The Armagh is Jim Barry's top premium wine. Jim Barry was the first to get serious about making wine in Clare Valley. The Armagh is a 100% Shiraz from a single vineyard planted in 1968 on a 400m elevation north west hill of sand and gravel.
The Armagh Shiraz was picked over a period of 7 days, starting on March 5 and ending on March 11. The 2018 vintage reflected an almost perfect growing season for the Armagh Vineyard. After a very dry and warmer than normal winter, the rain finally came just before the bud burst, with healthy autumns in August and September to kick off the growing season. Once flowering was complete, the rains returned, with 90mm in late November and early December, preparing the vines perfectly for the ripening season January and February were warm and dry, eliminating any disease pressure and promoting the production of loose clusters of small berries with an intense flavor was promoted, typical of the Armagh vineyard. Substantial ripeness and at the same time good acidity. Blackberries and eucalyptus. Fleshy. Jammy in the beginning, freshness in the finish. Soft tannins.
99/100 Suckling and 100/100 Decanter
Jim Barry was the first to get serious about making wine in Clare Valley. In 1947 Jim graduated as an oenologist from Roseworthy Agricultural College, becoming the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley. Jim Barry has an impressive resume at that time, which includes 22 years of work experience at the Clarevale co-op and founding Taylor Wines for the Taylor family. Eventually, he decides to start his own winery, which has since grown into a real family business.
The third generation is currently running the company. The winery Jim Barry Wines has 17 different vineyards in the Clare Valley and two vineyards in Coonawarra. The total area of the vineyards in Clare Valley is 320 hectares! Each vineyard has its own soil profile and microclimate. The main vineyards are, The Armagh, The Florita, The Lodge Hill, and The Old Penola Cricket Ground. So-called single vineyard wines are made from these plots. The main grape varieties are Shiraz, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition, Jim also experiments with the Greek variety assyrtiko. The Armagh Shiraz is the flagship of the winery.
