2023 Dominus Estate Napanook is the second wine of the legendary Dominus Estate, yet it hardly deserves that designation. Hailing from the same historic Napanook Vineyard and made by the same team led by Christian Moueix, Napanook offers an impressive combination of accessibility, finesse, and the distinctive terroir of Dominus. The 2023 vintage ranks among the best ever produced and approaches the quality of a Grand Vin remarkably closely.
Dominus Estate
Dominus Estate is located on the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, one of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in Napa Valley. The history of this special place dates back to the 1830s. Since 1983, the estate has been managed by Christian Moueix, owner of Château Petrus in Pomerol, among others. His vision was clear: to produce a wine in which the Napa Valley terroir takes center stage, but with the precision, elegance, and restraint so characteristic of great Bordeaux wines.
The vineyards are organically farmed and dry-cultivated, allowing the roots to grow deep into the stony soil. Low yields, strict selection, and minimal intervention in the cellar result in wines known for their refinement, balance, and exceptional aging potential.

Napanook Vineyard
Napanook originates from the central part of the famous Napanook Vineyard, directly behind the winery. These plots form the bridge between the richer clay and silt soils of Othello and the stony, highly concentrated plots where the iconic Dominus comes from. As a result, Napanook possesses both the accessibility and the refinement that characterize the estate.
The 2023 volume
After an exceptionally wet winter, the growing season began more than two weeks later than usual. The abundant rain ensured excellent water reserves, while a cool, consistent summer without extreme heat allowed the grapes to ripen slowly. The long hang time resulted in perfect aromatic ripeness, beautiful freshness, and silky tannins. The harvest took place between October 7 and 18.
It is striking that Dominus chose not to release any wine from the 2022 vintage at all, because it did not meet the estate's quality standards. The 2023 demonstrates the uncompromising way in which work is carried out at Dominus.
Blending and vinification
The 2023 Napanook consists of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. After an extremely careful selection, the grapes are fermented separately. Following malolactic fermentation, the different batches age separately in French oak barrels, after which the final blend is created. The result is a wine that clearly bears the Dominus signature, yet offers great drinking pleasure even when relatively young.
Scent, taste and character
The nose opens with aromas of black cherries, blueberries, and blackberries, followed by notes of graphite, wet earth, lavender, orange peel, dark chocolate, cedarwood, and subtle spices. The wine possesses striking aromatic precision and elegance.
On the palate, Napanook is rich and seductive, with a silky texture and beautifully integrated tannins. Dark fruit, black tea, black olives, and refined spices are supported by fresh acidity and a lovely mineral undertone. The wine has great depth, yet remains remarkably accessible and refined.
The long finish reveals nuances of cassis, graphite, cedarwood, and fine spices for minutes. Although very attractive even when young, this wine possesses sufficient structure to develop further over the next fifteen years.
Professional reviews
The international wine press is particularly enthusiastic about this vintage. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate calls the 2023 possibly even better than the excellently received 2021 and praises the harmony, texture, and long finish. James Suckling awards the wine 97 points and laudes the velvety structure, precision, and drinkability. Antonio Galloni emphasizes the open, accessible style and the refined balance that make this vintage so appealing.
Drinking window and food and wine pairings
The 2023 Napanook is already remarkably accessible, but will evolve beautifully between 2027 and 2040.
Preferably serve the wine at 16 to 18°C and decant it about an hour before serving.
An excellent accompaniment to grilled beef, sirloin, rack of lamb, game dishes, duck breast, truffle dishes, roasted mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses.

Easily rivaling the excellent 2021—might it be even better?—Dominus's 2023 Napanook originates largely from the middle portion of the vineyard as a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Qualitatively and stylistically, it sits nicely between the lighter, crisper Othello and the vin de garde produced from the more gravelly section of the vineyard at the back, closest to the Mayacamas. Cherries and dusty loam are joined by hints of vanilla on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is lush, with a seductive swell of fruit and tannins that flows seamlessly into a long finish tinged with black olives and black tea, framed by soft tannins.
Director of Viticulture and Winemaking Tod Mostero is feeling better than the last time I saw him, when he had made the decision not to release any 2022s from the property's dry-farmed vineyard. Looking at the 2023s, Mostero pointed out that the weather strongly influenced the outcome, starting with plentiful winter rains—16 inches in January, versus a historical average of five inches. February was normal, but then March again saw a big difference—12 inches versus an average of five inches. Budbreak was correspondingly delayed, not taking place until April 12. "Development was consistently two weeks late over the course of the season," he said, while also noting that summer into fall was moderate (no temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit were recorded during August) and dry, allowing ample hang time and full ripening. Harvest took place from October 7 through October 18.
Winemaking includes the use of an optical sorter, with fermentations starting at 15 degrees Celsius and ramping up to 30 degrees Celsius before cooling down as the yeast activity decreases. The wines are racked to tank, where they undergo malolactic fermentation prior to being run to barrel. Lots are kept separate for approximately nine months, with preliminary blending taking place the summer following harvest.
The three wines reviewed here roughly represent three different sectors of the vineyard. Othello (2,000 cases) is drawn from the front portion of the property—between the winery and Highway 29—where the soils have the highest proportion of silt and clay. Napanook (3,500 cases) derives from the blocks just behind the winery, while Dominus (7,000 cases) comes from the stoniest blocks furthest from Highway 29, pushed up against the Mayacamas. All three wines were scheduled to be released in spring 2026.

Aromas of blueberries, ash and stones with hints of blackberries, orange peel and chocolate. It’s medium-bodied with medium-round tannins that are polished and velvety but always in check. Cedar and baking spices like nutmeg on the palate. Lovely soft and silky texture with a long finish. Enchanting and delicious. 92% cabernet sauvginon, 4% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.

From: Napa Valley Soars: The 2023 & 2024 Cabernet Sauvignons (Nov 2025)
The 2023 Napanook is deep, bold and luscious right out of the gate. Black cherry, lavender, dried herbs and graphite fill out its mid-weight frame quite nicely. I expect the 2023 will drink well with minimal cellaring, as it is already quite open and doesn't quite have the tannic palate presence of more important years.

Dominus Estate, owned by famed winemaker and CEO Christian Moueix (also owner of Pétrus, Trotanoy, La Fleur-Petrus, Hosanna, among others), is part of the Napanook Historical Landmark and widely regarded as one of the oldest vineyards (1836) of Napa Valley, California. The estate was bought in 1946 by the legendary winemaker and visionary John Daniels, and passed to his daughters in 1970.
In 1982, they entered into a partnership with Christian Moueix, which resulted in Dominus Estate. Moueix bought all the shares in 1995 and is therefore now the sole owner. The first Dominus wine appeared in 1983 and immediately gained international attention thanks to the influence of Moueix.
Dominus Estate produces a second wine, Napanook, first marketed in 1996, and a third called “Othello”, an entry-level wine. The domain covers 44 hectares, divided into 14 plots with mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (87%). However, it also says some petit verdot and cabernet franc. The merlot grape has not been used for the “Grand Vin” since 2002, but is still occasionally used in the Napanook wines. The winery, which was built in 1996, is made of stones held together with metal wire and represents the terroir of the vineyard. The architectural style is completely in harmony with the landscape and protects against the heat during the day and the cold at night.
The vineyard's origins at the Napa Valley cult winery Dominus Estate date back to 1836, when it was known as the Napanook Vineyard. This makes it one of the oldest vineyards in California, and therefore also in the United States. Napanook later became part of the Inglenook winery, which in turn became the property of California wine pioneer John Daniel in 1946. After his death, his daughters Robin Lail and Marcia Smith inherited the 44-hectare Napanook vineyard in 1982 and asked oenologist Christian Moueix to partner with them. At the time, Christian Moueix was director and winemaker responsible for top Bordeaux wine estates such as Petrus, Château Trotanoy and Château La Fleur-Pétrus. With the first vintage 1983 of this new Californian
winery Christian Moueix chose the name Dominus Estate. The fact that Christian Moueix has pledged his heart to Dominus Estate, of which he has been the sole owner since 1995, is apparent from his total dedication and commitment to achieve the ultimate result. Dominus is a wine with a clear Bordeaux aristocracy with the use of grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
