The Hidden Cellar is Grand Cru's exclusive wine club concept, specially designed for our most loyal customers. You automatically become a member if you regularly order from Grand Cru. As a Hidden Cellar member, you'll have first access to a selection of exceptionally rare wines: vintages, iconic Bordeaux appellations and Burgundies, Italian Super Tuscans, Napa Valley wines, and rare Champagne. We can offer these gems directly from the wineries at very attractive prices (well below market), often wines that are no longer available or unaffordable. So, the wines come directly from the wineries and haven't traveled halfway around the world in questionable circumstances. Discover all the benefits of this concept on the Hidden Cellar page .

Château du Tertre and its rich history

Château du Tertre has been recognized as a Grand Cru Classé since 1855 and is one of the icons of the Margaux appellation. The estate owes its name to its location on a raised plateau, a "tertre," which has been an ideal place for winegrowing for centuries. The château and its vineyards have had various owners over the centuries, but were thoroughly renovated and modernized starting in the 1990s. This has led to a revival of Du Tertre's reputation, with wines that combine power and finesse and are internationally acclaimed.

The terroir and grapes of Château du Tertre

The estate boasts approximately 50 hectares of vineyards, situated on sandy and gravelly soils that drain excellently. These soils are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which together form the heart of the blend. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are used in smaller quantities to add complexity. The location in Margaux provides a climate with the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean, ensuring a balance between ripe fruit and crisp acidity. This terroir produces wines with elegance, refined tannins, and a distinctive Margaux character.

The 1999 harvest and vinification

The 1999 vintage in Bordeaux experienced a relatively warm summer and a sunny September, allowing the grapes to fully ripen. For Margaux, this resulted in elegant, supple, and accessible wines with an excellent balance between ripe tannins and freshness. Château du Tertre hand-selected the grapes and vinified them in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatic purity. Aging took place in French oak barrels, some of which were new, giving the wine added depth and complexity without overpowering its elegance.

Tasting profile of Château du Tertre 1999

The 1999 Château du Tertre presents itself with a garnet-red color that is still remarkably vibrant. The nose reveals aromas of red berries, cassis, and plums, complemented by tobacco, cedar, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine displays a medium body, silky texture, and rounded tannins typical of the vintage. The palate offers an elegant balance of ripe fruit, floral notes, and a long, harmonious finish. This is a Margaux that combines charm and accessibility with classic finesse.

Storage potential and development

With over 25 years of bottle aging, this 1999 is showing its true beauty. The wine is now ready to drink, offering enthusiasts the chance to experience a mature Margaux in its finest form. At the same time, it's always a treat to see how each bottle develops individually. Some bottles still display fresh fruit notes, while others have developed more tertiary aromas of leather, truffle, and humus. This makes older wines like this particularly exciting to open.
