Description
Louis Roederer's Cristal champagne is the extremely exclusive champagne that is only made in the best years. Once specially made for the Russian Tsar's court, now appreciated by enthusiasts worldwide. Unfortunately extremely scarce.
The grapes come from 4 parcels - two in Aÿ, one in Mesnil and one in Avize - all selected for their ripeness and ability to develop further. There is a racy and exotic nose with quite expressive red fruit and a more pinot-driven shape and structure. The palate has very firm phenolics, which will benefit from further ageing. The silkiness is there, especially on the finish. Give this until 2020 and then 10+ years. Much more powerful, structured style than regular Cristal. This 2013 Cristal Rosé comes from 100% biodynamic farming on these four parcels. Cellar Master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon describes the Cristal Rosé as a laser beam on the palate, very straight, sharp and precise yet elegant, intensely fruity and chalky. Very fine wild red fruit aromas on the nose, with a lovely freshness on the chalky palate. The delicious champagne is in a beautiful bottle and packed in an extremely luxurious gift box. The 2013 Cristal Rosé has received the almost maximum score of 99/100 points from Parker and 98/100 from Suckling and has a drinking window up to 2060+

April 2021 Week 2, The Wine Advocate
A candidate for wine-of-the-vintage honors in Champagne, Roederer's 2013 Cristal Rosé is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, red berries, stone fruit, freshly baked bread and tangerine oil. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, the vintage's bright girdling acids are amply cloaked in exuberant, expressive and notably concentrated fruit; so while this Cristal is as tensile and age-worthy as one would expect, it's also impressively fleshy and generous given the year. Concluding with an intensely sapid finish, the 2013 isn't as overtly structured as the muscular, tightly wound 2012: rather, it's the 2013's alliance of cut and flesh, precision and charm that's so compelling this year. This is another banner vintage for what I consider the reigning champion of the region's tête de cuvée bottlings, and it will be worth an effort to acquire.
This small report covers four recent releases from Louis Roederer: the superb 2013 Cristal and Cristal Rosé, and the house's two promising debut offerings in the genre of Coteaux Champenois. The Cristal releases speak for themselves, and I refer readers looking for more context to my feature on this important cuvée in the March 2020 Week 1 issue of "The Wine Advocate." Representing more of a novelty, however, the Coteaux are worthy of special comment.
The Coteaux project began two decades ago, when chef des caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon commissioned an analysis of the house's vineyard holdings, looking for sites with sufficient clay content to produce still wine. In 2002, Roederer planted in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ lieu-dit Charmont with Burgundian selections (their in-house sélection massale program not yet being sufficiently advanced to supply their needs), farming the vineyard with higher canopies and without hedging, pruning short to limit yields.
Their first essay in vinification came in 2014, and more seriously in 2015, Lecaillon refining choices relating to the proportion of stems retained and élevage. This 2018 red, in other words, is the culmination of a long journey. Its white counterpart, by contrast, is the result of a coup de foudre: Lecaillon tasted a 1961 Coteaux from Mesnil-sur-Oger and, he tells me, adored it. Having initially earmarked Avize as the most plausible source for such a wine, he immediately changed his focus, and the result is the 2018 reviewed here. Both are fine-boned, precise and charming wines, without any Burgundian pretentious but rather authentically Champenois personalities; and both bear the "Hommage à Camille" label, in honor of the house's grande dame, Camille Olry Roederer, who regularly served Coteaux Champenois to her guests.

Louis Roederer is a prestigious champagne producer based in the Champagne region of France. The House of Louis Roederer is known for its commitment to quality, traditional winemaking methods and its signature cuvée, Cristal.
History of Louis Roederer
Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 by a German wine merchant named Louis Roederer. The house started as a wine shop and became involved in the production of Champagne in the early 19th century. In 1827, Louis Roederer's cousin, Adolphe Roederer, took over the business. Adolphe played a crucial role in the expansion and growth of this producer. He traveled extensively to build relationships with European courts, including the Russian Imperial Court. In 1876, Louis Roederer created the iconic Cristal Champagne. It was originally produced exclusively for the Russian Tsars and was presented in a crystal clear bottle, which is the origin of the name 'Cristal'. Louis Roederer remained a family business for many years. However, in 1932 the Rouzaud family, relatives of the Roederer family, took over the house. The Rouzaud family owns and manages Louis Roederer to this day. Like many companies in Champagne, Louis Roederer faced challenges during the World Wars, including damage to their cellars. Despite these difficulties, they persevered and continued to produce exceptional champagne. Louis Roederer has a long history of producing high quality champagnes. They are known for their traditional winemaking methods, including hand harvesting, fermentation in oak barrels and long-term aging in cellars.
Cristal
One of the most famous Champagnes produced by Louis Roederer is Cristal. Created in 1876, Cristal is a prestigious and luxurious cuvée originally produced for the Russian Tsars. It is typically a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes with Chardonnay as the dominant grape variety. They are known for their exceptional quality, elegance and aging potential. It is known for its fine, persistent bubbles, a rich and creamy texture and a harmonious balance of flavors and aromas. Cristal is highly regarded by wine critics and collectors worldwide. It consistently receives high ratings and is considered one of the best Champagnes available. Bottles of Cristal are often collected and aged for special occasions. The clear crystal bottle in which Cristal was originally presented was changed to a conventional bottle design in the early 20th century. This change was made to protect the taste and quality of the wine, as the clear glass was found to be sensitive to light exposure. Today, Cristal is usually bottled in an elegant, clear glass bottle with gold packaging.
Louis Roederer's vineyards
Louis Roederer owns and manages vineyards in the best Champagne crus, including the Grand Cru vineyards of Verzenay, Verzy and Ay, among others. These vineyards supply the grapes for their exceptional wines.
Assortment by Louis Roederer
In addition to Cristal, Louis Roederer produces a range of other champagnes, including Brut Premier, Vintage Brut, Rosé and Blanc de Blancs. These wines suit a wide range of preferences and occasions. Louis Roederer's Champagnes have received critical acclaim from wine critics and publications around the world and are considered some of the finest Champagnes produced in the region.
