Description
Maison Boizel is one of the few major Champagne houses that is still a family business, now run by the 5th generation. The house is located on Avenue de Champagne in Épernay. Joyau is the top cuvée and made in Extra Brut style from 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. A strict selection is used for the wine from the villages of Mailly, Cumières and Chigny les Roses (all three for Pinot Noir) and Avize, Chouilly and Vertus (for Chardonnay). 2008 is known as a top vintage in Champagne. The wine has matured for 14 years in the yeast cells before disgorgement.
This beautiful champagne is only distributed via Place du Bordeaux where we can buy as an official wine merchant, so it comes directly from the wine estate. 94 Anson / 94 Decanter / 96 James Suckling

Open and flamboyant with fabulous intensity and perfumes of flowers and light strawberries as well as sweet pastry. Medium body with bright acidity and fine phenolics. Super length. Pastry dough with some white pepper and sandalwood. March 2024 release. Drink or hold.

Jane Anson: 94
" Opens with a curl of smoked citrus, flaky pastry, pink grapefruit and toast. Plenty of character of a vintage Champagne as it gathers tertiary character, retaining a green apple kick of fresh acidity. 3g/l resisidual sugar, 10 years of ageing. Grapes from Premiers and Grands Crus villages of Mailly, Cumières, Chigny-les-Roses, Avize, Chouilly and Vertus. Florent Roques-Boizel director, 10% vinified in oak barrels. A complicated, slow-ripening vintage that finished well, and this has good ageing potential, although not quite at the heights of the exceptional 2008 Joyau."
Decanter: 95
"Crystalline and pure, buttery brioche and soft honeyed notes on the nose with some autolytic characters, yeast and truffle - pain perdu, cinnamon, ginger and toasted almonds. Youthful and buzzy, more so on the palate than the nose suggests, this shines in the glass, it has enough texture to give body and fullness, enough sweetness to give appeal and enough dryness to be great for aperitifs or food. Lemon, lime, pear and peach tones, with some caramel and overt wood in the background suggesting this has at least 10 years ahead of it. Lots of energy and intensity. Quite a serious take but very compelling. Crunchy ending with ginger spice and lemon pith. Dosage 8g/l." - Georgina Hindle
