Description
Louis Roederer's Cristal champagne is the exceptionally exclusive champagne produced only in the very best years. Once specially made for the Russian Tsar's Court, it is now prized by connoisseurs worldwide. Unfortunately, it is extremely scarce.
The 2008 Louis Roederer Cristal is a 60/40 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from 36 parcels in seven grands crus: Verzy, Verzenay, Beaumont, and Aÿ for the Pinot Noir, and Mesnil, Avize, and Cramant for the Chardonnay. Twenty-five percent of the wine was fermented in oak, and 16% underwent malolactic fermentation to moderate the crisp acidity of the 2008 vintage. The blend was bottled in May 2009. After 8.5 years on second lees (longer than any other Cristal), the first release was disgorged in September 2017 at a relatively low dosage of 7.5 grams per liter.

Disgorged in September 2017 with 7.5 grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Cristal was produced from 37 of the 45 parcels that are candidates for inclusion in this cuvée—some 40% of which were farmed organically back in 2008—and it's a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. The finest young Cristal in decades, the wine wafts from the glass with a pure and vibrant bouquet of crisp orchard fruit, clear honey, warm brioche, citrus zest and white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, intense and incisive, with superb concentration, racy acids and a long, searingly chalky finish. Pristinely balanced, there are some 500,000 bottles of this legend-in-the-making.

Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal 2008
Friday, Jul 21, 2023
Color : Sparkling
Country : France
Region : Champagne
Vintage : 2008
One of the masterpieces of this exceptional vintage (the last that was this cool). Ravishing nose of Amalfi lemon and white peach with hints of white chocolate, chamomile and oyster shell. Super-elegant and tightly structured with a hint of creaminess on the mid-palate adding tension. Very long steely finish carried by the linear mineral acidity. A cuvée of 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, part of which (unusually for Cristal) underwent malolactic fermentation. Getting very scarce on the secondary market, partly because of the great aging potential! Tasted at the Cristal vertical tasting at the champagne house on July 6th, 2023.

From: Roederer Cristal Full Circle: 1993-2015 (Dec 2023)
The 2008 Cristal is just starting to open and into its first plateau of what is likely to be a very long drinking window. Bright and intensely saline, with terrific depth, Cristal shows everything that makes this vintage so appealing, namely a captivating mix of fruit intensity and bright, piercing acids. As alluring as the 2008 is today, it also needs time to be at its very best. Roederer launched the more open 2009 ahead of the 2008, which means the 2008 saw ten years on the lees, quite a bit longer than most vintages, all of which it needed. The 2008 seems to presage a new era at Roederer in which the wines have been consistently brilliant. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged: 2018

Louis Roederer is a prestigious champagne producer based in the Champagne region of France. The House of Louis Roederer is known for its commitment to quality, traditional winemaking methods and its signature cuvée, Cristal.
History of Louis Roederer
Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 by a German wine merchant named Louis Roederer. The house started as a wine shop and became involved in the production of Champagne in the early 19th century. In 1827, Louis Roederer's cousin, Adolphe Roederer, took over the business. Adolphe played a crucial role in the expansion and growth of this producer. He traveled extensively to build relationships with European courts, including the Russian Imperial Court. In 1876, Louis Roederer created the iconic Cristal Champagne. It was originally produced exclusively for the Russian Tsars and was presented in a crystal clear bottle, which is the origin of the name 'Cristal'. Louis Roederer remained a family business for many years. However, in 1932 the Rouzaud family, relatives of the Roederer family, took over the house. The Rouzaud family owns and manages Louis Roederer to this day. Like many companies in Champagne, Louis Roederer faced challenges during the World Wars, including damage to their cellars. Despite these difficulties, they persevered and continued to produce exceptional champagne. Louis Roederer has a long history of producing high quality champagnes. They are known for their traditional winemaking methods, including hand harvesting, fermentation in oak barrels and long-term aging in cellars.
Cristal
One of the most famous Champagnes produced by Louis Roederer is Cristal. Created in 1876, Cristal is a prestigious and luxurious cuvée originally produced for the Russian Tsars. It is typically a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes with Chardonnay as the dominant grape variety. They are known for their exceptional quality, elegance and aging potential. It is known for its fine, persistent bubbles, a rich and creamy texture and a harmonious balance of flavors and aromas. Cristal is highly regarded by wine critics and collectors worldwide. It consistently receives high ratings and is considered one of the best Champagnes available. Bottles of Cristal are often collected and aged for special occasions. The clear crystal bottle in which Cristal was originally presented was changed to a conventional bottle design in the early 20th century. This change was made to protect the taste and quality of the wine, as the clear glass was found to be sensitive to light exposure. Today, Cristal is usually bottled in an elegant, clear glass bottle with gold packaging.
Louis Roederer's vineyards
Louis Roederer owns and manages vineyards in the best Champagne crus, including the Grand Cru vineyards of Verzenay, Verzy and Ay, among others. These vineyards supply the grapes for their exceptional wines.
