Description
The former owner and namesake Louis Gaspard d'Estournel was known as the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe. He decorated the castle in Indian style, gave grand parties and lived beyond his means. In 1852 he was completely destitute and had to sell his domain. He died a year later. Cos d'Estournel is perhaps the Chateau with the most new and advanced technique for making wine. From the harvest to the maturing of the bottles, everything is carefully monitored and carried out with the greatest care. For example, they have managed to create a vinification process in which the wine is transported without pumps. All operations are carried out by gravity. In 1855, the Chateau obtained the 2nd Grand Cru Classé status
Ratings: 99+ Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 99 RobertParker.com, 98 James Suckling, 98 Jeb Dunnuck, 97 Wine Spectator
Cos d'Estournel introduces a series of collector's boxes that are released as an annual rendezvous. Each box contains a vintage that has just reached the beginning of its best time to be enjoyed. This is the case of Cos d'Estournel 2010, which has reached a beautiful age, the first ideal moment for consumption. Excellent conservation with fourteen years of bottle aging at the château. The Anniversary box contains 3 bottles of Cos D'Estournel 2010
The box is made from Paulownia, an environmentally friendly tree that absorbs ten times more carbon dioxide than traditional varieties and produces four times more oxygen.
• “Pure and precise wine with so much class. 98 points” – James Suckling
• “a wine of 50, 60, if not 75+ years. 98 points” – Jeb Dunnuck, May 2023
• “a rich, full-bodied behemoth, delivering a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness to support the taut, muscular fruit, with a long finish and minerality. 99+” – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, March 2024

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Cos d'Estournel unfurls slowly, measuredly, releasing delicate notes of dried mulberries, stewed plums and blackcurrant pastilles before giving way to notions of potpourri, black cherry compote and chocolate box plus touches of dried sage, tobacco and new leather. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid foundation of very firm, grainy tannins and very lively acidity supporting the remarkable intensity of tightly wound fruit layers, finishing very long and fragrant. Give it another 4-5 years in bottle and this will be stunning!

There’s clarity and beauty to this wine as always with pure dark berry, stones and spices. Some clove too. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a long finish. Pure and precise wine with so much class. Try in 2020.

From: Cellar Favorite: 2009 & 2010 Cos d’Estournel (Feb 2025)
The 2010 Cos d'Estournel is cut from a different cloth to the previous vintage. This is much fresher on the nose and crucially displays more typicité, yet it delivers just as much punch as the 2009. Black fruit commingles with melted tar and smoke. A sprig of wild mint surfaces with continued aeration. The palate possesses immense gravitas and dimension, analogous to a magnificent suspension bridge. It is less ostentatious than the 2009, with firmer grip and greater control and sapidity on the finish. Whilst I can understand some might prefer the 2009, the 2010 Cos d'Estournel is just more...Cos d'Estournel, though be warned, it would still benefit from a couple more years in bottle. Magnificent.

From: Fairest of Them All: Cos d’Estournel 1928 – 2015 (Oct 2018)
The 2010 Cos d’Estournel has long been my preference over the 2009. That vintage kowtowed to the crowd and yes, to critics. The 2010 is less compromising but more intellectual. It has a scintillating, pixelated bouquet with intense black fruit, asphalt and mint aromas – vivid and bright, much more focused and certainly less flamboyant than the 2009. The palate is medium-bodied with a huge chassis; a Saint-Estèphe clearly built for the long-term with enormous grip and enthralling tension. As before, there is a liberal sprinkling of white pepper towards the finish and is exceptionally long. The 2010 is the finest Cos d’Estournel until the more finessed 2016 comes along. It is a deeply impressive wine but it will appeal more to those that prefer classic Bordeaux to one boasting tons of fruit, as pleasurable as that might be. Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel vertical in London.
