Description
This Trimbach is named after Frédéric Emile, who became famous for offering a new guarantee of quality and authenticity for Trimbach in 1898. The average age of the vines, 45 years, results in limited yields.
The south- and southeast-facing terroirs of Ribeauvillé and the Grand Crus of Geisberg and Osterberg, which overlook the winery, have produced this wine for several generations. In the 1970s, Trimbach decided not to mention the Grand Cru on the label.
Today, Cuvée Frederic Emile is considered a benchmark for Grand Crus Riesling and is Trimbach's signature wine.
The average age of the vines, 45 years, results in limited yields. The terroir's marl-limestone-sandstone and fossil-flecked muschelkalk composition, as well as the beautifully ripe grapes selected and harvested in late October, give this wine a remarkable personality: a dry and powerful Riesling, underscored by a mineral note and firm, ripe acidity. This prestigious house wine, the "Cuvée Frédéric Emile," is highly prized by connoisseurs and collectors, especially as it can age well for at least thirty years or more.

The 2015 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is clear and intense but highly refined on the nose that perfectly blends mineral with concentrated lemon and smoky flavors. Round, concentrated and very elegant on the palate, this is a slightly sweeter than normal Riesling, but it is highly finessed, well-structured and perfectly salty with a long and tension-filled finish. Fine tannins reflect the limestone/marl terroir of the Geisberg Grand Cru with the southeast-facing Osterberg Grand Cru. The 2015 will not go on the market earlier than 2022.
Ribeauvillé (with Hunawihr), and their rather cool terroirs on deep calcareous and sandstone marl soils, are among the winners of the warm and—during the vegetation period—dangerously dry 2015 vintage. Trimbach is just another example, and consumers will certainly fall in love with the 2015 icon Rieslings of this almost-400-year-old family enterprise after they have been released in a couple of years. Sure, there have been dryer Clos Sainte Hune vintages than the 2015, which ended up with 14% alcohol and 14 grams of unfermented sugar, but was there any better? I wouldn't claim the 2015 is the greatest ever, but I'd give it a wild card in any CSH vertical tasting for the next 30+ years. With the (dry) Cuvée Frédéric Emile and the (medium-dry) Grand Cru Geisberg there are two more world-class Rieslings from Ribeauvillé. And, being at probably the most famous Riesling estate in all Alsace, the 2015 Grand Cru Schlossberg (the second future release after the premiere of 2014) and the Cuvée M (from the Grand Cru Mandelberg) are of great quality! Since we are talking about Riesling, the Réserve and the Sélection de Vieilles Vignes (not produced in 2010 and 2013) are excellent dry Rieslings to be paired with many kinds of dishes.
During the summer months in 2015, nobody at Trimbach thought the wines, especially the Rieslings (of which Trimbach produces 350,000 bottles per year), would turn out that well two years later. But nature was propitious and ended the dreadful summer drought with a good rainfall in August, which, as Jean and Pierre Trimbach put it during the tasting, "saved the vintage." I'd rather say the rainfall caused a miracle and pushed the vintage into unforeseeable heights. Although the summer was extreme on many days, the 2015 wines kept their freshness, mineral expression and linear Trimbach style. "Thank God the crop was low since the beginning, otherwise nothing would have become ripe," says Pierre Trimbach. But the grapes became not just ripe but also intense and concentrated, giving the wines, especially the Rieslings, exceptional qualities and extraordinary aging potential.

Poured from a magnum, this age-worthy wine is snappy and precise in texture, offering abundant minerals, orange zest and white peach in the aroma and crisp, stony flavors on the palate. Focused, invigorating and still young, it will drink best from 2028.

From: Alsace & Luxembourg: 2017s and Late-Released 2016s (Jan 2019)
Bright straw. Clean, vibrantly mineral and racy aromas and flavors of green apple, pear and lime. Ripe yet brightly acidic, this exhibits a penetrating quality on the long, juicy, ginger- and mineral-accented finish. Very compact, dense and still youthful Riesling. Outstanding.

The venerable Trimbach firm, located in Ribeauvillé, owns 60 hectares and is now among the five biggest private vineyard land owners in Alsace. Long staunch opponents of the Grand Cru system (which, when it was first unveiled, they felt, not unreasonably, to be flawed), the family is now bottling numerous wines from different grand crus, such as the Mandelberg and the Geisberg, and will likely release their first-ever Riesling Brand in 2018 (they bought vineyards there in 2016). They have also bought 0.1 hectares of roughly 50-year-old Sylvaner vines in the Trottacker lieu-dit and are very happy with the fruit it supplies. Incidentally, the new releases of the estate’s two most famous wines, the Riesling Cuvée Fréderic Emile and the Clos Saint Hune, are absolutely superb.
