Description
Perrot-Minot is a winery in Burgundy, France, known for its exceptional wines from the Côte de Nuits. Perrot-Minot was founded in the first half of the 19th century and has been in the hands of the same family for five generations. In 1993, Christophe Perrot-Minot, the current winemaker, took over the management of the estate. Since then, Christophe has made significant improvements both in the vineyard and in the cellar, focusing on biodynamic methods and low yields to increase the quality of the wines.
The Perrot-Minot estate owns around 12 hectares of vineyards, located in the Côte de Nuits. They own plots in well-known villages such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne-Romanée. A key feature of their wine production is the use of very old vines, often over 50 years old, which contributes to the concentration and depth of their wines. The "Ultra" cuvees "La Richemone" and "Combe d'Orveau" are perfect examples of this.
Christophe Perrot-Minot is known for his pursuit of pure, elegant and well-structured wines. He uses minimal intervention during winemaking, ensuring that the wines best reflect the character of their terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand and the use of new oak is carefully dosed so as not to overpower the fruitiness of the wines.
The winter and early spring of 2018 were noticeably rainy, allowing the vines to build up significant water reserves. These reserves enabled the vines to endure the warm and sunny conditions of the second half of spring. The vintage is also marked by an exceptionally hot and dry summer. Thanks to the water reserves of the winter, the grapes reached ideal ripeness, withstood the heat and developed in exceptional health. The bunches were in perfect condition when the harvest began on September 3. This vintage is concentrated and complex, reaching excellent ripeness while maintaining freshness. The wines stand out for their finesse and remarkable freshness, with a structured palette that reveals a multitude of aromas - a true virtuoso. This elegant and refined vintage has the potential to age for many years, gradually revealing its full complexity.
Perrot Minot has 0.58 ha in this Premier Cru with vines planted in 1989 and 1993. After the replanting of a first part of the vines in 1989 and then a second in 1993, this plot, nestled on stony and marly soil, reveals all its splendor. The soil encourages the deep rooting of the vines, allowing the essence of the terroir to come to the fore. This quality of the soil makes it possible to produce elegant and pure wines, marked by delicate herbs. A living testimony to the climate of Morey-Saint-Denis.
The wine reveals a beautiful bouquet of red fruits with a subtle hint of cinnamon. On the palate, this slender wine reveals a chiseled structure and great freshness. Naturally refined and nuanced, the dense and silky texture reveals a delicate minerality, leading to a long and delicious finish. The persistence in the mouth is impressive.

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru has a crisp, classically styled, crushed rock and slightly chalky bouquet, the tightly coiled red and black fruit overshadowed by that stony facade. The palate conveys a lot of nascent energy, offering bright red berries laced with blood orange and brown spices, and leading to a precise and very persistent finish. Superb.

Christophe Perrot-Minot asks me what I think of his wines, as he customarily does every year since I began visiting over a decade ago. "Oh, they are probably the best that you have ever made," I answer and he knows that I genuinely mean it. Indeed, in 2018 I feel that Perrot-Minot has made the wines that he has long wanted to create and come close to, yet never in quite as accomplished fashion as these. "In 2018, a lot of parcels suffered hydric stress, especially at the end of rows," he told me, one of the few growers candid about the challenges of the growing season. "When I picked I decided to declassify parts of the vineyard that had suffered stress. For example, in Morey-Saint-Denis En La Rue de Vergy I de-selected all the vines close to the forest that did not reach phenolic ripeness. We picked from 5 until 16 September, around 50% to 60% de-stemmed in all the wines. The maximum alcohol this year is 13.5% in the Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze and the others are around 13%. Of course, there is no chaptalization."
