Gaja Winery
Gaja is one of Italy's most influential wineries and has played a key role in Piedmont's international reputation for decades. Founded in 1859 in Barbaresco, the estate, under the leadership of Angelo Gaja, became one of the great icons of the Italian wine world. Through strict selection in the vineyard, low yields, and meticulous vinification, Gaja significantly raised the bar for Nebbiolo. Today, the estate is led by the new generation of Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni Gaja, but the focus remains the same: making wines that express the Barbaresco terroir as purely as possible.
2013 Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo
Sorì San Lorenzo is one of Barbaresco's most famous Cru vineyards and, along with Costa Russi and Sorì Tildìn, forms Gaja's historic trio of top wines. Located right next to the village of Barbaresco, the vineyard is known for its powerful, structured style. The 2013 vintage also marks a significant moment for the estate. For the first time, the wine was produced entirely as 100% Nebbiolo and re-released as Barbaresco DOCG, after a small percentage of Barbera had been added in previous years.
A historic vintage
The 2013 vintage is considered a classic and highly structured vintage in Piedmont. The relatively cool growing season and long ripening produced Nebbiolo with fresh acidity, pronounced aromatic precision, and firm tannins. Furthermore, the yield of Sorì San Lorenzo was approximately 30% lower than usual, which resulted in additional concentration and intensity.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color with light garnet hues. The nose opens majestically with aromas of ripe red berries, orange peel, and floral notes, complemented by more complex nuances of meat, herbs, and mineral accents. As the wine opens, notes of graphite, menthol, licorice, lavender, and subtle smoke also emerge.
Powerful and impressively structured on the palate. The tannins are firm yet ripe, giving the wine a distinct architecture. The fruit remains bright and intense with notes of cherry, dark berries, and spice. The wine combines enormous depth and density with a striking freshness and elegance. The finish is long, powerful, and complex with a classic Nebbiolo signature.
Reviews and reputation
This vintage received the maximum score of 100 points from James Suckling, who describes the wine as a majestic Nebbiolo with impressive depth, density, and ripe tannic structure. Antonio Galloni awarded the wine 98 points, highlighting its classic power, intense structure, and enormous aging potential. According to Galloni, the 2013 is among the most impressive recent vintages of Sorì San Lorenzo.
Storage capacity
Thanks to its powerful tannin structure and concentrated fruit, this Barbaresco has excellent aging potential. The wine can continue to develop for decades and is expected to reach its optimal drinking window from around 2025 until well after 2040.

Congratulations to the Gaja family and their 2013 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo. This is a sheer and powerful expression of Nebbiolo that boasts a very firm and precise textural quality. The wine is 100% Nebbiolo, as blended Barbera is no longer part of the Sorì San Lorenzo DNA. The tannins are sharply delineated with a crunchy snap that you feel on the palate. This should definitely serve to keep the wine firmly rooted and committed to a slow aging trajectory. That structural firmness is the defining characteristic of this wine, and that unique identity is even more evident now that this wine is officially classified as Barbaresco.
This exciting set of wines from the Gaja family represents a true stylistic departure and a not-so-subtle break with the past. I enjoyed a very interesting tasting with Gaia Gaja at her family's Barbaresco property in May. As I tasted through the wines recorded below, I made a note to myself regarding what I perceived as a sharper tannic delineation in the wines and a more focused quality to the fruit. These wines are noticeably less fleshy, chewy or succulent compared to past vintages. They are tonic, crisp, angular and fiercely determined in a uniquely distinct manner. Angelo Gaja joined us at the conclusion of my tasting to exchange greetings. I asked if there was any new news to relay to my readers. The father and daughter team exchanged furtive glances and announced sheepishly: "Yes, there is something..." Have I piqued your interest? Look no further than the appellation field: The Langhe Nebbiolo DOC designation on the Costa Russi, Sorì Tildìn and Sorì San Lorenzo wines has been replaced by Barbaresco DOCG. These celebrated wines (that in the past saw the addition of 5% Barbera) are now 100% expression of Nebbiolo. "This change is something we've been discussing as a family for a long time," says a smiling Gaia Gaja. This is indeed a new chapter for Gaja.

Majestic aromas of crushed berry, meat, orange peel. Full body, very tannic yet ripe tannins and exquisite fruit. Amazing depth and density. They said they macerated a little more than normal because the fruit was perfect. A classic nebbiolo that reminds me of the great 1996. Really cool. About 30% less production. Don’t touch for five to 10 years. A celebratory wine for Gaja’s return to the Barbaresco appellation.

From: Barbaresco: Worlds Apart (Oct 2016)
Gaja's Sorì San Lorenzo, arguably the most iconic of all the wines, is superb. The 2013 is dark, virile and imposing, with a more classically leaning expression of power than in the recent past, not to mention tons of raw intensity. A host of graphite, savory herb, menthol, licorice, lavender, smoke and dark-fleshed fruits meld into the huge, tannic finish. There is a touch of French oak, but the personality of this site marries very naturally with the cooperage.
- By Antonio Galloni on August 2016
This is a compelling set of new releases from Gaja. Over the last few years, the winery has been in a state of transition as Angelo and Lucia Gaja have gradually handed over control to their children Gaia, Rossana and, more recently, Giovanni. One of the first and most significant developments has been a move towards more sustainable farming, a shift that has been under way for a number of years, partly in response to climate change. But there is more to what is happening at Gaja than just farming. The style of the wines has also changed, in some ways subtly and some ways much more dramatically. Readers will see that in these new releases. The triple flagships Costa Russi, Sorì Tildìn and Sorì San Lorenzo are once again being bottled as Barbarescos, a move that will be continued when Conteisa and Sperss are released as Barolos next year. More importantly than what is on the label, though, the wines are quite different in style. Gaja skipped the 2012 vintage entirely for single-vineyard wines in both Barbaresco and Barolo, so the 2013s represent a sort of re-boot. The Barbaresco and Costa Russi are super-classic, with bright Nebbiolo color and very little, if any, French oak influence. The Sorì Tildìn and Sorì San Lorenzo, while more restrained than in the past, are a bit darker and show subtle but noticeable French oak inflections. Either way, the 2013 Barbarescos are fabulous. I found the whites less convincing this year. Those wines appear to be works in progress as the younger generation takes over. These are exciting times at Gaja, that much is obvious. Also tasted: 2015 Rossj-Bass, 2015 Alteni di Brassica, 2014 Chardonnay Gaia & Rey.

The history of winery Gaja starts in 1859, the year in which Giovanni Gaja, a local grape grower in Barbaresco, Piemonte, founded a wine company under his own name. A generation later, it is Angelo, grandfather of the current owner, who continues to make wine with the same determination as his father. He is supported in this by Clotilde Rey with whom he marries in 1905. They teach their scion Giovanni named after his grandfather so that as a winemaker you should not make any concessions; nothing should be at the expense of the quality of the wine.
In 1961 Giovannis son Angelo works in the family business. After graduating as an economist from the University of Turin and graduating from the School of Viticulture & Oenology in Alba, the young Angelo left abroad for an internship at wine farms in Bordeaux, Burgundy, along the Rin and in California. Full of fresh ideas, he had now returned to his native Piemonte. When Angelo Gaja took over his parents' company in 1970, he asked his old classmate and winemaker Guido Rivella to assist him. Together they implement a number of revolutionary changes for the region. For example, they sometimes reduce yields per hectare by up to half the number of liters allowed, they experiment with vinification methods, the planting of new - both red and white - grape varieties and pioneering ripening techniques. The results are astonishing and Gaja conquers the world with his beautiful Barbaresco's - the company's flagship.
The nebbiolo grapes for the Barbaresco of Gaja traditionally came from different vineyards. Angelos' father, grandfather and his father did just that before. Although young Angelo would not end this tradition, he launched a new line of Barbaresco's from a single vineyard. Interest in these experimental single vinyard wines became more and more popular. As a proponent of a dynamic, purely quality-oriented wine culture, the brilliant winemaker decides from 1996 to completely break with what he considers to be a conservative and restrictive Italian designation of origin. Only his traditional Barbaresco is still on the market as a prestigious DOCG. He deliberately 'declassifies' all other red single vineyard wines into regional Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. These are the Sorì San Lorenzo, the Sorì Tildìn and the Costa Russi. Gajas Barolo Sperss also underwent the same name change. With the exception of the Dagromis Barolo DOCG, Sito Moresco and Conteisa de Langhe also bear DOC. Langhe DOC is also on the label of his white toppers from Piemonte, the Rossj-Bass, Alteni di Brassica and Gaia & Rey. After all, for Gaja the abbreviation does not guarantee good quality of a wine but the name of the producer.
