The 2023 Dominus Estate Napa Valley once again ranks among the absolute world elite of Napa Valley. This iconic wine from Christian Moueix, owner of the legendary Château Petrus in Pomerol, unites the power of California with the finesse and precision of Bordeaux. The 2023 vintage reveals a Dominus with exceptional balance, refinement, and impressive aging potential.
Dominus Estate
Dominus Estate is located at the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, one of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in Napa Valley. The history of this vineyard dates back to the 1830s, when pioneer George C. Yount planted the first vines here. Since 1983, the estate has been owned by Christian Moueix, who is known worldwide as the owner of Château Petrus and various other top estates on the Right Bank of Bordeaux.
His philosophy is clearly recognizable: terroir is central. Through sustainable and organic viticulture, low yields, and extremely precise selection, wines are created that combine power with elegance, freshness, and exceptional complexity. For decades, Dominus has been one of California's most sought-after and highly regarded Cabernet blends.

The 2023 volume
After an exceptionally wet winter, the growing season began more than two weeks later than normal. The abundant rain fully replenished water reserves, while a moderate summer without extreme heat ensured a long and even ripening process. Thanks to the long hang time, the grapes were able to ripen optimally while retaining freshness and aromatic precision. The harvest took place between October 7 and 18.
It is striking that Dominus decided not to release a wine in 2022 because the quality did not meet the estate's high standards. This underscores the house's uncompromising quality philosophy. The 2023 therefore marks a convincing return with a wine that ranks among the absolute highlights of the vintage.
Blending and vinification
The 2023 Dominus consists of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. After an extremely rigorous selection, the grapes are vinified separately. Fermentation is controlled, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging for approximately eighteen months in French oak barrels, of which about 40% are new. The final blend is only made after months of aging.
Scent, taste and character
The bouquet is deep and refined, with aromas of blackcurrants, black cherries, violets, pencil shavings, damp forest, cedarwood, and subtle notes of sandalwood and earth. The oak influence is perfectly integrated and supports the wine without overpowering the fruit expression.
On the palate, Dominus displays an impressive combination of power and elegance. Ripe cassis, dark forest fruit, and floral nuances are supported by a creamy texture, lively freshness, and velvety tannins. The wine possesses an almost effortless balance, where concentration and finesse are in complete harmony.
The finish is exceptionally long and layered, with ever-new nuances of dark fruit, graphite, spices, and mineral notes emerging. This is a wine that will continue to develop over decades.
Professional reviews
The international wine press once again ranks the 2023 Dominus among the absolute world elite. James Suckling awards the wine 99 points and praises the perfect balance, the velvety tannins, and the enormous aging potential. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awards 98 points and laudes the exceptional complexity, creamy texture, and endless finish. Antonio Galloni, on the other hand, emphasizes the striking accessibility of this vintage, without losing the classic elegance of Dominus.
Drinking window and food and wine pairings
Although the 2023 Dominus is remarkably accessible for a young Dominus, the wine will continue to develop over the coming decades. The optimal drinking window runs from approximately 2028 to 2050.
Preferably serve the wine at 16 to 18°C and decant it young one to two hours in advance.
A superb accompaniment to grilled beef, dry-aged ribeye, sirloin, rack of lamb, venison, truffle dishes, duck breast, and aged hard cheeses.

The only one of the Dominus wines to show more than a hint of wood, the 2023 Dominus matured in 40% new French oak, leaving it marked by caramel and cedar overtones. Yet that oak aging is balanced by plenty of black cherry fruit and loamy earth notes, blending easily into a harmonious whole. Medium- to full-bodied, this rich, almost creamy blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot finishes with velvety tannins borne on a finish that unfolds to reveal incredible persistence and complexity.
Director of Viticulture and Winemaking Tod Mostero is feeling better than the last time I saw him, when he had made the decision not to release any 2022s from the property's dry-farmed vineyard. Looking at the 2023s, Mostero pointed out that the weather strongly influenced the outcome, starting with plentiful winter rains—16 inches in January, versus a historical average of five inches. February was normal, but then March again saw a big difference—12 inches versus an average of five inches. Budbreak was correspondingly delayed, not taking place until April 12. "Development was consistently two weeks late over the course of the season," he said, while also noting that summer into fall was moderate (no temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit were recorded during August) and dry, allowing ample hang time and full ripening. Harvest took place from October 7 through October 18.
Winemaking includes the use of an optical sorter, with fermentations starting at 15 degrees Celsius and ramping up to 30 degrees Celsius before cooling down as the yeast activity decreases. The wines are racked to tank, where they undergo malolactic fermentation prior to being run to barrel. Lots are kept separate for approximately nine months, with preliminary blending taking place the summer following harvest.
The three wines reviewed here roughly represent three different sectors of the vineyard. Othello (2,000 cases) is drawn from the front portion of the property—between the winery and Highway 29—where the soils have the highest proportion of silt and clay. Napanook (3,500 cases) derives from the blocks just behind the winery, while Dominus (7,000 cases) comes from the stoniest blocks furthest from Highway 29, pushed up against the Mayacamas. All three wines were scheduled to be released in spring 2026.

Black currant, pencil shaving, subtle sandalwood, wet earth, forest floor and violet aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate with ultra-fine tannins that integrate perfectly at the end. A polished and caressing texture that goes on for minutes. The balance and drinkability of this Dominus is terrific, and it will age beautifully. A blend of 87% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Very drinkable now, but will age beautifully.

From: Napa Valley Soars: The 2023 & 2024 Cabernet Sauvignons (Nov 2025)
The 2023 Dominus is a very pretty, surprisingly open-knit wine from this estate. Soft contours wrap around a core of pliant red/purplish fruit. Lavender, rose petal and gently spiced overtones caress the mid-palate and finish. I expect the 2023 will drink well with minimal cellaring, something that is rarely the case here.

Dominus Estate, owned by famed winemaker and CEO Christian Moueix (also owner of Pétrus, Trotanoy, La Fleur-Petrus, Hosanna, among others), is part of the Napanook Historical Landmark and widely regarded as one of the oldest vineyards (1836) of Napa Valley, California. The estate was bought in 1946 by the legendary winemaker and visionary John Daniels, and passed to his daughters in 1970.
In 1982, they entered into a partnership with Christian Moueix, which resulted in Dominus Estate. Moueix bought all the shares in 1995 and is therefore now the sole owner. The first Dominus wine appeared in 1983 and immediately gained international attention thanks to the influence of Moueix.
Dominus Estate produces a second wine, Napanook, first marketed in 1996, and a third called “Othello”, an entry-level wine. The domain covers 44 hectares, divided into 14 plots with mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (87%). However, it also says some petit verdot and cabernet franc. The merlot grape has not been used for the “Grand Vin” since 2002, but is still occasionally used in the Napanook wines. The winery, which was built in 1996, is made of stones held together with metal wire and represents the terroir of the vineyard. The architectural style is completely in harmony with the landscape and protects against the heat during the day and the cold at night.
The vineyard's origins at the Napa Valley cult winery Dominus Estate date back to 1836, when it was known as the Napanook Vineyard. This makes it one of the oldest vineyards in California, and therefore also in the United States. Napanook later became part of the Inglenook winery, which in turn became the property of California wine pioneer John Daniel in 1946. After his death, his daughters Robin Lail and Marcia Smith inherited the 44-hectare Napanook vineyard in 1982 and asked oenologist Christian Moueix to partner with them. At the time, Christian Moueix was director and winemaker responsible for top Bordeaux wine estates such as Petrus, Château Trotanoy and Château La Fleur-Pétrus. With the first vintage 1983 of this new Californian
winery Christian Moueix chose the name Dominus Estate. The fact that Christian Moueix has pledged his heart to Dominus Estate, of which he has been the sole owner since 1995, is apparent from his total dedication and commitment to achieve the ultimate result. Dominus is a wine with a clear Bordeaux aristocracy with the use of grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
