Description
Kaesler's vineyards are located around the village of Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley and have been planted since 1893. After a long period of working in France and South Africa, successful winemaker Reid Bosward returned to the Barossa in 1999 to work there with a number of partners. Kaesler to take over. The biggest temptation for this acquisition was the opportunity to work with an unprecedented amount of very old vineyards. All vineyards are cultivated according to a 'sustainable viticulture' program. The old vines produce extremely powerful and concentrated wines characteristic of the region. It is striking that the style of the wines becomes more refined with age. This balance between power, concentration, freshness and elegance is perfectly reflected in Laesler's top model with the beautiful Shiraz called 'The Old Bastard'.
The Kaesler 'Old Bastard' Barossa Shiraz is perhaps one of Australia's most highly regarded wines. The name refers to a small number of 'old bastards' - gnarled old 'bush vines' planted in 1893, which form the heart of the 'Kaesler' brand. With a Langton's 'Outstanding' rating and consistently rated as a benchmark Barossa Shiraz, The Old Bastard is highly sought after by wine lovers and collectors worldwide. The vinification process is a closely guarded secret with a number of innovative techniques not previously used in Australia. But what can be said is that the fully manual harvest starts just before sunrise, when there is just enough light to get a beautiful rainbow effect from the dew drops on the leaves and grapes. Matured in 35% new French oak barrels and 65% in 1 year old French oak barrels.
The Old Bastard has an expressive nose with aromas of ripe red fruit (raspberries), black fruit, blackberries, blackcurrants. Furthermore, complex aromas of anise, nutmeg, chocolate and coffee, with a clear influence of partly new oak. The wine has a juicy structure with firm but silky tannins, a full body and an extremely long aftertaste.

The 2019 Old Bastard Shiraz is from a single vineyard in the Barossa, which was planted in 1893. In the mouth, the wine is inky, intense, concentrated, black, midnight—you get the gist of it here. The fruit swirls through eddies of savory tannin that dust the sweet flavor in a sheath of exotic spice and red earth. This is a very, very good wine, seriously good. Given the vintage conditions of 2018 and 2019, I did not expect to prefer the 2019, but here we are. I love this. It's a big wine—excellent, balanced. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and flexible wax.

A full-weighted style of wine that many gravitate toward: unbridled power, generous fruit and smoky Asian spice undertones, all melded to darker fruit allusions and quality oak. Much better oak than in the past. The finish is long and forceful, yet the tannins are surprisingly nuanced and in the context, relatively refined. Drink or hold.

From: The Barossa: An Ascent to Higher Quality (Dec 2021)
Inky purple. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, vanilla, exotic spices and incense, with a smoke and pipe tobacco notes in the background. Shows superb depth as well as energy to its palate-coating blueberry, cherry-vanilla, mocha and fruitcake flavors, which show outstanding definition and back-end lift. Finishes on a youthfully tannic note, with reverberating dark fruit and floral character and superb persistence.

Considering Reid Bosward’s position in the Barossa winemaking firmament, the prices for his consistently excellent Kaesler wines are astonishingly low. They’re built along classic Barossa lines, showcasing intense, highly perfumed and fruit-driven character, with weight and energy working in tandem. They also age wonderfully, but Bosward has a sure hand with tannin management, so the wines are seldom overstructured and can usually be enjoyed soon after release. The Old Bastard Shiraz, which is admittedly not in the value category, is one of the Barossa’s truly great wines and, to mind, reliably world-class in quality. In the context of many of Australia’s iconic wines, its price isn’t actually half bad. Incidentally, Bosward is also a co-owner of Yarra Yering, one of the Yarra’s Valley’s great, historic estates.
