Description
Founded in 1982 by Naoko and Gustav Dalla Valle, the winery is located 800 feet above the Silverado Trail and offers excellent views of the landscape. In the early 1980s, Naoko's visionary idea of planting vines against the hillsides astonished the Napa Valley. Today, some of California's finest wines are produced here. In 1992, Dalla Valle's Cabernet Sauvignon received 100 Parker points. It was the second California wine to receive this perfect score.
The Dalla Valle 'Maya' Napa Valley comes from the vineyard block of the same name and has a high proportion of Cabernet Franc: 33%. The remaining 67% is Cabernet Sauvignon. The harvest took place between late September and early October and was done by hand. The grapes were carefully sorted, destemmed and slowly fermented, until they finally matured for more than two years in the best French wooden barrels.
The 'Maya is surrounded by an aura of perfection, although it is still very young. The cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc shows a fantastic complexity and an almost magical harmony of power and finesse. In the nose, the wine offers an enormously dense dark fruit of cassis and red cherries, blueberries, pomegranates and blood orange, milk chocolate, tobacco, menthol and mocha, as well as a spicy cloud of scents. All this is accompanied by a slightly reductive note of flint and the best wood.
In the mouth, fine, silky and polished tannins reveal themselves. In addition, a perfectly integrated, lively and mineral tartaric acid and a ripe and elegant fruit bouquet. These different aspects merge seamlessly and accumulate towards the endless finale. The wine continues to grow, only becoming more powerful and subtle. What a balance and what a great experience, already! How great will this wine be after decades of maturation?
This vintage has been awarded the iconic score of 100/100 points and the review ends with: " ......this Maya is simply jaw-dropping"

The very deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Maya is shy and restrained to begin. With swirling, it begins to reveal beguiling notes of fragrant earth, lavender, garrigue and Sichuan pepper, giving way to a core of wild blueberries, boysenberries, black raspberries and black currants plus a hint of iron ore. The palate is full-bodied, revealing itself in slow-releasing layers of black and blue fruits with exhilarating earth and mineral sparks, framed by firm, beautifully ripe tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a persistent ferrous note. As cerebral as it is downright hedonic, this Maya is simply jaw-dropping.
Followers of Dalla Valle will want to check out my notes on the brand-new joint venture with Ornellaia Estate in Tuscany: DVO.
The other somewhat unusual new release this year is the 2018 MDV. “In 1999 we did a cuvée for auction Napa Valley, made entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon from our Maya vineyard,” Maya said. “The first vintage produced for our clients was 2013, then 2016. We almost never do anything 100%, but I decided to pull out a little 2018 and bottle it separately again this year.”
“Collina is an earlier-drinking taste of Dalla Valle—a little more affordable,” Maya commented. “We purchase a small amount of fruit from Oakville Ranch to blend with our own fruit for this label.”
Altogether, this was an incredibly strong lineup of 2018s from Dalla Valle, with the Maya label/vineyard's expression of this great vintage absolutely stealing my heart. WOW!

Tasting Note
Solidly built, with ganache, plum, fig paste, smoldering tobacco and loam notes rolled together, ending with a muscular feel on the dark finish. Reveals a strong tug of terroir. Will need some time to stretch out fully. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2022 through 2035. 800 cases made. — JM

Naoko Dalla Valle comes from a Japanese dynasty of sake producers, but became more interested in the local wines in California. Since her husband's untimely death in 1995, she has led Dalla Valle alone. She has since taken it to the top of the Napa Valley. She is supported by winemaker Andy Erickson, consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and also her daughter Maya, who for a long time wanted nothing to do with the winery. After Maya had studied in Washington, she decided to pay a visit to Michel Rolland in Bordeaux. Ornellaia, Pétrus and Château Latour followed. "Now she's overqualified," her mother says with a wink. Maya is interested in the biodynamics she learned during her travels. In Dalla Valle, biodynamic work has been going on for a long time. In addition to barrels from the best cooperages, the cellar also contains clay amphorae, such as those at Pontet-Canet in Bordeaux, where biodynamic work has also been carried out for a long time.
