Pai betekent vader in het Galicisch. De Albamar Pai is geproduceerd in de stijl van de wijnen van weleer. De jonge zéér getalenteerde Xurxo Alba maakt verschillende witte wijnen op basis van de typische druivensoort Albariño en deze PAI is een mix van verschillende selecties in de wijngaarden en vinifieert de opbrengsten apart, sommige met malolactische en andere zonder, allemaal komende van 2.500 liter eiken foudres Prachtige mineraliteit in alle wijnen dankzij de terroir van leisteen en kalk. Fraîcheur en puurheid gaan hand in hand, magnifiek. Van deze PAI zijn maar rond de 6.500 flessen geproduceerd. De PAI is een prachtige Albariño expressie, mineraliteit en diepgang die met wat veroudering nog fraaier worden.
Albamar is een familiewijnmakerij die ongeveer 25 jaar geleden zijn reis begon. Albamar hecht veel waarde aan de verzorging van de wijngaarden en de productie van Albariño-wijnen met een uniek karakter en een speciale persoonlijkheid. In het jaar 2006 nam één van de kinderen van het gezin de teugels van het wijnhuis; Xurxo Alba Padín wijdde lichaam en geest aan de wijnbouw. Vanaf dit moment wordt het bedrijf gedoopt met de naam Bodegas Albamar, dit is een fusie van de familienaam en de nabijheid van zijn wijngaarden met de zee, en wordt het op zijn beurt geïntegreerd in de Rías Baixas.

The impressive 2018 Pepe Luis comes from grapes from five small plots from a grower. This is very balsamic, the most balsamic of the vintages produced until now... In 2018, it started fermenting in stainless steel and finished in a 2,500-liter oak foudre, where it matured with lees for almost one year. Without going through malolactic, it was not racked after it finished fermenting, but it was sulfured and that prevented malolactic. There are notes of bay leaf, almost eucalyptus—the vines are surrounded by eucalyptus trees, next to the sea, and the wine now has those notes. There is no oak, the foudre was third use and didn't seem to mark the wine. 3,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019.
At Albamar, they continue working in the same direction as before, but they are now planting more grapes to reduce the need to purchase them. Xurxo Alba Padín has planted one hectare of Albariño and has just purchased some more land (very expensive in a tourist area!) for future plantings. He wants to plant some more Caíño and Espadeiro. He's planting "parra" style, the traditional way instead of trellised, because he gets half a degree less alcohol and up to one gram more sugar. As for the wines, after a trip to Jura, he experimented with some skin-contact Albariño (and even some flor!), and that might be something that generates something new.
When talking about vintages, 2017 is a personal favorite of Xurxo, he likes it more than 2016, 2018 and 2019. He thinks 2015 is the best vintage, but he likes 2017 more. His wines have less alcohol, with very good freshness and a lighter structure; he thinks this might be due to the lower yields, with contained alcohol and good acidity. In 2018, he sees similarities with 2017, but there's more structure and volume, more ripeness, a little warmer for him. And he links 2019 to 2016, a little fresher but with lots of structure. The 2019s are quite approachable, as was the case with the 2016s, but the 2016s are evolving better than expected. I had a number of different vintages to taste, as some of the 2018s are not yet bottled, and the entry-level 2019 is already in the market.
