Description
The Lalama is a very elegant fresh wine with perfect acidity. It is a glass full of black fruit and spices with a nice, long finish. Has clear elements of a very nice burgundy but for a fraction of the price.
Dominio do Bibei is a recent project of the local Dominguez family with the 'Priorat' couple Sara Perez (Mas Martinet) and René Barbier Jr (Clos Mogador) as consultants. They bought old vineyards and also planted new ones. They make four wines in total: the limited top cuvées Lacima (Mencia) and Lapena (Godello) and then the white Lapola (60% Godello with Treixadura, Dona Blanca and Torrontes) and the red Lalama (85% Mencia with Garnacha Tintoreira, Brancellao and Mauraton). All grapes are picked by hand (not a merit but simply a necessity on these terroirs!), treated as gently as possible and selected grape by grape. The grapes then go into upright 500 liter barrels for the 'macération' with the occasional gentle manual 'pigeage'. The extraction is done as gently as possible to obtain extremely refined tannins. The Lalama then goes on 'foudres' and used French oak barrels of 300 liters for 21 months. At Domino do Bibei they still take the time to let the wine develop and it is only after 18 months in the bottle that the wine is put on the market.
All that information can hardly prepare us for the eventual shock of tasting the wine. Is this Spanish ? Definitely forget about Rioja, Ribera del Duero or Priorat. Definitely think of Burgundy. Perhaps the best kind of Chinon, however, nothing can quite approach that special mix of crunchy fruit, sizzling minerality, invigorating acidity and playful lightness (12.5% alcohol). This is unique, simply incomparable, highly original : this is Ribeira Sacra !

The 2018 reds are one step above in finesse, elegance and freshness compared with the 2017s, and the 2018 Lalama is even paler and brighter than the 2017. Despite having similar alcohol (14%), the sensation here is more-contained ripeness and better balance. It feels a bit like an updated version of the 2016. 63,315 bottles and 540 magnums produced. It was bottled in November 2020.
Dominio Do Bibei was reluctant to show me their new white wine from Ribeiro, but I bumped into a bottle of the 2015 and I loved it, so I decided to write a note about it. Other than that, they continue producing fantastic wines from Ribeira Sacra. I did some catch-up, because I was tasting older vintages than the wines currently in the market. They are focusing on vineyard work—converting everything to organic and recovering old vineyards. They have 30 hectares in the Bibei Valley, in the villages of Angullo, Soutipedre, Val de Rodrigo and Mendoia, from which they produce 200,000 to 220,000 bottles depending on the vintage.

You can safely visit the flat vineyards of Ch. Driving past Pétrus without ever feeling for a moment that it is a special terroir: the secret is hidden in the soil. While one breathtaking view of the steep slopes of the Moselle (especially the Terrassenmosel), the Douro valley, the Priorat or Côte Rôtie is enough to make our wine heart beat faster. What makes a person plant vines in such impossible places? It approaches the obsession of an alchemist who wants to extract liquid gold from the stones.
Grapes such as Mencia, Brancellao, Merenzao, Souson, Caino Tinto, Mouraton, Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante) and also white grapes such as Godello, Treixadura, Albarino, Loureira, Dona Blanca and Torrontés were planted on a sparse soil of slate and granite. At least two of these grapes have the inherent class to grow into absolute toppers: Mencia in red and Godello in white. But just about all insiders agree that the magical combination of the noble Mencia grape and the dramatic terroirs of the Ribeira Sacra creates fireworks.
