fermentation room and automated bottling line in an attempt to prepare the next generation for “the next 20 years.” With 155 hectares of vines spread out across the four communes of Maremma, Cortona, Montepulciano and Torrita, an update to their cellars was in order. As for the wines, I have always loved the balance of polish and terroir transparency that Poliziano captures so well. Their Le Caggiole was one of the first single-vineyard wines in the region, followed by the Asinone. On this visit, the 2021 Asinone really stole the show, but that is more about vintage than anything else, as the 2020 Le Caggiole hails from a warm and more elegant-styled year. The 2020 simply lacks the depth and structural haft to take it to the next level. With that said, I look forward to tasting the 2021, which will bear the Pieve classification. Another new release to consider is the 2023 Rosso di Montepulciano, which is a bit of a rare bird. Typically a blend of Sangiovese with 20% Merlot, the 2023 is 100% Sangiovese due to issues with Peronospora. The 2023 vintage saw a 50% reduction in quantity across the board.

Frederico Carletti, the current owner of Azienda Agricola Poliziano, is responsible for a revolutionary change. Carletti has turned Poliziano into a real wine-producing company, which produces and bottles its own wines. He went to Piemonte to learn the profession of an enologist at the university. He then did internships with various wine producers to gain the necessary practical experience. Then it was time to realize his childhood dream. Since taking office in 1981, the company's star has risen rapidly. His innovations included the planting of new grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the creation of new wines, such as Le Stanze, Elegia and a Riserva from separate vineyards, such as the Vigna Asinone. With these showpieces, Carletti has won the hearts of wine lovers and has won numerous prizes at international competitions. Poliziano is now widely regarded as one of the great pioneers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
