Description
Bought by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, Château Trotanoy was considered one of the premier crus of Pomerol from the eighteenth century. Trotanoy is considered one of the best chateaus in Pomerol. The owner is Christian Moueix, who also owns renowned chateaus such as Hosanna, Latour à Pomerol and Bélair Monange. In the small appellation of Pomerol, Château Pétrus is perhaps the most famous, but many connoisseurs now know that Trotanoy is just as impressive. An opinion shared by the American Robert Parker, who rates Trotanoy's recent vintages extremely highly.
Since 2009, a selection of gravel-based plots in the northeastern part of the estate have been dedicated to Espérance de Trotanoy, a wine that is fruity and approachable after just a few years of cellaring, but which retains the depth, complexity and incredible concentration of flavor that are its hallmarks. for the unique terroir of Trotanoy.
The Trotanoy vineyard, located in one of the most exposed parts of the plateau and slopes gently towards the west. The soil is a very dense mixture of clay and gravel that tends to solidify when it dries out after rain to an almost concrete-like hardness, hence the name "Trot-anoy", - "too tiring" to cultivate.
The soil at the highest point of exposure contains a high proportion of gravel and gradually becomes more dominated by clay as elevation decreases. Underneath this clay is a subsoil of red gravel and an impermeable layer of hard, iron-rich soil known as "crasse de fer". This fascinating soil diversity gives the wines strength, depth and complexity.
The 2017 is one of the finest vintages with between 97-99 points from well-known wine critics. The 2017 Trotanoy, like its brother or sister the Chateau Petrus and the La-Fleur Petrus, is a 100% Merlot. The 2017 Trotanoy is one of the standouts within the JP Moueix range. The bouquet is typical Trotanoy with a beautiful minerality, very elegant with subtle scents of pencil shavings and flint interwoven in the black and red fruit. The palate is medium-weight with fine tannins, great acidity, muscular fruit and a solid line of firm, grainy tannins, ending with length and fantastic tension. A very impressive wine that will last an exceptionally long time!.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Trotanoy is 100% Merlot and begins quite stubborn and broody on the nose at this youthful stage, needing a lot of coaxing to reveal a core of plum preserves, blackberry pie and licorice with suggestions of cast-iron pan, underbrush, tilled soil and charcoal. Medium-bodied, the palate is not at all weighty, but it is built like a brick house, with bags of restrained, muscular fruit and a solid line of firm, grainy tannins, finishing with epic length and fantastic tension. A very impressive wine that should by incredibly long-lived!
According to Christian Moueix, most of their frost damage happened to Lalande de Pomerol. At Chateau Belair, there is absolutely no production this year. Production for the lower parts of Pomerol was down by around 33%.

The 2017 Trotanoy is a dark, brooding wine, as it so often is. The tannins are forbidding at this stage, but then again, that is Trotanoy. Smoke, incense, game and a whole range of mineral inflections run through the 2017. Energetic and impeccable in its balance, Trotanoy is compelling in 2017, but readers need to cellar it for a few years at least, after which it will drink well for a number of decades.

The 2017 Trotanoy fulfills the promise it showed from barrel with an enticing, captivating mineral-driven bouquet, crushed rocks permeating the black fruit. Subtle aromas of black truffle and smoke emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, perfectly pitched acidity, fresh and vibrant. A very harmonious and sapid finish gets the saliva flowing. Quintessentially Trotanoy, expect up to 30 years drinking pleasure from one of Pomerol’s most consistent performers.

The 2017 Trotanoy is a dark, brooding wine with massive tannins and tons of structure. Graphite, scorched earth, smoke, game and incense add to the wine's decidedly virile, potent personality. There is real density and power in the glass. Then again, that is Trotanoy. Even so, in 2017 some of the wine's typically inward, brooding personality is tempered.
