Didier Dagueneau is een wereldberoemde Franse wijnmaker die zijn stempel heeft gedrukt op de Pouilly-Fumé. Hij overleed in 2008, maar zijn zoon Benjamin die al jaren bij zijn vader in het bedrijf zat nam met dezelfde passie en hetzelfde talent het bedrijf over. Iedere wijnliefhebber kent de schitterende Pouilly-Fumé’s van Domaine Dagueneau. Ze behoren tot de beste en meest gezochte Sauvignon Blanc wijnen en staan op de kaart van ieder serieus sterrenrestaurant. De rolls royce onder de Pouilly Fumé. Hier kunnen ook wij maar enkele flessen van verkrijgen. Dit door de simpele reden dat er maar een zeer beperkt aantal flessen worden geproduceerd en dit dan onder alle top wijnhandelaars over de gehele wereld wordt verspreidt. De Silex is wel de meest bijzonder uitvoering.
De Silex wordt alleen geproduceerd uit plots hoog gelegen op de hellingen van Saint Andelain en slechts uit wijngaarden die grote hoeveelheden silex (klei/leisteen) bezitten. De wijnstokken hier variëren 20-50 jaar en worden gesnoeid tot extreem lagere rendementen dan in de andere wijngaarden. De wijn wordt opgevoed op eiken houten vaten (450/600 liter) en natuurlijk op de beroemde eigen vaten van Dagueneau die een sigaar vorm hebben. De Silex is de absolute premier Grand Cru onder de Pouilly Fumé
Een heerlijk intens bouquet van bloemen en harsachtige kruiden stijgt op uit het glas van Dagueneau Fume de Pouilly Silex vooruitlopend op de bitterzoete aanwezigheid van mediterrane kruiden en witte bloemen met citrus tonen. Dit alles eindigt met een indrukwekkende finale. Deze uitzonderlijke pouilly fumé heeft vanzelfsprekend de unieke mineraliteit die de wijn van Dagueneau zo uniek en gewild maakt. De Silex is wellicht de meeste bijzondere en gewilde Pouilly Fumé. De Silex is extreem schaars en er kan nog meer van genoten worden als het lukt om deze nog enige tijd te laten rusten en dan wordt het optimaal genieten.

The 2022 Silex is not a lot of fun upon release; dry and tense, it really needs time to mellow. There's flesh from the clay element of its clay-flint soils, which is felt on entry but tightens up as it moves through the mouth. This remains a wine of drive, firmness and upright structure; it speaks of the place it comes from rather than its variety. Aromatics are almost a forgotten element; this is a wine about structure and texture. There is a lemony, wild goat cheese-like note and a distinct flinty whiff. SIlex, after all, means flint in French.

The life and now legend of Didier Dagueneau put the otherwise unremarkable village of Saint-Andelain on the map. Dagueneau died at age 52 in the ultralight plane he was flying, and the whole wine world mourned his passing. His two children, Louis-Benjamin and Charlotte took over the domaine. Still, you'll meet the winemaker Jean-Philippe Agisson on a visit. The Dagueneau wines blew the market away when they were first released, and they remain a benchmark in Pouilly Fumé, but the gap between Dagueneau and the rest of the field is not the gulf it was when he burst on the scene although the price tag would suggest otherwise.
Dagueneau’s inspiration for Silex, his most famous cuvée, was Marcel Guitton, the original single vineyard Sancerre producer, who first put silex (flint) on the wine label. Today, it is the most important wine in the range in terms of volume produced. Despite the warm, dry conditions of 2022, it is almost reminiscent of a tight, dry Riesling with a clear terroir rather than varietal character. It needs time in bottle to relax. These are wines made within the boundaries of the Pouilly Fumé appellation. Still, they have been labeled as Vin de France since the 2017 vintage following the appellation tasting panel’s rejection of a wine. The taut, precise and mineral Monts Damnés cuvée (planted in 2002) remains under the Sancerre appellation, and the 2022 vintage is rather closed on release. Still, it shows a tenderness and prettiness that Pouilly-Fumé does not naturally provide. The wines are all made in the same way to highlight the different sites, whether it’s the one-third marl and two-thirds flint component of the ‘entry’ wine Blanc, etc. or the richer clays of Buisson Renard, which gives the wine rounded shoulders. In 2022, the latter offers ripeness and depth yet retains a sense of line and length, even a salty character. The Pur Sang cuvée hails from the village of Saint Laurent l'Abbaye, about 5km northeast of the domaine, and is perhaps the most distinctive cuvées when tasting a full Dagueneau flight. The parcel has a chalky bedrock overlaid by flint pebbles, making for well-draining soils and producing real finesse, clarity and tension. In 2022, it retains tangy green herbs (dill) and green orange, and on release, it’s a little oaky, needing further time in bottle to fully integrate. Yet it has real class, and patience will be rewarded. All the wines mature in 20-25% new oak (demis-muids, cigars) and typically spend 8-10 months in stainless steel afterward before bottling.

The 2022 Silex is a clean, crisp and pure expression of the 4.5ha vineyard around the Dagueaneau winery in the modest village of Saint-Andelain. It has a minerally steely rod that pierces the wine's light-bodied core, providing backbone and a sense of being upright, like a soldier standing to attention. In short, it has a massive sense of purpose and a citrusy, pure finish.
