Description
2000 Château Prieuré-Lichine Margaux Grand Cru Classé
According to Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate, the 2000 Prieuré-Lichine is one of the château's best vintages in 30 to 40 years, scoring 90 points. This Grand Cru Classé combines rich texture with a refined, medium-to-full body and a beautiful balance of fruit, tannins, and oak. It's a wine that can be enjoyed young or aged slowly.
the Château Prieuré-Lichine winery
Château Prieuré-Lichine, nestled in the heart of the Margaux region, is one of the appellation's renowned Grand Cru Classés. The estate boasts a long history, with a style that prioritizes elegance and accessibility. Prieuré-Lichine strives to create a Margaux that is supple, rich in fruit, and simultaneously possesses structural depth that allows for aging. The château's wines are known for their refined nose and supple, rounded tannins, making them suitable for both immediate consumption and extended aging.
tasting the 2000 Prieuré-Lichine
Upon pouring, the dark ruby red color immediately stands out, with a purple sheen that reveals the wine's concentration. The nose is stunningly rich and complex: black cherry, cassis, tobacco leaf, cocoa, and subtle toasted wood intersperse. The whole is balanced and inviting, without being overly powerful or sharp. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a sweet, rounded attack that transitions into a structured, well-textured mid-palate. The fruitiness remains dominant, with a hint of glycerin adding smoothness. The finish is long, elegant, and harmonious, with subtle woody notes that round it out.
blending and vinification
Prieuré-Lichine uses a classic Margaux blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are hand-selected and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, some new and some second-year. This process ensures that the tannins integrate, the fruit notes are preserved, and the wine develops an elegant structure that can withstand the test of time.
terroir and context
The Prieuré-Lichine terroir consists of a mix of gravel and sand on clay, typical of Margaux, which contributes to the wine's refinement and finesse. The vineyards' positioning ensures optimal drainage and sun exposure, resulting in ripe, healthy grapes with concentrated fruit. This terroir, combined with classic vinification, gives the 2000 Prieuré-Lichine its deep complexity and aging potential.
maturation and storage potential
This vintage is now over 20 years old, making it an exceptional wine. Because wine is a natural product, it's difficult to predict precisely how a bottle will develop. The 2000 Prieuré-Lichine has a beautiful balance and structure that makes it still drinkable, yet allows it to develop further in the bottle. Thanks to its solid foundation, the wine can continue to evolve in the coming years, with the complex fruit notes and subtle oak gradually deepening and harmonizing.
wine and food pairings
With its balance and refined tannins, this Margaux pairs beautifully with roasted red meat, rack of lamb, game dishes, and rich pasta dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. It also complements a cheese board with soft, mature cheeses perfectly. The wine's power and elegance add depth to dishes without overpowering the wine itself.

Undeniably the finest Prieure-Lichine in 30-40 years, this textured, rich, medium to full-bodied 2000 boasts a dark ruby/purple color in addition to a knock-out nose of black cherries, cassis, tobacco leaf, cocoa, and toasty oak in the background. The wine is sweet on the attack, full-bodied, and well-textured, with oodles of fruit and glycerin. This is sexy stuff that can be drunk early, but will age gracefully for 15-16 years. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2026. Bravo!
