CELLAR TREASURES - These are wines that come from private cellars of well-known customers of ours. These are often iconic wines. The certainty we have here is that the wine has been stored in a (conditioned) cellar and is now physically in our conditioned Warehouse. Wine is a natural product and how the wine has developed over the years is unknown. We always take 360 degree photos of these wines so that you can inspect the condition of the bottle, label and also the filling. Feel free to come by if you want to inspect the bottle yourself. In many cases you can be very seriously surprised, but it can also be certain that the wine has had its best time or has already strayed further. These wines are ideal for collecting purposes or a special vertical tasting.
The history of Kopke and its unique position in the Douro
Kopke was founded in 1638 by the German merchant Nicolau Kopké, making it the oldest port house in the world. Over the centuries, Kopke has grown into a respected name in the port world, best known for its Colheita and Vintage Ports. Since 1922, the house has owned Quinta de São Luiz, an "A"-classified vineyard in the Douro, where most of the production takes place. The winery is part of the renowned Sogevinus Fine Wines.
Douro Valley: Climate, Location and Grape Varieties
The Douro region in northern Portugal is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is known for its steep river terraces, with schist and granite soils. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. These conditions produce intense and concentrated grapes. The main grape varieties for Port are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. These varieties are often harvested by hand on the steep slopes.
Production of the 1994 Kopke Vintage Port
The 1994 vintage is recognized as one of the best years of the twentieth century for Port wines. The grapes for this wine were harvested by hand, carefully selected and fermented in traditional lagares. During fermentation, fermentation was stopped by adding wine alcohol (aguardente), resulting in a fortified wine with an alcohol content of approximately 20%. The wine was aged in wooden barrels for approximately two years before being bottled for further bottle aging.
Tasting notes of the 1994 Kopke Vintage Port
The wine has a deep ruby red colour with a light mahogany edge. The nose presents complex aromas of ripe blackcurrant, plum jam, eucalyptus, wet earth and toast. The palate is powerful and layered, with notes of dark chocolate, caramel and candied black fruit. The structure is firm but refined, with well-integrated tannins and a long, elegant finish.

Wine and food pairings with 1994 Kopke Vintage Port
Blue cheese: The salty, tangy flavour of cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort provides a wonderful contrast to the sweetness and fruitiness of port.
Dark Chocolate: The bitterness of dark chocolate enhances the rich caramel and berry notes in the wine.
Braised Beef: Slow-cooked beef has deep umami flavours that pair beautifully with the port's powerful structure.
Dried fruit: Figs and dates pair well with the concentrated and candied flavors of the wine.
Toasted Nuts: The earthy, oily texture of walnuts and almonds harmonizes with the nutty undertones of the Port.

Kopke is the world's oldest port house. This port house was founded in 1638 by Cristiano Köpke. This port house specializes in Tawny port and in particular the old Tawny port (the so-called Colheitas). The Colheita port is lighter than a Vintage port and fits many more occasions and meals than a Vintage port. A Colheita is characterized by the brown / almond color, the smell of roasted nuts, raisins and dried fruit. The older the Colheita, the more complex it becomes. 80% of the port made at Kopke is Tawny port. This port house has Tawny port of more than 100 years old.
Quinta de São Luiz is part of Kopke. They saw great potential in the terroir and the ancient vineyards. São Luiz is located in the heart of the Douro region on the left bank of the river between Régua and Pinhão. Due to the construction of the Bagaúste dam in the 1970s, the water level rose to such an extent that Quinta de São Luiz lost part of the land. To solve this, they bought several Quintas in the region to continue their dream. All with A status and ranging in age from 1972 to 1987. São Luiz currently manages 125 hectares of vineyards. The combination of state-of-the-art technology in the winery and the availability of its own vineyards guarantees beautiful wines.
