Description
The 2013 Proprietary Red Continuum is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. The wine has matured for about 20 months on 80% new French oak This is a flawless masterpiece in the cap because what a wonderful wine this will be after a few years of plating. The wine has a dense ruby red / purple color with beautiful notes of blueberries, black cherries, graphite and a hint of earth. The wine is full bodied with a wonderful integration of acids, tannins, oak and alcohol. The tannins are still clearly present but silky and well integrated. This is a masterpiece by Tim Mondavi and his teams is a wine that can gracefully grow old without problems.

The blend of the 2013 Proprietary Red Continuum is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. This was aged in about 80% new French oak for 20 months prior to bottling. In his technical notes he said that 30% of production was declassified. A flawless, potential masterpiece in the making, the dense ruby/purple color, beautiful notes of blueberry, black cherry, graphite and a touch of earth and background smoke are followed by a full-bodied wine with gorgeous integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol. The tannins are present and substantial, but silky and well-integrated. This is a tour de force from Tim Mondavi and his team – a masterpiece of power and finesse that, although approachable now, should age gracefully for at least another 25-30 years.
Tim Mondavi’s 38-acre project high on Pritchard Hill continues to show fabulous progress and potential.

Impressive purity of fruit and definition with blackcurrant, oyster shell, blueberries and slate. Graphite, too. Very complex yet subtle. Full-bodied, very chewy and powerful yet polished and gorgeous. Muscular, well-formed tannins. Electric style. Drink in 2020.

The 2013 Proprietary Red Wine is a magnificent, grand Napa Valley wine endowed with superb depth, freshness and energy. The 2013 is so vital, so nuanced and so pure. Bright red cherry, plum and pomegranate fruit flavors literally burst from the glass. The purity of the flavors is just immense. I would prefer to cellar the 2013 for another few years, but it is utterly captivating, even in the early going.

Graphite, lavender, sage, cloves and menthol race out of the glass in the 2013 Continuum, a wine that is just as impressive in bottle as it was from barrel. An intensely saline, mineral-drenched wine endowed with serious depth and precision, the 2013 shines with exceptional structural intensity and power, all that despite just having been bottled. In 2013 the Cabernet Franc is way up, which helps give the wine more aromatic top notes as well as greater overall complexity. Simply put, the 2013 is a real knock-out.

The bonds of family run deep at Continuum, where Tim and Marcia Mondavi have created a world-class estate in just a few years. Here, high up on the Vaca Mountains, nestled between Ovid and Stagecoach, the Mondavis are making wines of pedigree and class. Tim Mondavi's daughter, Chiara, runs day to day winemaking, but no detail is too small to escape Tim Mondavi's attention. An increasing emphasis on Cabernet Franc, co-fermentations and less new oak are some of the more recent developments at Continuum. The attention to detail is equaled at only a handful of properties across the valley. Since 2012 Continuum is a 100% estate wine, so it is very much early days. Needless to say, it will be fascinating to watch this latest chapter in the Mondavi family history unfold over the coming years and decades.

Continuum Estate is located on the Pritchard hills in Vaca Mountains. About 60 miles northeast of San Francisco and about 8 miles southwest of St. Helena. From here you have a beautiful view of Oakland. On a good day you will see the Opus One Winery. And that is no coincidence, the Continuum Estate is a project of the Mondavi family (Tim Mondavi, his sister Marcia and Margrit Mondavi), who acquired two wine estates here in 2005. They merged them and had star architect Howard Becken build a new winery. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the well-known wineries Bryant, Chappellet and Colgin. The route was therefore clear from the start: Super-premium à la Napa Valley. And the conditions are excellent. There is the usual high-end winery, an excellent hillside location, but also the right terroir: volcanic and iron-rich soils.
The winery covers a total of 172 hectares, of which 41 hectares are currently planted with grapes, 60 hectares are planted. There are many olive trees and lush flora. Of course, the cabernet sauvignon (55%) is in the foreground here in Napa Valley, but other Bordeaux grape varieties are also grown, such as the cabernet franc (30%), merlot (4%) and petit verdot (11%). It's almost superfluous to mention that Continuum Estate didn't take much time to join California's high society and yet... that for six years now these blockbusters have received 96 points from Parker is very remarkable. If it says Mondavi, it also contains Mondavi! Robert Parker writes: "Tim Mondavi's new project continues to display exceptional promise. Kudos to Tim Mondavi for continuing the legacy of his family”
