Schloss Johannisberg heeft zijn wijngaarden in de prachtige Rheingau. Over het algemeen zijn de wijnen uit de Rheingau nog wat verfijnder en met karaktert en steviger, van smaak dan de wijnen uit Rheinhessen en Rheinpfalz. Een van de mooiste wijnhuizen uit de Rheingau is zonder twijfel Schloss Johannisberg. Schloss Johannisberg in de Rheingau is ongetwijfeld Duitslands meest prestigieuze wijngoed en de wereld vermaard om zijn Rieslings. Het is het oudste Riesling wijngoed ter wereld. Er wordt sinds 817 gemaakt en sinds 1720 wordt er voor 100% Riesling geproduceerd. Het wijngoed ligt centraal in het gebied en kent een rijke historie. Oorspronkelijk was het een klooster dat later als kasteel in gebruik werd genomen. Het is zelfs ooit in het bezit geweest van ons vorstenhuis. De wijnen zijn de meest elegante van het Rheingau gebied en winnen aan balans en soepelheid naarmate ze ouderen. In de schitterende wijnkelder heeft men sinds 1748 steeds enkele flessen bewaard, zodat er nu een unieke verzameling is aangelegd. Eens per 25 jaar worden de wijnen gekeurd en voorzien van nieuwe kurken. En, zo wordt er verzekerd, zelfs de oudste witte wijnen zijn nog zeer goed drinkbaar!
De 2023 Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Orangelack Kabinett is een nieuwe wijn voor het landgoed. De riesling druiven werden geplukt in de eerste week van de oogst in het centrale deel van de Johannisberg. Als een punt van verschil met de Rotlack Kabinett, werd deze in zijn geheel geperst in een mandenpers en gefermenteerd in roestvrij staal, en vervolgens zes maanden gerijpt in houten vaten op fijne droesem. Zomerbloesem en zachte mandarijnschil zijn absoluut aromatisch en betoverend in de neus. Pure perzik met omlijst door rijpe citroen - zacht, aromatisch, soepel en zo fris. Een zeer verleidelijke wijn, hij is licht en etherisch, wat leidt tot een lange afdronk. (Off-dry)

The 2019 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Trocken Bronzelack is clear and aromatic on the super ripe and tropical-scented nose with aromas of mango, honeydew melon, a touch of honey, caramelized fruit and the aristocratic mineral tone of the Schloss Johannisberger terroir. Elegant and refined on the palate, this is a round yet quite pure and finessed Riesling with stimulating and lingering salinity on the grippy finish. Tasted in June 2020.
To be or not to be—that shouldn't be the question when it comes to topping the excellent Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Grosses Gewächs Silberlack with a corresponding Goldlack. A wine topping the GG? This isn’t really the idea of the VDP classification, which allows only one dry "grand cru" from each single vineyard. Yet since the Schloss Johannisberger is only one vineyard that is divided into different plots, like the châteaux vineyards in Bordeaux, the domain has produced a wide range of different styles from dry to noble sweet wines for ages. Each style wears its own cap color, and with the GG being introduced with a silver cap years ago, it was clear that a gold cap had to follow. So, here it comes: the yet-to-be-released 2017 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Goldlack is this year’s highlight at Schloss Johannisberg (well, I still need to taste the higher, sweeter predicates from the 2019 vintage...). Vinified in traditional oak for 30 months and bottled in April this year, the 2017 is one of the finest dry Rheingau Rieslings I have tasted this year. It is a structured, multi-layered and tensioned "grand cru" with the estate-typical flintiness, finesse and persistent elegance. The Goldlack is a great new entry into the multicolored Schloss Johannisberger Riesling range and a new icon wine for the entire Rheingau region.
It was Stefan Doktor’s idea to produce a wine more in the old, traditional style of the château, whose historic cellar ("bibliotheca subterranea") is world famous and has hosted countless great Schloss Johannisberger Rieslings for 900 years. In the old days, the Rieslings were aged for more than just a year, depending on the vintage, the style and the quality, before they were bottled or released. Doktor, Lord Of The Keys to the subterranean wine library, wanted to revive this tradition and started a test in 2017. When it came to the blending of the stück vats for the Silberlack Grosses Gewächs, which is a blend of 80% Langenberg and 20% Nonnenhöll and Mäuerchen quer, he decided to keep one 1,200-liter stück for a longer aging. The wine was racked from the full lees in spring like the Silberlack GG (both wines underwent the malolactic fermentation yet not to the end), yet not bottled but aged for another two years in another stück in the bibliotheca subterranea. The wine showed so well in spring this year that was filtered and bottled. It’s not a spectacularly rich or full-bodied wine but, if I may say so, the real grand cru of Schloss Johannisberg. The Goldlack is deeper, more complex and more tensioned than the Grosses Gewächs and comes along like its reserve wine. The 2017 Goldlack sells for 99 euros pre-release right now and should be released in autumn this year for a price that has not yet been fixed. For Rheingau classic aficionados, cellaring at least a few bottles of the 2017 should be obligatory. The wine is spectacular in its tension, finesse and elegant complexity and I can’t imagine 2018 could be better. The Goldlack opens a new chapter in the history of one of Germany’s most famous Riesling domains and will be produced only in outstanding years such as 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The 2021 Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Goldlack is Johannsiberg's wine positioned above the GG. Made in limited quantity, it spent 30 months in wood. The merest touch of beeswax appears initially, almost with a hint of speculoos biscuit spice on the nose. The palate is a marvel, absolutely fluid in texture and slender but with absolute concentration. this has density but no weight. Texturally, this is different from other Rieslings, calmer and quieter, but with no less intent or direction. On the contrary, it conquers quietly but completely. The malolactic fermentation delivers a mellow finish that is deceptive, since the final acidity in this dry wine still reached an exciting 8.2 g/L. (Bone-dry)

Tasting 2023 at Schloss Johannisberg was a highlight of the tour. Stefan Doktor notes, "Two thousand twenty-three was not easy, but just like in sports, you grow with your challenges, and when the going gets tough, those who are best prepared come out on top.” This analogy is apt as Doktor competed and still competes in luge internationally. “Two thousand twenty-three was the opposite of 2022. We had wet weather during harvest, and grapes developed so rapidly that we had an unusually rapid harvest,” he says. “We asked our picking team to arrive on September 18, but some had already arrived on September 11 for pre-harvest preparations, so we plunged straight into harvest on September 12. When the rest of the team arrived, 40% of the grapes were already in the cellar. A week later, 80%.” He notes that they had to select most stringently but brought in “incredibly healthy botrytis” with harvest concluding by the end of September. Fruit, he says, “had high, bold acidity levels in combination with clearly defined aromas.” He compares this element of 2023 to 2010. Doktor presented two new wines in the portfolio and a one-off: a new entry-level dry Riesling called Prince Metternich and a Kabinett called Orangelack to represent a different Kabinett style from the established Rotlack. The one-off is a non-vintage blend made to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of Spätlese discovered here in 1775. Just 1,000 bottles were made. "This is something you can only do once," Stefan Doktor adds, calling this creation Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Ex-Bibliotheca Subterranea Cuvée 100 Spätlese. Doktor has a very clear idea of what he wants to achieve and delivers stunning wines that do justice to Johannisberg’s history and reputation.

Schloss Johannisberg bottelt "Qualitätswein" onder een met een geel zegel gemerkt etiket . De Qualitätsweine mit Prädikat (kwaliteitswijnen met bijzondere eigenschappen) worden als volgt geklasseerd: Rotlach voor de kabinetwijnen van gemiddelde kwaliteit, Orangelach voor de beste kabinetwijnen, Grünlach voor de gemiddelde Spätlesen, Weisslach voor de grote Spätlesen, Rosalach voor de Auslesen, Blaulach voor de beste kwaliteiten Auslese en Goldlach voor de Beeren- en Trockenbeerenauslesen.
