Description
Vietti is absolutely a top domain. The robust Barolos and Barberas from Mario Cordero are world class and very scarce! The quality is phenomenal and consistent across the entire range. Vietti is the only producer who owns vineyards in the eleven villages that are allowed to produce Barolo. They were the first to replant the forgotten local white grape “Arneis”. They were also pioneers in bottling “single vineyard” Baroli. This was the legendary 1961 Barolo Rocche. By being one of the first wine estates to export to the US, Vietti quickly became a big name in the Piemonte region and now all single vineyard Barolos are issued on allocation and only a handful of bottles are ever available per country. The potential of their wines is unprecedented and from the good years this is 30 years+
The Vietti 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a relatively new addition to Vietti’s impressive Barolo portfolio, with the first vintage released in 2018. Sourced from the prestigious Monvigliero vineyard in Verduno, a cru known as the ‘Grand Cru’ of Barolo, this wine is distinguished by its subtle and refined character. Where other Barolos often display power and structure, Monvigliero offers a softer, more ethereal, and more Burgundian expression of Nebbiolo.
The nose is characterised by a delicate, almost fragile florality, with notes of dried iris, lavender and rose petals. This floral elegance is complemented by subtle spices, powdery herbs and a light touch of tar and wet road, reflecting the depth and mineral character of the terroir. What makes this 2020 Monvigliero so special is the vinification with 60% whole bunches, a technique that contributes to a lively freshness, aromatic intensity and a subtle spicy note. On the palate, one experiences a play between juicy acidity and gossamer tannins, resulting in a wine that feels lighter and airier than other Barolos, yet has a wonderful depth.
The palate begins with a refreshingly sharp note of cranberry jelly and pomegranate, which flows into sweet grenadine and soft, ripe red berries. This playful combination of freshness and sweetness gives the wine a juicy and drinkable character, without sacrificing complexity or elegance.
Located in the northernmost part of the Barolo region, Monvigliero is a vineyard known for its soft chalky soils and unique microclimate. The wines from this cru are distinguished by their light and almost silky structure, in contrast to the more powerful and tannic wines from Serralunga d'Alba or Castiglione Falletto. This makes the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero a very refined and expressive wine, with an almost Burgundian style that is becoming increasingly popular among Barolo lovers. With its elegant tannins and lively acidity, this Barolo will continue to develop over the next 15 to 20 years. As the wine ages, tertiary aromas of dried herbs, leather and truffle will develop, while maintaining freshness.
This refined style calls for subtle, gourmet dishes, such as: Vitello Tonnato, a classic Piedmontese specialty. Wild mushroom risotto, which enhances the earthy notes of the wine. Duck breast with cherry compote, which perfectly complements the fruity notes. Mature cheeses such as Taleggio or a young Robiola, which complement the delicate structure of the wine.
With only 6,754 bottles produced, the Vietti 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is an exclusive wine that will delight collectors and connoisseurs alike.

A relatively new departure for Vietti, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is soft and delicate with pretty floral aromas, dried iris, powdered spice and a hint of tar or road pavement. The inaugural vintage was 2018. Made with 60% whole-cluster fruit during fermentation, the wine has a moment of tartness, punchy highlights, sweet grenadine and cranberry jelly. It ages in large oak casks for 24 months. Production is 6,754 bottles.
Vietti has access to Nebbiolo from 10 MGA sites to make the various wines in its ample portfolio. We also have a new wine to celebrate—the 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà—that knocks it out of the ballpark with its inaugural release.

One of the palest and most perfumed Barolos from Vietti with a transparent, ruby-orange hue. This is a super nuanced, elegant, expressive and ethereal Monvigliero that grows on me, with enchanting notes of grilled grapefruit, thyme, frozen raspberries and mineral. A subtle splash of white pepper and mezcal-like smokiness. Really refined and transparent, with some citrus and mineral tensions that are closely knit with the fine, crumbled tannins. So much finesse and detail here, and its complexity will continue to unwind. Really composed, soulful and mind-blowing! A big wow that deserves attention. Vegan. Best with a Burgundy glass. Can drink now or from 2027.

The 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a very pretty, ethereal wine. Crushed flowers, mint, bright, red-toned fruit, dried herbs and spice are nicely lifted. This pretty, nuanced Barolo is very classy, but also on the lighter side. The 2020 is beguiling, but also a bit ethereal—this fruit may have been picked too early.

Vietti is definitely a top domain. Mario Cordero's robust Barolos and Barberas are world class and very scarce! In addition, he brings an extremely good Nebbiolo to the market with the Nebbiolo Langhe Perbacco. This is sufficiently available and very affordable. This also applies to the crisp, fresh, soft-sweet Moscato d'Asti. And then of course there is the story behind the labels... Since 1974, a select number of Vietti wines (since 1988 only the Barolo Riserva Villero) are labeled with a specially designed, original work of art. The print run of the artwork is equal to the number of bottles of the wine in question that are made in this vintage. The first hundred labels are also signed by the artist himself, so real collector's items!
The history of the Vietti family as a wine company goes back to the 19th century. In the early years, grapes were grown, but they were sold to the Coöperatie and other winegrowers. Only at the beginning of the 20th century did the family decide to start making their own wine. In recent years, no one in Piedmont has set the bar higher than Vietti. All their wines are of exceptionally high quality. Winemaker Luca Currado built on the success of his parents Alfredo and Lucia. The quality is phenomenal and consistent across the entire range. Vietti is the only producer who owns vineyards in the eleven villages allowed to produce Barolo. They were the first to replant the forgotten local white grape “Arneis”. In addition, they were pioneers in bottling "single vineyard" Baroli. This was the legendary 1961 Barolo Rocche one of the better wine companies in Piemonte. By being one of the first wine estates to export to the US, Vietti quickly became a big name in the Piemonte region. The Vietti wines come from grapes from the Castiglione Falletto vineyards, the heart of the Barolo zone. The qualities of sandy calcareous soil in this area give a unique complexity and beautiful tannins to the elegant wines. The average age of the vines is between 30 and 70 years.
