Champagne du Goupil History

Champagne du Goupil is the brainchild of Anne-Sophie Hennique, a former executive at Champagne Salon and Champagne Delamotte. Originally from Versailles, Anne-Sophie studied literature at the Sorbonne, published her first novel in 2022, and has lived in Champagne for ten years. Now, together with her partner, Gaëtan Gillet, she is launching their own exclusive champagne brand, Champagne du Goupil. An exclusive, small-production champagne.

With its fox mascot, or goupil, the brand originated from a playful fable about a certain Monsieur Fox who traveled from Versailles to Champagne in search of the most fantastic bubbles. The wily connoisseur selected the finest vines, harvested his fruit, and decided never to leave Champagne again.

Location of Champagne du Goupil

Du Goupil is located in Avize, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, and Anne-Sophie produces only one exclusive Grand Cru Champagne: Champagne du Goupil, a vintage Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru. The cuvée is made exclusively from Grand Cru Chardonnay, aged for 10 years, 40% of which in oak. Production is extremely low. The 2013 is the very first edition and has two versions. The first was released in 2024, and this version has been bottle-aged for an additional year and will not be released until late spring 2025. This latest release has even more beautiful, integrated brioche notes. This is a superb champagne that keeps on giving.

2013 Champagne year for du Goupil

Due to the long aging period that vintage Champagne typically requires, it's still too early to fully assess the more recent vintages. However, according to Robert Parker, the 2014, 2013, and 2012 vintages have already proven to be excellent.

Champagne du Goupil

In the heart of the Champagne region, in the charming village of Avize in the Côte des Blancs, lies the exclusive Champagne house of du Goupil. Avize is renowned for its chalk-rich soil and ideal location for Chardonnay grapes, the absolute favorite for refined Blanc de Blancs champagnes. The chalky soil provides a mineral-rich foundation that lends the Chardonnay grape a unique freshness and finesse. Champagne du Goupil benefits greatly from these conditions, resulting in a complex and elegant champagne.

Viticulture at Champagne du Goupil: small-scale and handcrafted

Champagne du Goupil distinguishes itself with its limited production and artisanal approach. The production is extremely small-scale, with only 1,024 bottles per vintage, and each stage in the process is performed by hand. This meticulous approach, from grape picking to bottling, contributes to the exclusive and luxurious character of the champagne. Connoisseurs appreciate this approach, as it results in a high-quality and highly sought-after champagne.

The grapes for Champagne du Goupil: exclusively Grand Cru Chardonnay

At Champagne du Goupil, only Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes are used—a deliberate choice for quality and finesse. The grapes are sourced from the finest vineyards in Avize, giving the champagne an exceptional flavor profile. The Chardonnay grape is known for its freshness and elegant taste, which is further refined at du Goupil by allowing 40% of the wine to age in oak barrels. This aging process imparts a rich and full character, with a subtle oak note that enhances the champagne's complexity and depth.

The climate in the Champagne region is ideal for developing complex and refined flavors in the grapes. The relatively cool summers and mild winters allow for slow ripening, resulting in a perfectly balanced acidity and depth in the grapes. This unique climate contributes to the finesse and freshness of du Goupil Champagnes, which are known for their complex and elegant character.

The aging potential of Champagne du Goupil

Champagne du Goupil is characterized by its long aging process and excellent aging potential. The champagne matures for ten years before it reaches the market, with part of it aged in oak barrels, contributing to the development of rich and complex aromas. This aging ensures that the champagne, once bottled, retains its quality for many years and can even further develop with time. For enthusiasts of exclusive and high-quality champagnes, Champagne du Goupil offers a unique aging experience.
