Description
Camus Père & Fils is a historic Burgundian wine producer based in Gevrey-Chambertin, with roots dating back to 1732. The Camus family has owned the estate since the 1930s. The estate covers 18 hectares (44 acres), two-thirds of which are renowned Grand Cru vineyards, including parcels in Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin and a small parcel in Mazis-Chambertin. The remaining third is made up of village-level vineyards. The estate primarily grows Pinot Noir, with some Aligoté. Grapes are hand-picked and destemmed, followed by fermentation in tanks. The wines undergo malolactic fermentation before being aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with an average of 75% new oak, varying by cuvée. The wines are clarified with egg whites prior to bottling.
As for the 2016 vintage, the Chambertin Grand Cru from Camus Père & Fils is a remarkable expression of Pinot Noir from this esteemed vineyard. The 2016 harvest in Burgundy was challenging due to frost and mildew, which greatly reduced yields. Thanks to a warm late summer, the wines were ultimately of high quality. The Pinots show elegance and freshness, in short a difficult year in quantity, but top in quality.
Chambertin is perhaps one of the most iconic plots of land in the wine world. This Grand Cru, located in Gevrey-Chambertin is divided like a mosaic among the great wine producer from the Cote de Nuits. The vines of Camus are located a little lower on the slope and lie between the vines of Prieur Jacques, Launay Horiot and Rebourseau Henri. This Grand Cru makes special wines, small editions, enormous concentration and great expression of the terroir. A special bottle of wine from a great terroir and a beautiful vintage.
