Description
This is one of the absolute top wines from Montalcino from the Casanova di Neri estate. This wine was the first Brunello where the highest quality was pursued and the land was worked with great respect. The grapes were picked by hand in September. The grapes were then fermented for a period of 23 days. The maturation of this wine took place for a period of 29 months in French oak barrels of 500 liters, after which the further maturation in the bottle was continued for at least another year. This producer belongs to the new generation of Brunello producers. The company was started in 1971, when Giovanni Neri bought the largest estate in the Montalcino area. The estate has a total of 39 hectares and is divided into 4 vineyards. The oldest vineyard is 50 years old. The vineyards are located at an altitude of approximately 350 meters above sea level. Casanova di Neri is one of the best producers of Brunello wines.
In terms of weather, the 2015 growing season had a good amount of rain, spread throughout the summer, with mild average temperatures. All things that helped to deliver perfectly ripe grapes in the phenolic side with sugar and acidity in perfect balance as we have not had for a long time. Clear aroma of violets, ripe black cherries, spices, balsamic notes, graphite and liquorice. Big and sweet tannins, endless mouthfeel with a very long sweet finish in the style of Cerretalto. All this is fused with great harmony. High aging potential. It should be served at 16-17 C°, opening the bottle at least 2-3 hours before.
Fermentation and maceration were natural, using only gravity to get the grapes into open conical fermenters, with a drop down system for 32 days. The wine was left to rest in wooden barrels for 30 months and bottle aged for 30 months. Suckling writes (100/100): "Drinkable now, but will go on forever" This is a super scarce 1.5 liter magnum.

Here's an important keepsake from a classic vintage. The Casanova di Neri 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto needs time to open, especially if you plan to drink the wine earlier than is recommended (you're best off waiting five years or more). This powerful wine is packed tight with black fruit, plum and summer ripe cherry. Those dark fruit tones segue to spice, baked clay, balsam herb and gardening soil. The oak is always more apparent in the Cerretalto (which is released one year later, as if it were a Riserva) compared to the Tenuta Nuova. The vineyard used makes a big difference, giving this wine more textural weight and thicker fiber. It's all a question of taste, but if you want power (with 15% alcohol), richness, sensuality and voluptuousness in your Brunello, Cerretalto is the bottle at the end of the rainbow.

Wow. Incredible purity and transparency with cherries, bark, mushroom, flower and slate/stone on the nose. Full-bodied yet agile and fresh with a fine tannin structure that runs the length of the wine and goes on forever. The polish, elegance and grace is breathtaking. Power with agility. A revelation for the 2016 vintage in Brunello. Drink in 2024 and onwards but wonderful to taste now.

From: Jekyll and Hyde: 2017 Brunello di Montalcino and 2016 Riservas (Dec 2021)
There’s something intriguing, alluringly dark, earthy – animal, even – yet floral and packed full of rich black fruits and exotic spices that defines the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto. This impresses with its cool-toned dark berries and minerals, complemented by bright acidity and sweet inner herbal tones. It’s not yet ready to reveal all of its charms, though it drops subtle hints each step of the way. A bitter twang keeps the expression lively and fresh, while grippy tannins saturate deeply and leave the palate aching with youthful tension, as notes of licorice, clove and a hint of ginger linger. What a wine!

The Casanova di Neri winery is located in the northeast of Montalcino, on the road to Torrenieri. Surrounding the winery is their Fiesole vineyard, with its Galestro soils and elevations ranging up to 380 meters. Farther east, in fact as far east in Montalcino that you can go, they also tend the Cerretalto vineyard, which feeds their late-release cru wine. Here, elevations are lower, yet the soils are unique, almost red with iron, mixing galestro marl with alluvial stones, eroded rock and magnesium. It is also from this sight, using massal selection, that Giacomo Neri planted his other vineyards. Moving slightly to the west, Podernuovo brings its high-elevation fruit to the mix, situated between 420-490 meters. And then to the south, for its warmer climate, lower elevations and the plush contours they create. Here we find Cetine near Sant’Angelo and the Giovanni Neri vineyard on the road to Castelnuovo dell'Abate. In fact, it’s a total of seven vineyards that the Neri family uses to compose their Brunello portfolio. While Cerretalto brings the power and mineral intensity, and Tenuta Nuova brings the elegance and balanced opulence, it’s the Brunello di Montalcino (often referred to as the “White Label”), with its classic lines and vivid fruit profile, that is the overachiever. This is only possible through an intricate understanding of terroir and how to blend it to perfection. In 2023, we’ll also see the release of Giacomo Neri’s next cru Brunello, the Giovanni Neri, coming from their Castelnuovo dell'Abate location, and an acquired vineyard that was already planted with fifty-year- old vines (which is quite old by Montalcino standards). Until that time, we can all get a taste of this new location through the Rosso di Montalcino “Giovanni Neri”. Gianlorenzo Neri (Giacomo Neri’s son) described 2017 as “the most Mediterranean vintage ever”. The property experienced a 35% loss of production to maintain integrity of the wines, so the family decided to place all of the Cerretalto fruit into the “White Label” Brunello, giving it a serious boost in character. Not afraid of technology, the Neri family also depended on rigorous selection through optical sorting. In the end, whether you consider their more modern leanings a blessing or a curse, this family is making some of the best wine in Montalcino.
