Description
The ViƱa Ardanza Reserva from the classic Rioja house La Rioja Alta is a blend of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha from 30-year-old vines in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. After fermentation, the tempranillo portion of the wine was aged in American oak barriques for 36 months. The Garnache (Grenache) portion spent 36 months in 2 to 3 year old barrels. After bottling, the wine matured in the bottle for another four and a half years before being released to the market. The nose is very fresh, with bitter black fruit, earthy notes, minerals, coffee, tobacco. Wonderfully soft, juicy in the mouth, with creamy tannins and well-integrated fine acidity. And then the aftertaste! It is long, vibrant and elegant. Great (storage) wine (2035).

2017 was not an easy harvest, but it produced some beautiful and classical wines, like the 2017 ViƱa Ardanza Reserva, which shows a little more advancement and polish and is ready to drink. It was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from their vineyard La Pedriza in Tudelilla. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in American oak barrels, 36 months for the Tempranillo and 30 for the Garnacha (that was harvested 15 days later), with six rackings. It's ripe and aromatic, tertiary, with 14.5% alcohol and mellow acidity, a medium-bodied palate and sleek tannins. It has a pungent note of clove and pepper, some licorice and ink and the cherries in liqueur from the Garnacha. An updated classical Ardanza. 600,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021.
The Gran Reserva 904 carries the mention "Selección Especial" in the 2015 vintages for the first time in its 120 years of history. It follows the 2011 vintage and was released in April 2023. They now have 587 hectares of vineyard that allow them to produce 100% of the grapes they use for their 1.5 million bottles. This is one of the most traditional addresses in Rioja. and they release the wines quite late and have the equivalent of eight years in stock.

A more vibrant and fruitier expression of Ardanza this year with strawberries, mussels, warm spices and berries. Round and silky on the palate with lovely spices and a long, nicely saline finish. A nice touch of creaminess works really well here and further extends the finish. 80% tempranillo and 20% garnacha. Drink or hold.

ViƱa Ardanza is a wine that embodies the long history of Rioja. The 2017 Gran Reserva ViƱa Ardanza is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha sourced from Rioja Alta and Oriental. Aged for up to 36 months in American oak, it presents a ripe profile with aromas of black fruit, earth and balsamic, complemented by cedar and vanilla. On the palate, it is dry and rich, with a juicy texture and fine, polished tannins that culminate in a bold and lingering finish. This is a vibrant red wine with harmonious balance.

Located in the Barrio de la Estación area in Haro, La Rioja Alta is one of the regionās historic wineries, founded in 1890. In the 1970s, the viticultural group began to expand into other regions in Spain, including Ribera del Duero (Bodega Aster) and RĆas Baixas (Lagar de Fornelos), also purchasing Torre de OƱa in Rioja Alavesa. The picturesque old winery hosts a well-equipped visitor center and underground galleries that house some of the 30,000 American oak barrels they craft themselves. Some wines are Riojan classics, such as ViƱa Ardanza or Gran Reserva 904, delivering quintessential Rioja flavor. One number sums up their approach: they currently store eight yearsā worth of wine in their cellars.

We write the year 1890. Five Basque winegrowers from the Rioja set up the 'Sociedad VinĆcola de la Rioja Alta' in Haro on 10 July, thereby laying the foundation for the production of high-quality wines. From the very beginning, it is done professionally.
The French oenologist Vigier, who at the time was considered the authority in the field of wine knowledge, is recruited as an expert. In the year 1891 the wine gets its final name 'La Rioja Alta'. It is the birth of a legend. It would take until 1941 for the first wine to be registered as a trademark. This was the famous ViƱa Ardanza, still one of the most important wines of the Bodega. In the past, all barrels were made in their own cooperage. After a longer break, that tradition was restored in 2002. The wood imported from America dries for two years before being processed into barrels. 1970 was an important year with a new barrel cellar, the expansion of the vineyards and the purchase of excellent plots. This also meant the birth of ViƱa Arana and ViƱa Alberdi. Today, the winery is one of the classics of the Rioja. Wines such as the 'Gran Reserva 890' and 'Gran Reserva 904' are unforgettable experiences. But the above mentioned reserves are also excellent wines for those who love matured wines and the traditional rioja style. A jewel among the venerable bodegas!
