Description
Château Latour from Pauillac withdrew a few years ago from the Bordeaux trading system of immediately after harvesting and offering a first to the market. They now release a vintage from their cellars every year that they think is perfect to enjoy now and for years to come. Although a monument such as Château Latour can of course still be preserved for a very long time. The 2014 vintage was only offered by the Château in March 2022. 97+/100 Parker and 99/100 Suckling
The 2014 Latour is one of the best wines from a vintage that favored the northern Médoc. The 2014 Latour is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.25% Merlot, 0.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.25% Petit Verdot. Blending aromas of wild berries and cassis with hints of cigar paper, loamy soil, black truffles and stylish new oak, it is full, rich and concentrated, the broad attack leads to a deep, tightly wound mid-palate framed by powdery, chalky tannins and clear acidity, ending with a long, mouth-watering finish.
This classically balanced, youthfully structured young wine appears to have a prodigious longevity. It's reminiscent of a modern take on a cooler vintage like 1996, although of course the maturity is more complete these days and the selection is even stricter than it was two decades ago.

The 2014 Latour is one of the very finest wines of a vintage that favored the northern Médoc. Mingling aromas of wild berries and cassis with hints of cigar wrapper, loamy soil, black truffles and classy new oak, it’s full-bodied, rich and concentrated, its broad attack segueing into a deep, tightly wound mid-palate that’s framed by powdery, chalky tannins and bright acids, concluding with a long, mouthwatering finish. This classically balanced, youthfully structured young wine looks set to enjoy prodigious longevity. It’s reminiscent of a modern-day version of a cooler vintage such as 1996, though of course these days maturity is more complete and selection even more rigorous than was the case two decades ago.
With Château Latour's new releases for the year arriving on the market in the next few days, I took the opportunity to taste the wines with the estate's perfectionist technical director Hélène Génin on my most recent visit. I'll be including more insights into Latour's contemporary viticulture and winemaking—as well as some observations on what makes Latour's famous enclos so special—in my report on the bottled 2019s. This short article, in the interests of timeliness, is limited to the tasting notes themselves. As those notes make clear, between the expressive, charming 2017 Le Pauillac de Château Latour; the concentrated, impeccably balanced 2016 Les Forts de Latour; and the deep, introverted, utterly classical 2014 Latour itself, admirers of this estate will find three excellent wines that are cut from very different cloth, and all three are more than worthy of attention.

From: Château Latour: 2022 New Releases - Neal Martin (Mar 2022)
The 2014 Latour has a beautifully defined bouquet with intertwined blackberry, briary, crushed stone and pencil box scents. This takes time to unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with tobacco and graphite-infused black fruit framed by svelte tannins. This has a fine bead of acidity, cohesive with straight-down-the-line Pauillac tropes of graphite and tobacco towards the finish. Strict and aristocratic, the tobacco element has been accentuated with time. Superb.

I was not able to visit Château Latour back in December as my focus was upon the 2019s in bottle and, as we all know, the First Growth has kept inventory back to release their three wines when deemed to be mature. When I visited the estate in March to taste some mature vintages with Frédéric Engerer for an article that will appear in the future, we began with the three forthcoming releases that complement Antonio Galloni’s reviews that have already been published on Vinous.

From: Cellar Favorite: Château Latour: 2022 New Releases (Jan 2022)
The 2014 Latour captures the personality of the year in its linear, lithe construction. It's a decidedly understated Latour that is more about finesse than brawn. Bright red cherry/plum fruit, spice, mint and sweet tobacco open over time, but at this level, wines are more about a feel, an expression of place and a vintage. The 2014 Latour embodies all the best this cool, late-ripening growing season had to offer. I loved the 2014 when it was first shown, about five years ago, and I love it today. It is a super-classic Pauillac.

The Château Latour is one of the most famous wineries in the world. It is located in the Bordeaux in Pauillac. It is located on the border with the Saint-Julien wine region. Château Latour is classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé according to the Bordeaux wine classification system of 1855. The estate covers 60 hectares and approximately 78% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and a little cabernet franc and petit are added.
History
Château Latour has played an important role in the history of the region. Throughout the centuries, many old documents about this winery have been preserved in the archives. This unique heritage shows extraordinary stability and continuity in the estate and those who have worked there throughout Latour's long history, which has undoubtedly been an important factor in the exceptional regularity and quality of the wines.
The oldest document with the mention Latour dates from 1331 and is an authorization given by Lord Pons to Gaucelme de Castillon to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert. Château Latour then appears in 1378 in Jean Froissart's "Chronicles". This was the time of the 100 Years' War. The "Tour de Saint Maubert" was a fortress to guard the estuary, manned by Breton soldiers for the King of France. After a three-day siege, the Anglo-Gascon army seized the fort and installed a garrison.
