De Guigal Condrieu Doriane is een zeer beperkt leverbare exclusieve wijn. De wijn wordt uitsluitend gevinifieerd in kleine houten vaten, speciaal ontwikkelt voor deze wijn. De Dorina rijpt voor 9 maanden in nieuw frans eiken. E.Guigal 'La Doriana' Condrieu is een 100% viognier-cuvée van meerdere afzonderlijke percelen. De grond van het perceel Côte Chatillon (1 ha) bestaat uit leisteen en kalksteen. Het perceel in Colombier (1 ha) bevat veel graniet en zandsteen. Op het perceel Volan in St Pierre de Boeuf (1 ha) bevat de bodem graniet en ijzeroxide. Voor de jaargang 2014 werden ook druiven van het perceel Coteau de Chéry (0,5 ha) gebruikt. Door de vele verschillende terroirs krijgt de wijn diepgang. De gemiddelde leeftijd van de druiven bedraagt 35 jaar. Deze single grape viognier onderging een malolactische gisting en rijpte vervolgens 8 maanden in nieuwe houten vaten. De wijn ruikt naar witte bloemen en perzik en mandarijn en bittere citrusvruchten. Het smaakpalet is fris, rond, rijk en vol van smaak. De wijn is medium tot full-bodied, zeer zuiver en elegant met een geweldige diepte en levendige zuurgraad. In 1 woord geweldig en altijd hoog in de 90+ punten

Fermented and matured in 100% new oak, the 2022 Condrieu la Doriane is less oaky and spicy than expected, evoking a charming, vibrant bouquet of honeysuckle, ripe orchard fruits and flowers mingled with delicate rose notes. Full-bodied, dense and enveloping, it's layered with a fleshy core of fruit and a sweet, broad mid-palate that leads to a spicy, long and lovely reductive finish. This blend of five different lieux-dits (Cote Chatillon, Chery, Vernon, all in the commune of Condrieu; Volan in the commune of Malleval; and Colombier in the commune of St-Michel-sur-Rhône) will offer a broad drinking window.

While the 2020 Condrieu la Doriane matured entirely in new oak, there's just a hint of toast on the nose. The rest of the bouquet features a kaleidoscopic swirl of floral and spice notes with melon and white peach. Medium to full-bodied, it's exquisitely expansive and silky in texture, yet it remains refreshing on the lengthy, mouthwatering finish.
It was the start of the last full day of my 2021 Rhône trip when I pulled into the parking lot at Guigal around 9:30 a.m. Reminder: Always dress warmly when tasting at Guigal, because the cellars are a few degrees cooler than average! The cool temperatures help inhibit the growth of any spoilage organisms during the extended élevage these wines receive.
While the stars of the cellars are the single-vineyard wines from Côte-Rôtie, the Guigal family takes pride in all of the wines they produce, and one reliable indicator of the quality of a Southern Rhône vintage is the quality and volume produced of the négoce Côtes du Rhône, which is typically around 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre. The 2018 is charming and fruit-forward, while the 2019 looks to be slightly more concentrated. The family's relationships in Gigondas go back before the elevation of that appellation to cru status in 1971, so that is another reliable southern offering from the négociant side of the business.
In the Northern Rhône, the large-scale bottlings from Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie are consistent performers and widely distributed. As they will be many consumers' introduction to these appellations, it's important they remain of high quality, vintage after vintage. The so-called La Las really require no introduction, except to mention that a new La La is being contemplated—a steep, two-hectare parcel within the Fongeant lieu-dit was vinified separately in 2019 and 2020. I was able to taste some impressive barrel samples, but as those wines will not be bottled separately, I've not scored them or added them to the database. Philippe Guigal was hopeful that the new wine—tentatively named La Renarde—would be ready to make a formal debut beginning with the 2022 vintage.
Value-oriented consumers who still want a taste of Northern Rhône Syrah will want to focus on the family's négoce bottlings from Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. While the Crozes is normally a fruit-forward, easy-drinking wine, the 2019 version boasts a bit more concentration than usual, while the 2018 and 2019 St-Joes both deliver ripe fruit and hints of granitic austerity. The Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph and Vignes de l'Hospice bottlings ratchet up the intensity of both oak and terroir, but prices for those are rising rapidly, as consumers have caught on to the value they represent.
As a side note, my tastings at Guigal's cellars in Ampuis included wines from the family's estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Nalys, but I've chosen to include those reviews in my Southern Rhône coverage, slated to appear in the next few weeks.

The coffee bean note from new oak is quite prominent in the first moment, but there's also a stack of apricots and ripe melon there. Rich, full-bodied and concentrated, with a wonderful silkiness on the expansive palate. The finish is very long with notes of vanilla, coffee and hot stones. Drink from release.

Matured for 9 months in 100% new French oak, the 2023 Condrieu La Doriane takes off with toasty subtleties, mingling pristine white peach, apricot and jasmine with a touch of honeysuckle. Packing elevated flavor concentration on the dense palate, the 2023 is an outgoing, articulate La Doriane. Round and complex, it walks off the stage with a touch of lemon flesh and wet stone on the long, nuanced finish.

Philippe Guigal and his team remain at the top of their game. The 2020 Côte-Rôtie trio of La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne is flat-out stunning. Concentrated, complex and precise, yet totally fragrant, energetic and balanced, all three make it all seem so effortless. While the 2021 and 2022 La-La-La-La’s (don’t forget the new La Reynarde) remain in barrel, I got a chance to check in on the 2023s. Showing more initial ripeness than 2021 yet a little less flavor concentration and boldness than the 2022s, the 2023s are developing their own distinctive personality, and I’ll be delighted to watch them grow. I was also curious about how the 2021 Château d'Ampuis would perform, given its awkward showing from barrel last year. Now in bottle, it has come together nicely, showcasing a cooler-vintage-style restraint that’s going to be cherished by collectors when compared to surrounding vintages. Other highlights from this broad tasting include the expressive 2023 Condrieu La Doriane as well as the stellar 2020 Ermitage Ex-Voto. Before leaving, I also caught up with the now 81-year-old Marcel Guigal. Charming and polite as ever, I was glad to see him doing well.

Maison E.Guigal is een wijngoed met een grote reputatie. Het bedrijf werd in 1946 opgericht en is nu drie generaties oud. Oprichter Etienne Guigal bepaalde sterk de huidige identiteit van deze producent. Voordat hij zijn eigen wijngoed oprichtte verzamelde hij zijn eerste ervaringen bij de producent Vidal-Fleury. Inmiddels hebben Marcel Guigal en zijn zoon Philippe de leiding over het bedrijf. De laatste is verantwoordelijk voor de wijnbereiding en treedt daarmee in de voetsporen van zijn grootvader, die maar liefst 67 wijnoogsten meemaakte.
Guigal is gevestigd in Ampuis, een kleine 38 km ten zuiden van Lyon. Hier beschikt het over 60 ha grond in de appellations Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Châteauneuf du Pape, Tavel en Gigondas. De Guigals zijn inmiddels ook de eigenaren van Domaine de Bonserine en Vidal Fleury. Sinds 1995 beheert Guigal het bedrijf vanuit het beroemde Château d’Ampuis. Dit kasteel stamt uit de 12e eeuw en werd in de 16e eeuw in renaissancestijl herbouwd.
Het wijnmagazine Decanter riep Marcel Guigal in 2006 uit tot “Man of the year.” De gerenommeerde wijngids Guide Hachette doet er nog een schepje bovenop en noemt Guigal “de beste wijnmaker ter wereld.” Ook Robert Parker heeft diep respect voor Guigal. Met regelmaat krijgen de topwijnen van deze producent van hem de hoogste score van 100 punten. Bijzonder zijn de ‘La La’-wijnen. Deze zijn afkomstig van de 3 toplocaties ‘La Turque', ‘La Landonne’, en 'La Moulin'.
Guigal is de pionier wat betreft de "single vineyards" in Côte Rôtie. Uit zijn drie bekendste wijngaarden "La Landonne", "La Mouline" en "La Turque" komen de meest gewilde en befaamde wijnen van de wereld.Het Guigal verhaal start in 1924, als Etienne Guigal als 14 jarige begint te werken in de kelders van Vidal Fleury. Tegen 1946 is hij reeds enige tijd keldermeester en vind hij het tijd worden om een eigen bedrijf op te richten.Dat geschiedde in Ampuis, gelegen in het hart van de appellatie Côte Rôtie. Uit zijn drie bekendste wijngaarden "La Landonne", "La Mouline" en "La Turque" komen de meest gewilde en befaamde wijnen van de wereld.Het Guigal verhaal start in 1924, als Etienne Guigal als 14 jarige begint te werken in de kelders van Vidal Fleury. Tegen 1946 is hij reeds enige tijd keldermeester en vind hij het tijd worden om een eigen bedrijf op te richten.Dat geschiedde in Ampuis, gelegen in het hart van de appellatie Côte Rôtie. In 1961 voegt zoon Marcel zich bij het bedrijf. Hij heeft de huidige leiding bij Guigal en zijn zoon Philippe, 3e generatie, is verantwoordelijk voor het productieproces vande wijnen. Guigal maakt "simpel" wijnmaken geniaal. Ze werken volledig organisch in de wijngaarden, hanteren lage opbrengsten en er vindt geen interventie in de kelders plaats. Kort samengevat wordt er gewerkt met respect voor de natuur en passievoor de wijn. Naast de "La, La, La" wijnen zijn Côte Rôtie "Château d'Ampuis", Condrieu "La Doriane" en de L'Ermitage "Ex Voto" nog enkele kroonjuwelen van het domein.
