The 2015 Vergelegen The Mistake Merlot is a special and rare South African red wine with a story just as striking as the contents of the bottle. This cuvée originated from a misunderstanding between the Vergelegen team and Michel Rolland, but subsequently grew into an extremely limited bottling that has been deliberately repeated. As a result, The Mistake is not only a curiosity within the Vergelegen range, but above all a serious, concentrated, and refined wine in which Merlot plays the leading role, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and carefully constructed oak aging.

Vergelegen and the origin of The Mistake

Vergelegen is one of the big names in Stellenbosch and has built a long reputation with wines that combine classic structure with the ripe power of the Cape. The estate works with carefully selected plots and is known for its precise approach in both the vineyard and the cellar. Within that broad range, The Mistake occupies a unique place.

According to the winemaker's note, this wine originated from a misunderstanding between Michel Rolland and the Vergelegen team. What was initially not intended ultimately proved so interesting that they decided to embrace the “mistake” and repeat it where possible. The result is a small-production cuvée that is much more than a curiosity: this is a concentrated, characterful, and seriously constructed red wine with clear aging potential.

A small production with big ambition

The Mistake Merlot 2015 is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon . The wine comes from a specific vineyard on the estate, known as RL12, planted in 2002 on a northwest-facing slope. The combination of exposure, careful water management, and rigorous selection forms the basis for a wine with ripe fruit, structure, and tension.

The total production is extremely small: only 2,130 bottles . This immediately underscores the exclusive character of this wine. This is not a standard cuvée, but a limited bottling in which Vergelegen experiments at a high level and consciously opts for concentration, detail, and personality.

Vinification and aging

For the 2015 The Mistake, work was carried out with particular care in the cellar. The grapes were harvested by hand in small 10-kilogram crates and subsequently kept refrigerated for 24 hours to bring the temperature of the fruit down to 8 to 10 degrees. This slows down unwanted enzymatic reactions and ensures that the fruit can be processed in a highly controlled manner.

After manual selection, the grapes were destemmed but not crushed. Subsequently, the wine underwent a cold maceration of seven days at a low temperature. Afterward, fermentation slowly began, first partly spontaneously and then with a selected yeast culture. The must was pumped over the skins four to six times a day and ultimately remained on the skins for no less than 40 days . That is a long extraction period that clearly contributes to the depth, color, and structure of the wine.

After pressing, malolactic conversion took place in stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine aged for 18 months in French oak , 50% of which was new , in 225-liter barriques from Taransaud and Darnajou, among others. This aging process gives the wine extra structure, refinement, and a subtle spicy undertone without overpowering the fruit.

Scent, taste and character

The 2015 Vergelegen The Mistake Merlot presents itself as a ripe, layered, and refined red wine. On the nose, notes of dark forest fruit, ripe berries, and cherries immediately come to the fore, complemented by subtle spices and a light touch of oak. The Merlot provides roundness and velvety fruit, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds just a little extra grip and freshness.

On the palate, the wine clearly shows concentration, yet remains beautifully balanced. Ripe black and red fruit is combined with nuances of cherries, spices, and a fine earthy undertone. The tannins are present but refined, with a structure that gives the wine length and seriousness without making it harsh. It is precisely this combination of ripe fruit, spiciness, and fine tannins that makes The Mistake interesting for lovers of classic, oak-aged Merlot blends.

The finish is long and softly spicy, with persistent notes of ripe berries, cherry, and a subtle tannin structure that lingers beautifully. This is not a heavy powerhouse, but a carefully constructed wine with depth and a remarkably refined texture.
