Description
AVAILABLE ON DECEMBER 6, 2024 FOR THE FIRST TIME
Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat (ABC) often dreamed of owning a small winery where commerce was not the driving force. Instead, the dream was to have the luxury of keeping wines in barrel for long periods of time when needed (5 years for the Nebbiolo!); to explore unusual varieties and idiosyncratic styles because they are interesting. The Clendenen Family brand, founded in 2000, is a passion project. There is no doubt that quality is here, along with the ABC signature of balance, finesse and longevity.
The wines of the Clendenen Family Vineyards are unique and always only available in very small quantities and as the exclusive importer of Au Bon Climat we are allowed to carry the beautiful wines of the Clendenen Family Vineyards. In Europe these wines are hardly found and 99% of these wines remain in the USA and are distributed via the Au Bon Climat Wine Club. In some cases only 50 cases are made so these are true collector's items.
The wines always receive unanimously high scores. This is what Antonio Galloni (VINOUS) says about the Clendenen wines: "This is a fabulous set of wines from Au Bon Climat. These new releases provide fascinating insight into his stylistic choices across several vineyards and sites. I have said this before, but I think it bears repeating. It's fascinating to taste the Au Bon Climat wines given how much Clendenen influenced many of today's leading young winemakers.
Tasting notes
The Clendenen Family Vineyards Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyardy is a beautiful, impressive wine. It is rich, full and creamy, with all the qualities that are so typical of this winery and vineyard. The grapes, sourced from old vines on Bien Nacido's K Block, are harvested early to maintain their freshness. The palate shows vibrant notes of candied lemon, marzipan, herbs, chamomile and baked apple pie, which contribute to the full, oily structure and the pronounced depth of this Chardonnay.
Winemaker's Notes
For decades they have been producing Chardonnay from Bien Nacido and have refined the production process to the point where they know exactly what to do to get the most out of this grape. They have identified the best locations where Chardonnay is grown. This is a big, creamy but balanced Chardonnay, with a powerful but defined structure. The nose immediately reveals that this is an old world style Chardonnay.
The grapes are hand-harvested, pressed whole (to minimize tannin extraction from the skins) and fermented entirely in barrel. The style for Clendenen Family wines is slightly different compared to the Au Bon Climat version. We select the best fruit and use new 350-liter François Frères French oak barrels, in which the wine is matured for 20 months and bottled unfiltered. During a trip to Burgundy in 2013, Jim Clendenen discovered these special 350-liter barrels and decided that these specially made barrels were essential for our best wines. The subtle yet powerful oak character of these barrels works perfectly with the extended lees maturation, and the larger size preserves the energy of the wine, while the longer wood period provides beautiful texture.
Nutritional suggestions
This lively Chardonnay pairs well with a wide range of dishes. Some favorites include butter-seared scallops with a hint of orange zest or roasted chicken with rosemary.

The 2016 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard opens with touches of toast, gunflint and chamomile over a core of perfumed white peaches. The palate is medium to full-bodied and super silky, flooding the mouth with savory, honey-nut flavor layers that are refreshed by lively acidity, and it finishes very long. Only 50 cases were made.

From: Santa Barbara: A Rare Bright Spot for California in 2020 (Aug 2022)
The 2018 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard is rich, ample and creamy, with all of the pedigree that is such a signature here. This fruit, from old vines in the K Block, is picked early to retain energy. Aging takes place in 100% 350-liter Francois Freres barrels for two years, the slightly larger size chosen to capture energy, while the longer period in wood builds texture. Its an approach that Jim Clendene honed to perfection, as witnessed in this gorgeous, striking Chardonnay. Lemon confit, marzipan, spice, chamomile and baked apple tart are all vivid in a Chardonnay that impresses with its oiliness, depth and sheer character.

This is a fabulous set of wines from Au Bon Climat. I admit, it’s hard today to taste wines Jim Clendenen made prior his passing last year. At the same time, these new releases provide fascinating insight into his stylistic choices across several vineyards and sites.
I have said this before, but I think it bears repeating. It's fascinating to taste the Au Bon Climat wines given how much Clendenen influenced many of today's leading young winemakers. Pretty much without exception, Clendenen's wines, especially the Chardonnays, are richer and more powerful, with greater oak influence and overall lushness. In general, the wines here are marked by a focus on a handful of top sites, many of which Clendenen made famous, a high percentage of new oak, but often with larger 350-liter barrels, long aging in wood, and a high amount of whole clusters in the Pinots. More than anything else, these wines are American treasures, legacies of one of this country's most inspired and inspiring winemakers.

Clendenen Family Vineyards
Clendenen Family Vineyards is a special project by Jim Clendenen, the iconic winemaker behind Au Bon Climat. While Au Bon Climat focuses on classic Burgundy-style wines, Clendenen Family Vineyards gave him the freedom to explore more experimental grape varieties and techniques, all while staying true to his philosophy of quality and terroir expression.
Jim Clendenen created this label as a platform for smaller, distinctive productions, allowing him to dive even deeper into his passion for winemaking. These wines are produced in limited quantities and reflect his personal vision.
Location and climate of Santa Barbara County
The unique geography of Santa Barbara County makes it one of the most fascinating wine regions in California. The valleys are oriented east to west, which allows cool ocean breezes to flow directly inland. This slows down the ripening process of the grapes, ensuring a perfect balance of freshness, aroma, and structure.
The vineyards used for Clendenen Family Vineyards, including plots from Bien Nacido and Rancho La Cuna, are highly regarded and consistently deliver grapes of outstanding quality.
The different wines of Clendenen Family Vineyards
What makes Clendenen Family Vineyards stand out is its diversity. Alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, less common varieties such as Nebbiolo, Barbera, Syrah, and Petit Verdot also play an important role. Traditional methods like whole-cluster fermentation, native yeast fermentation, and aging in high-quality French oak give these wines both depth and remarkable elegance.
Each bottle carries the story of the grape, the terroir, and the hand of a master winemaker.
Why choose Clendenen Family Vineyards wines
These wines are loved by wine enthusiasts who appreciate character, authenticity, and artisanal winemaking. They combine California’s generous fruit expression with European finesse — a rare balance. Many of the wines also have excellent aging potential, rewarding patience with even greater complexity. Jim Clendenen’s legacy, his commitment to quality, and his uncompromising vision make Clendenen Family Vineyards truly unique.
