Winery
Veeder House is a small winery that primarily produces wines for the gastronomy in California, including their top cuvée Mount Veeder. These wines rarely reach Europe. We were able to include a fine batch of the 2016 with our shipments from California. Veeder House is a small-scale project from Napa Valley, entirely focused on Cabernet Sauvignon from Mount Veeder. The focus is on terroir and precision, with minimal intervention in the cellar. Working with small plots at high altitude results in wines with structure, tension, and clear origin. The style is classic Napa, but with more freshness and finesse than you often see. You can find more information in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
Mount Veeder is located on the western side of Napa Valley and is known for its steep slopes and poor soils. The vineyards are often situated at high altitudes, resulting in lower temperatures and longer ripening. The soils consist of rocky material, ensuring low yields and concentrated grapes. This results in wines with structure, depth, and distinct minerality.
Grapes and vineyard management
Mount Veeder is one of the best vineyards in Napa Valley. Several big names produce wine from this vineyard, with prices ranging from 100 to as much as 1,000 euros. This wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to the altitude and poor soils, yields remain low. This results in small berries with high concentration. The vineyards are managed with great care, focusing on balance and ripeness. The grapes ripen slowly, which contributes to complexity and freshness.
Vinification and aging
After the harvest, the grapes are carefully selected and fermented to achieve maximum extraction of color and structure. Subsequently, the wine ages in French oak, which provides extra depth and structure. This aging is combined with sur lie aging to refine the texture and give the wine more complexity.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, deep dark red. On the nose, notes of blackcurrant, cassis, and ripe plums, complemented by cedarwood, tobacco, and a light spiciness. On the palate, powerful and structured, with firm yet ripe tannins. The wine has a full body but remains balanced by fresh acidity. The finish is long and complex.
Style and character
This Cabernet Sauvignon is powerful and structured, yet retains elegance thanks to its origins on Mount Veeder. The wine has distinct tannins and a firm backbone, making it suitable for longer aging. At the same time, it is already highly accessible with sufficient air.
Volume
The 2016 vintage is regarded as one of the strongest years in Napa Valley. The growing season was stable with ideal ripening conditions. This resulted in wines with concentration, balance, and ripe tannins, which is clearly evident in this Cabernet Sauvignon.
Food and wine pairings
Pairs excellently with red meat, such as grilled ribeye or sirloin. Also pairs well with lamb dishes, stews, and hard cheeses. The structure and tannins make it suitable for rich and powerful dishes.
