Description
In 2014, they began working with the beautiful grapes of Oakville Ranch Vineyard, which is located high in the Vaca Mountains above Dalla Valle, just below the southern edge of Pritchard Hill. Cool air flows through these rows of vines daily, preserving the acidity and fresh flavors in the berries.
Keplinger Oakville Ranch Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine that embodies the essence of Napa Valley. but hardly available in Europe as over 98% is sold directly in America. It has a deep ruby color and the 2018 is opulent and concentrated with fine-grained tannins and crisp acidity. Minty, cedar, lifted floral aromas lead to lush cassis on the palate, the style is at once vibrant and elegant. Made from carefully selected grapes grown on the famous Oakville Ranch Vineyard, this Cabernet Sauvignon shows the perfect balance between power and elegance.
This wine drinks beautifully now and will age effortlessly for 20 years and more. It is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Cabernet Franc.
About Keplinger Wines
In 2004, Helen Keplinger moved to the Priorat region of Spain to start a winery for a group of partners who had purchased a vineyard there. For the next three years, she lived there full-time and then traveled back and forth between Napa Valley, becoming immersed in the culture, lifestyle, food and wines.
Her husband, DJ Warner, visited her often and they traveled all over the South of France, the Languedoc and the Rhône. They became even bigger fans of the regional wines, as well as the entire Mediterranean lifestyle - the vegetable gardens, local fresh foods, everything slathered in olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt - all of which are enhanced by the delicious, food-friendly wines. These wines and ideals are a huge part of life in Napa, so it was only natural to begin our wine project with California Grenache and Syrah, and vineyards that would allow them to reach their full potential.
Great wine is only possible from great vineyards – so they select vineyards, grow grapes and make wine according to this mantra.
Helen Keplinger is a renowned winemaker and has been making the fantastic wines of Grace Family Vineyards, Carte Blanche Wine and Kerr Cellars for over 10 years

Made up of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged 22 months in 100% French oak, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch Vineyard gives up warm cassis, blackberry pie and Morello cherries scents with hints of cedar chest, camphor and cardamom plus a touch of truffles. Full-bodied, firm and grainy, the palate gives up bags of freshness and lovely crunchy fruit with a savory finish. 180 cases were made.
Former winemaker for big Napa Cabernet names such as Bryant Family and Kenzo, Helen Keplinger clearly also has a passion for Rhône varieties. In fact, she spent three years making wines in one of Garnacha/Grenache’s spiritual homes—Priorat—and this experience shows in some of her most inspired, Grenache-based wines. Production for most of the labels is on a similar scale to some Burgundy grand crus—less than 100 dozen bottles, in some cases. Today, total production of the ten boutique cuvées is just 1,800 cases. What she lacks in volumes, she makes up for in expression, personality and singularity. For Rhône rangers, these are truly wines worth seeking out!

This is so good. Real. It’s full-bodied with very soft, polished tannins and so much character. Herbs, plums, currants and garrigue. Goes on for minutes. A little tight now, but so much in the center palate. Give it time to open. Shows the excellence of 2017, if you picked right. Better in 2024.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch is very pretty and expressive. Helen Keplinger found a way to maintain a good deal of freshness in her 2017, no small feat in this very challenging year. Today, the 2017 is very young, with quite a bit of primary fruit and not a whole lot of aromatic nuance. Time in bottle should take care of that. This polished, classy Cabernet is quite impressive and promising.

I was absolutely blown away by Helen Keplinger’s 2018s. The wines show a level of purity, finesse and delineation that I have not seen here previously. I also found the wines to have very clearly defined identities. In short, 2018 is a magical vintage for Helen Keplinger. Readers won’t want to miss these wines.
