Description
The Dominio de Atauta La Roza 2013 is an exceptional choice for lovers of characterful and elegant red wines.
The Ribera del Duero region: an area with character
Dominio de Atauta La Roza 2013 comes from the Ribera del Duero, a renowned wine region in the heart of Spain. This region is known for its high altitude, ranging from 850 to 1000 meters above sea level, and its chalky soils. The climate, with hot summers and cold winters, offers ideal conditions for grape growing. The large temperature differences between day and night contribute to the intense aromas and balanced acidity of the wines from this area.
The 2013 wine year: finesse thanks to a challenging season
The 2013 vintage was marked by a long growing season and a late harvest in Ribera del Duero. This was due to a cooler spring and summer, which allowed for a slow and even ripening of the grapes. The result is a wine with refined complexity, lively acidity and excellent structure. The 2013 vintage has been praised for its ageing potential and elegance.
Viticulture and grapes: attention to detail
The Dominio de Atauta La Roza 2013 is made from 100% Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo. The grapes come from old vines, some over 100 years old, which are deeply rooted in the chalky soils of the region. These old vines give low yields, but produce high quality grapes with a concentrated character. The wine is carefully vinified and matured for 16 months in French oak barrels, which contributes to the complex taste and aroma.
Tasting note of the La Roza 2013
The Dominio de Atauta La Roza 2013 offers a deep ruby red color with an expressive aroma of ripe blackberries, cherries, violets and subtle hints of spices and vanilla. In the mouth the wine is powerful and well structured, with velvety tannins and a long, balanced finish.

2013 Dominio de Atauta La Roza
RP 95+
Reviewed by: Luis Gutiérrez
Drink Date: 2018 - 2030
One of the finest wines I remember from Dominio de Atauta is an old vintage bottle of La Roza I drank one day with the previous owner. So, I was excited when they told me this time we'd taste the 2013 La Roza, produced with grapes from three plots in the La Roza zone of the Atauta Valley that are thought to be some 160 years of age. All the processes follow biodynamic principles, and the wine was bottled after 19 months in second use French barriques. It was closed and felt really tight, but it has the most elegant texture and impressive palate of all the wines. Unfortunately, this is one of those almost virtual wines, as only 295 numbered bottles were filled in September 2015. As with San Juan, the price for this had not yet been decided when I tasted it.
The 2013s were terrific, and scoring them is splitting hairs. Ultimately, it comes down to taste: if you prefer the more mineral Llanos del Almendro or the power of Valdegatiles. The two projects to resume producing San Juan and La Mala are great, but they are produced in tiny quantities, which makes them almost impossible to obtain.

The wine importer Miguel Sánchez's trip to Atauta was a fluke for the entire region. Passing through the Ribera del Duero, he discovered the small valley with its ancient, deserted vineyards, more than 400-year-old wine cellars, ancient cellar vaults and even the stone wine presses from the 13th century were still available. A wine wonderland that has fallen asleep.
The east of the DO was known to be difficult to exploit, as the vines are at a considerable height of nearly 1,000 meters. Miguel Sánchez came, saw and conquered: the youngest Tempranillo vines are 60 years old, the oldest vines are up to 160 years old, really incredible. An immense wealth! They immediately gave exceptionally beautiful results, after the wild plots were kissed awake. With the release of the first wines, it immediately became clear that this was not only one of the best wines from all over the country, but even from all over the world! The strict organic and parcel for parcel separately brought up wines are among the best ever extracted from the grape variety Tempranillo.
