Gaja Winery
Gaja is one of Italy's most influential wineries and played a key role in Barbaresco's international reputation. Founded in 1859 in the village of Barbaresco, the estate, under the leadership of Angelo Gaja, became one of Piedmont's great icons. Through stricter selection in the vineyards, lower yields, and meticulous vinification, Gaja significantly raised the bar for Nebbiolo. Today, the estate is led by the new generation of Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni Gaja, but the focus remains the same: crafting wines that express the character of Barbaresco's finest vineyards as purely as possible.
2014 Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi
Costa Russi, along with Sorì Tildìn and Sorì San Lorenzo, is one of Gaja's renowned single-vineyard Barbarescos. Located just below Sorì Tildìn on the edge of the village of Barbaresco, the vineyard is known for its elegant and refined Nebbiolo style. Costa Russi wines often display a combination of aromatic finesse, ripe fruit, and a soft, polished structure that makes them relatively accessible in their youth without sacrificing ageing potential.
The 2014 vintage in Piedmont
2014 was a cooler vintage in Piedmont, but a warm spell at the end of the growing season still allowed the grapes to ripen well. The Gaja family left the grapes on the vine for a long time, which created extra concentration and aromatic complexity. The result is a Barbaresco with riper fruit than one might expect from this vintage, combined with fresh acidity and a clear structure.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color with dark reflections. The nose opens with a broad and intense aroma of black cherry, red currant, and dried cherry, complemented by notes of spice, tar, leather, and licorice. Behind these, aromas of almond, strawberry, cranberry, tobacco, and subtle herbal nuances also emerge.
The palate is full and layered, combining finesse and structure. The tannins are firm yet refined, supported by lively acidity. The fruit remains clear and concentrated, with notes of cherry and ripe red berries. The wine has a long, structured finish, revealing spicy and mineral notes. Despite its power, the wine maintains an elegant and refined balance.
Reviews and reputation
This vintage received 94 points from The Wine Advocate. Antonio Galloni awarded it 96 points and describes the 2014 Costa Russi as a particularly refined and seductive Barbaresco with silky tannins and fragrant fruit aromas. According to Galloni, the wine already shows charm in its youth, but further bottle aging will bring additional complexity and depth.
Storage capacity
The combination of fresh acidity, firm tannins, and aromatic complexity gives this Barbaresco excellent aging potential. The wine will continue to develop with bottle aging and is expected to continue refining until around 2044.

The 2014 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a beautiful wine that delivers profound color saturation with deep ruby highlights and blackish intensity. I would describe the nose as being more horizontal rather than vertical, if that makes sense. In other words, the bouquet makes its approach with wide intensity and large-scale aromas of black fruit, spice, tar, leather and licorice. It offers fewer of the sudden high notes or moments of sharpness that you get in 2013. Despite the common perception that this was a very cool vintage, the fruit here actually tastes riper and rounder than you might expect. That's because the vintage heat all came toward the end of the growing season, and the Gaja family left fruit on the vines to the end. In the mouth, the wine shows depth and finesse with some stubborn firmness at this young stage. It needs to flesh out further with more bottle aging.

The nose is replete here with dried red cherries, almonds, strawberries, glazed cranberries, some leafy nuances and already some tobacco and cigar box. Full-bodied and very layered with such concentration for this vintage. Firm yet sturdy tannins, no shortage of fine acidity and a long, structured finish. Such depth. Drink in 2020.

From: 2014 Barbaresco: An October Surprise (Oct 2017)
Soft contours, silky tannins and sweet, perfumed fruit are some of the signatures in the 2014 Costa Russi. As always, Costa Russi is the most polished and open-knit of these wines in its youth. Succulent fruit, hard candy and lifted, perfumed aromatics give the 2014 considerable early appeal, but I expect time in bottle will work its usual magic. Today, the 2014 is showing only the barest hint of its potential. Even in the early going, though, the Costa Russi is a totally sexy wine.

The history of winery Gaja starts in 1859, the year in which Giovanni Gaja, a local grape grower in Barbaresco, Piemonte, founded a wine company under his own name. A generation later, it is Angelo, grandfather of the current owner, who continues to make wine with the same determination as his father. He is supported in this by Clotilde Rey with whom he marries in 1905. They teach their scion Giovanni named after his grandfather so that as a winemaker you should not make any concessions; nothing should be at the expense of the quality of the wine.
In 1961 Giovannis son Angelo works in the family business. After graduating as an economist from the University of Turin and graduating from the School of Viticulture & Oenology in Alba, the young Angelo left abroad for an internship at wine farms in Bordeaux, Burgundy, along the Rin and in California. Full of fresh ideas, he had now returned to his native Piemonte. When Angelo Gaja took over his parents' company in 1970, he asked his old classmate and winemaker Guido Rivella to assist him. Together they implement a number of revolutionary changes for the region. For example, they sometimes reduce yields per hectare by up to half the number of liters allowed, they experiment with vinification methods, the planting of new - both red and white - grape varieties and pioneering ripening techniques. The results are astonishing and Gaja conquers the world with his beautiful Barbaresco's - the company's flagship.
The nebbiolo grapes for the Barbaresco of Gaja traditionally came from different vineyards. Angelos' father, grandfather and his father did just that before. Although young Angelo would not end this tradition, he launched a new line of Barbaresco's from a single vineyard. Interest in these experimental single vinyard wines became more and more popular. As a proponent of a dynamic, purely quality-oriented wine culture, the brilliant winemaker decides from 1996 to completely break with what he considers to be a conservative and restrictive Italian designation of origin. Only his traditional Barbaresco is still on the market as a prestigious DOCG. He deliberately 'declassifies' all other red single vineyard wines into regional Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. These are the Sorì San Lorenzo, the Sorì Tildìn and the Costa Russi. Gajas Barolo Sperss also underwent the same name change. With the exception of the Dagromis Barolo DOCG, Sito Moresco and Conteisa de Langhe also bear DOC. Langhe DOC is also on the label of his white toppers from Piemonte, the Rossj-Bass, Alteni di Brassica and Gaia & Rey. After all, for Gaja the abbreviation does not guarantee good quality of a wine but the name of the producer.
