The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (Auction) is very clear and precise on the nose that shows delicate notes of finely crushed slate and candied lemon rind notes. Very filigreed yet also lush and generous on the palate, this is a weightless, highly finessed and elegant, savory and sustainably structured wine with generous and dense, very persistent and stimulating fruit with lychee flavors and a long, highly stimulating, saline and crystalline finish. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 17 24 in January 2025.
At the renowned winery in Wehlen in January, I had to taste not only the last but also the penultimate vintage, i.e., 2023 alongside the 2022. I tasted both vintages one after the other, not side by side—the 2023 before lunch, the 2022 afterwards. I don't have a favorite, even though I had thought in advance that the 2023 vintage would have an easy time against its predecessor. But far from it. The hot and dry 2022s at Prüm turned out exceptionally well, and more than once I saw the 2022 ahead of the 2023, but I can't give a plausible reason for this. In any case, Katharina and her team have produced two great collections in two very different and challenging vintages.
The year 2023 began mild and wet. March in particular brought a lot of rain, which continued to a lesser extent into the rather cool April, so the soils were well moistened, quite unlike in 2022, when it was already too dry at this point. Budding did not begin until the end of April. The mild May and hot June were rather dry months. These conditions accelerated the growth of the buds and flowering. In July, there was more rain; and temperatures rose to 35 degrees Celsius at times, but there was also a cooler period with temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius. August was similar, with even more rain and fewer warm days. In September, temperatures barely dropped and averaged 3.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average. The harvest began very early on September 18 and ended on October 11. “As the temperatures remained warm in October and ripening progressed quickly, we made sure to complete the harvest as quickly as possible,” reports Katharina Prüm.
Prüm was able to harvest all grades from Kabinett to Beerenauslese, with the main focus on Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese. The beautiful botrytis can be found again in a range from golden capsules to Beerenauslese. Overall, the wines of the 2023 vintage are classic in style: pure, clear, filigreed and fresh, with fine fruit ripeness, weightless elegance and stimulating crystalline acidity.
The year 2022 was one of the warmest and driest since records began and was characterized by unusually low rainfall between March and early September. This year also started with quite mild temperatures. While January was characterized by a lot of precipitation (63% above average), February already brought exceptionally mild temperatures. From March to April, temperatures returned to normal, although these months were already unusually dry.
Budding took place in the second half of April. May and June continued to be dry and very warm. Flowering took place early at the beginning of June. The weather conditions then became more extreme in July. It became significantly warmer and, above all, very dry. There were only two millimeters of precipitation in the entire month! “While temperatures normally start to drop in August, this was not the case in 2022,” says Prüm. “August was the warmest month of all.” Half of the month was over 30 degrees Celsius. Even though there was significantly more rain than in July, it remained very dry. It was not until September that the weather changed. The temperatures dropped and it started to rain—a great relief for nature in general. And according to Prüm, the rain did not harm the grapes.
The harvest began on September 19 and ended on October 22. Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese could be produced. And although it was not a vintage characterized by botrytis, Prüm was able to sort two gold capsules, in the Bernkasteler Lay and in the Graacher Himmelreich. There is a Lange Goldkapsel from the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr.
Prüm's 2022s are surprisingly clear, taut and elegant and are not inferior to the 2023s in terms of quality, especially not the Spätlese and Auslese wines. This is possibly because Prüm carried out an extensive green harvest in the summer to relieve and preserve the vines and improve the quality of the grapes.

Creamy and dreamy, with white peach, honeysuckle and pomelo aromas plus minty freshness. Really succulent, but every bit as animating on the medium-bodied palate. Then the vibrant acidity wipes up the natural grape sweetness in the finish with great alacrity and creates wonderful tension with the whole basket of fruit flavors. Drink or hold.

From: 2024 Mosel, Saar and Ruwer: Tales of Woe and Wow (Oct 2025)
The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is a total tease. Aromatic citrus shimmers on the nose, uniting grapefruit, tangerine and bergamot scents. Citrus foliage adds an extra frisson of freshness. The palate homes in on that line between tartness and the ripe aroma that you find only in the most exquisite citrus fruits. The 2024 has an allure and fusion of impressions that is inextricable and therefore beguiling. It is simply wonderful, fresh, light and so elegant. (Medium)

Dr. Katharina Prüm reported only marginal frost damage in Graach and Bernkastel, with Wehlen and Zeltingen spared completely. However, hail hit sites in Graach and Bernkastel, which meant limited quantities from these sites. The wet spring brought almost twice the average precipitation, a boon for the well-drained slopes. Apart from a few hot days in August, there were no extreme temperatures in the summer. Harvest took place between October 1 and 31, with a short break for rain. After the rain, Prüm was able to pick some Auslesen and Auslesen Goldkapsel. “We selected a lot and visited many parcels often due to relatively uneven ripeness within the same vine. We kept checking and picking what was right, so it turned into a laborious harvest,” she said. There is no Kabinett from the Badstube in 2024, due to frost and hail. The wines are a stunning collection of real thrill—wonderfully classic and so expressive.
