Description
History of Gaja and the Ca'Marcanda location
Founded in 1859 in Piedmont, Gaja became one of Italy's most renowned wineries. Under the leadership of Angelo Gaja, the company became known for its innovative approach and international focus. In 1996, the Gaja family expanded into Tuscany with the establishment of the Ca'Marcanda project in Bolgheri. This region offers ideal conditions for international grape varieties thanks to its warm climate, sea breezes, and limestone, clay, and sandy soils. Ca'Marcanda literally means "the house of endless negotiations," referring to the years of discussions required to acquire the estate.
About the 2012 Gaja Ca'Marcanda Magari Magnum
The 2012 Magari is a prestigious Super Tuscan blend from Bolgheri, bottled in a 1.5-liter magnum. This wine combines power and elegance with impressive concentration. Magari means "perhaps" in Italian, a reference to hope and desire. The wine is the result of careful selection of grape varieties and plots, with a clear focus on finesse and balance. In magnum form, this wine matures even more slowly and develops even more complex aromas.
Grapes, harvest and vinification of the 2012 Magari
The 2012 Magari is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Each grape variety is harvested and vinified separately to preserve its individual character. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, some new and some used. The wine then undergoes a further few months of bottle aging before release. The result is a structured yet supple wine with aging potential.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2012 Magari
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. The bouquet opens with aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and cassis, complemented by notes of graphite, bay leaf, tobacco, and a hint of mocha. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, with well-integrated tannins and fresh acidity that provide balance. The long finish reveals nuances of spice, dark chocolate, and mineral notes. The wine is powerful yet retains its elegance and refinement. This is a magnum edition in OWC/1 – even more delicious, festive, and with a longer drinking window.

Upped to a Bolgheri status (previously this wine was identified as a Toscana IGT), the 2012 Bolgheri Magari is simply delightful. This vintage shows extra heft and dimension that allows the wine to spread smoothly over the palate. Merlot is blended with Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon, and the taste profile in the 2012 vintage definitely favors the Merlot component. Soft cherry and dark berry segue to spice and moist tobacco. The structure of the two Cabernet varieties shows in the mouth where the wine is elegant and tight. It needs more time for bottle evolution.
Angelo Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda estate has hit its stride with this latest set of wines. His management of the 2011 heat is impressive, resulting in wines with power and finesse. Ca’Marcanda never seems to get the attention it deserves, and the wines are indeed pricy. Nonetheless, they are among the finest expressions on the Tuscan coast.

The history of winery Gaja starts in 1859, the year in which Giovanni Gaja, a local grape grower in Barbaresco, Piemonte, founded a wine company under his own name. A generation later, it is Angelo, grandfather of the current owner, who continues to make wine with the same determination as his father. He is supported in this by Clotilde Rey with whom he marries in 1905. They teach their scion Giovanni named after his grandfather so that as a winemaker you should not make any concessions; nothing should be at the expense of the quality of the wine.
In 1961 Giovannis son Angelo works in the family business. After graduating as an economist from the University of Turin and graduating from the School of Viticulture & Oenology in Alba, the young Angelo left abroad for an internship at wine farms in Bordeaux, Burgundy, along the Rin and in California. Full of fresh ideas, he had now returned to his native Piemonte. When Angelo Gaja took over his parents' company in 1970, he asked his old classmate and winemaker Guido Rivella to assist him. Together they implement a number of revolutionary changes for the region. For example, they sometimes reduce yields per hectare by up to half the number of liters allowed, they experiment with vinification methods, the planting of new - both red and white - grape varieties and pioneering ripening techniques. The results are astonishing and Gaja conquers the world with his beautiful Barbaresco's - the company's flagship.
The nebbiolo grapes for the Barbaresco of Gaja traditionally came from different vineyards. Angelos' father, grandfather and his father did just that before. Although young Angelo would not end this tradition, he launched a new line of Barbaresco's from a single vineyard. Interest in these experimental single vinyard wines became more and more popular. As a proponent of a dynamic, purely quality-oriented wine culture, the brilliant winemaker decides from 1996 to completely break with what he considers to be a conservative and restrictive Italian designation of origin. Only his traditional Barbaresco is still on the market as a prestigious DOCG. He deliberately 'declassifies' all other red single vineyard wines into regional Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. These are the Sorì San Lorenzo, the Sorì Tildìn and the Costa Russi. Gajas Barolo Sperss also underwent the same name change. With the exception of the Dagromis Barolo DOCG, Sito Moresco and Conteisa de Langhe also bear DOC. Langhe DOC is also on the label of his white toppers from Piemonte, the Rossj-Bass, Alteni di Brassica and Gaia & Rey. After all, for Gaja the abbreviation does not guarantee good quality of a wine but the name of the producer.
