History of Château Kirwan in Margaux
Château Kirwan is a Grand Cru Classé estate recognized in 1855 by the renowned Bordeaux classification. The estate has a rich history dating back to the 18th century, when it achieved international fame under the leadership of Scottish merchant Mark Kirwan. Today, the château is owned by the Schÿler family, who, with a respect for tradition and modern precision, have consistently elevated Kirwan's quality to a higher level.
The terroir of Margaux and grape varieties
Château Kirwan's vineyards are located in the heart of the Margaux region and cover approximately 37 hectares. The terroir consists primarily of gravelly soils with interspersed clay and sand. This soil structure ensures excellent drainage and gives the wines elegance and aromatic refinement. The vines consist of approximately 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot, a blend typical of the Margaux appellation.
The 2010 vintage: power and elegance
2010 is considered one of the most legendary Bordeaux vintages of recent decades. The growing season featured a dry, sunny summer with cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen perfectly while retaining freshness and structure. For Château Kirwan, this resulted in a wine with deep concentration, impressive balance, and excellent aging potential. It's a wine that harmoniously combines the power of Cabernet Sauvignon and the roundness of Merlot.
Vinification and maturation
The harvest was entirely hand-harvested, after which the grapes were rigorously selected. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, individually plot-by-plot to preserve the nuances of the terroir. Maturation lasted approximately 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques, approximately 50% of which were new. This process gives the wine its layering, structure, and refined oak notes.
Tasting notes of the 2010 Château Kirwan
Colour: Dark ruby red with deep concentration and subtle rim development.
Nose: Complex aromas of cassis, black cherries, plums, violets and hints of tobacco, graphite and cedarwood.
Palate: Powerful yet elegant, with firm yet ripe tannins. The mid-palate offers layers of dark fruit, spice, and a subtle minerality. The long finish reveals finesse and promises many years of further development.
The wine has been exceptionally highly regarded by international critics, with scores well above 94 points. James Suckling praised its depth and structure, while Wine Advocate lauded its precision and elegance. The 2010 Kirwan ranks among the absolute top Grand Cru Classés this year.
Why this wine is interesting for sommeliers, enthusiasts and investors
For sommeliers, the 2010 Château Kirwan is a perfect wine to showcase the power and finesse of Margaux in a great vintage. For wine lovers, it's an immediately impressive bottle that, with patience, will reveal even greater complexity. For investors, it's a reliable choice, thanks to its high ratings, proven aging potential, and the reputation of both the château and the vintage.
A wine older than 15 years
Since the 2010 vintage is now over 15 years old, it's a thrilling experience to taste how the wine has evolved. Each bottle tells its own story: some still show plenty of power, while others already present a more harmonious and mature style. It's precisely this evolution that makes opening a bottle special for the true wine lover.

From: 2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)
The 2014 Rauzan-Ségla is just as impeccable from bottle as it was from barrel. Silky, perfumed and nuanced in the glass, the wine exudes finesse. Expressive floral notes, spice and succulent red/purplish stone fruits are all beautifully delineated. In 2014, Rauzan-Ségla is a wine of understated class with the potential to improve for several decades. Tasted two times.
- By Antonio Galloni on February 2017
Longtime estate manager John Kolasa went out on a high note with his 2014s, the last vintage he made before retiring. Rauzan-Ségla epitomizes understated class, which is precisely what comes through in the 2014.

From: 2014 Bordeaux: It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over (Apr 2015)
The 2014 Rauzan-Ségla is shaping up to be a real jewel of a wine. Super-polished and silky throughout, the 2014 is all about nuance. Red cherry, red currant and mint open up in a translucent, beautifully delineated wine. Ferrous and savory notes follow as the wine blossoms in the glass, revealing its depth and resonance. All the elements fall into place in a gracious wine that is at once classically austere, yet also supple and highly expressive, with virtually no sensation of tannin and terrific overall balance. Tasted twice.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2015
It's hard to believe John Kolasa, a Bordeaux veteran and Rauzan-Ségla's Estate Manager, will be retiring later this year. Kolasa will go out on a high note, as the wines from Rauzan-Ségla and Canon are both superb in 2014. Nicolas Audebert, formerly of Cheval des Andes, the Argentinian joint venture of Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes, is working alongside Kolasa as the transition to the next generation is already under way.
