Persoonlijke gegevens
The 2020 Quinta da Falorca Noblesse Oblige Branco is one of Quinta da Falorca's most ambitious white wines. This exceptional cuvée is made from Encruzado, the most important white grape of the Dão, and demonstrates why this variety is increasingly cited as one of Europe's great white grapes. The wine combines ripe fruit, minerality, tension, and impressive gastronomic versatility with aging potential that will surprise many enthusiasts. The 2020 is the successor to the 2015, as the wine is only produced in cool years. The bottles are all numbered, and only a few thousand bottles are ever made.
Quinta da Falorca and the power of Encruzado
Quinta da Falorca is one of the traditional producers of the Dão and is located in Silgueiros, one of the most prized areas of the region. Here, granite-rich soils, altitude, and a temperate continental climate create conditions ideal for the production of refined white wines.
Encruzado is considered the flagship of the Dão and is known for its ability to combine both freshness and complexity. In the best years, the grape variety produces wines that can rival great white wines from other classic European wine regions in terms of depth and aging potential.
With Noblesse Oblige, Quinta da Falorca demonstrates just how versatile Encruzado can be. The result is a wine that is both appealing when young and ages excellently.
The wine undergoes wood aging with weekly bâtonnage, and after bottling, the wine remains in the cellars for at least one year.
Dão: one of the most underrated wine regions of Portugal
The Dão is located in the interior of Portugal and is surrounded by various mountain ranges that offer protection against extreme weather conditions. This results in a relatively cool climate with large differences between day and night temperatures.
The combination of altitude, granite soils, and a long growing season results in grapes with excellent aromatic development and the preservation of natural freshness. These conditions are ideal for Encruzado, which finds its most refined expression here.
The region is known for white wines characterized by minerality, tension, and gastronomic versatility, qualities that are clearly evident in Noblesse Oblige.
Scent, taste and style
The 2020 Noblesse Oblige presents a complex and refined aromatic profile. In the fragrance, notes of lemon peel, chamomile, smoked almonds, and shells combine with subtle mineral nuances reminiscent of wet rock and a sea breeze.
On the palate, the wine immediately reveals its tension and precision. The structure is medium-bodied but possesses striking intensity and depth. Ripe citrus fruits, subtle spiciness, and a light salinity are supported by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and energetic.
The mineral component plays an important role and gives the wine a refined, almost salty signature. As a result, the wine remains constantly balanced between richness and freshness.
The finish is long, clean, and strikingly salty-mineral, a stylistic characteristic that lovers of gastronomic white wines will particularly appreciate.
Professional assessment
James Suckling awarded the 2020 Quinta da Falorca Noblesse Oblige 93 points . He highlights the aromas of lemon peel, smoked almonds, chamomile, and seashells, as well as the combination of freshness, tension, and the long, salty finish that makes this wine so distinctive.

The 2015 Branco Noblesse Oblige Quinta da Falorca is an Encruzado, although there is a small percentage of Malvasia (around 5%) mixed in with the old vines. It was partly (only 20% of the juice) aged for two months in new French oak, the rest in stainless steel. It comes in at 14% alcohol. This is the Noblesse Oblige white—it has a hard act to follow given how well the red has performed over the years. This late release was mostly sourced from very old vines—70% of the grapes were from a vineyard with around 80-year-old vines, while 30% of the grapes were from a vineyard with 16-year-old vines.
This bears a lot of similarity at first blush to the regular 2015 Encruzado Reserva, reviewed long ago, but for the late release. In fact, there are some other differences, too, said Mario Ferreira. For the "regular Encruzado, we harvested by the end of August. For the Noblesse Oblige, we have kept the grapes of a few parcels of the old vine and a bit of the new vine, and we just harvested in October after all the red grapes were picked. [After the oak aging], we aged the total wine in the vats for two years more, different than the regular Encruzado that is bottled in February of the following year." The Encruzado on the regular Reserva also comes mostly from the winery's younger vineyards.
What you get is something a little richer, a little more complex and equally well structured. It might not have the simple purity and freshness of the regular Reserva, though, and the flavor profile is certainly a bit different due to the ripeness and the slight oxidative nuance. Tightly wound, this shows good depth, precision and power on the finish. It is vibrant and energetic. It also shows some maturity and complexity, however. That gives this a nuance that the regular 2015 Reserva, of course, lacked when it was seen young in 2016. I very much like that nuance and how it blends into the whole. The fruit, of course, is generally supported by the wine's brilliant structure. For the moment, this is superb. I am wondering how much longer this will hold, though, whether it will justify extended cellaring going forward. It is certainly a bit different. I'd recommend some caution, but it seems likely to hold for much of the remaining years of this decade, maybe more. We'll still be a bit conservative for the moment. There were just 983 bottles produced. Not yet imported, this runs around 25 euros in Portugal.

Located in Pindelos or Silgueiros, Quinta da Falorca is the reference model and top wine house from the Portuguese Dão. No volumes but only quality. It is therefore quite difficult to get a Quinta da Falorca and especially their high-end wines. This is due to a number of factors, namely:
- unprecedented fine wines
- made in very small quantities
- and still very affordable
Quinta da Falorca is one of the secret heroes of the international wine world: winegrowers such as the quality-striving Carlos Figueiredo, who values his native Dão and the local terroir, but also produces world-class wines. Among his wines, wine lovers will find the individuality that is often lost in times of increasing globalization of the wine taste: authentic, traditionally prepared wines with a radiant regional character, made from indigenous grape varieties in a limited edition.
