Penfolds is Australiƫ's oudste en meest iconische wijnhuis met een geschiedenis en erfenis die de reis weerspiegelt van het land van koloniale nederzetting naar het moderne tijdperk. Het wijnhuis werd in 1844 opgericht door Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold die samen met zijn vrouw geƫmigreerd was van Engeland naar Zuid-Australiƫ om daar zijn uit Frankrijk verkregen wijnstokken te planten op Magill Estate. De reden hiervoor was niet om de beste wijn van Australiƫ te maken, maar om een middel te vinden tegen bloedarmoede. Christopher geloofde in de medicinale werking van wijn en gebruikte dit in zijn huisartsenpraktijk die in reputatie toe nam.
De Australische wijnindustrie, en dus ook Penfolds, veranderde dramatisch met de komst van wijnmaker Max Schubert die wereldberoemde Grange en Bin wijnen bedacht. In 1988 werd Max Schubert uitgeroepen tot 'Man of the year' door Decanter Magazine en Penfolds Grange 1955 staat inmiddels vermeld als nationaal erfgoed. De Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz heeft Barossa Shiraz op het hoogste niveau gebracht. Stilistisch is RWT eigentijds, weelderig en verfijnd. Een interessant contrast met de gevestigde Grange, die een meer geconcentreerde, gespierde en assertievere stijl heeft. RWT is gemaakt van Barossa Valley shiraz-druiven die voornamelijk zijn geselecteerd vanwege hun aromatische eigenschappen, rastypische eigenschappen, fijne tannines en zachte textuur. Rijping op Frans eikenhout zorgt voor een ander contrast met Grange.

Sourced only from the Barossa Valley, RWT is aged exclusively in French oak, giving it two major points of difference from the rest of the Penfolds range. Always a sexy, voluptuous wine (and admittedly a personal favorite), the 2018 RWT Shiraz ratchets that up to new heights in a great Barossa vintage, boasting layers of berry-like fruit, refined vanilla shadings and baking-spice notes, plus more exotic elements like star anise and cocoa powder. It's full-bodied and plush without being unstructured in any way, with a lingering, complex finish and the concentration to age two decades or more.
Even via videoconferencing software and the sometimes glitchy technology of the internet, the infectious enthusiasm of Penfolds's chief winemaker, Peter Gago, comes through. Given the quality of what's in the bottle, his excitement seems warranted. "It's one of the strongest releases since I've been here," he said. "And I've been here 31 years." The headlines in most media will no doubt zero in on the release of G4āa $3,000 blend of the 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2016 vintages of Grange in undisclosed proportions, although Gago would allow that there's "double-digit percentages of each one." The 2016 Grange is similarly excellent, at less than one-third the price. For most consumers, the biggest news is the superb quality of the 2018 wines, starting with the $40 reds (Bin 138 Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro, Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz and the Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz) and extending up through the range into the Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz and RWT Shiraz. If you're an inveterate Penfolds collector, you might see about putting in reservations for the 2018 St Henri and Grange now. Big, corporate-owned wineries often take flak for being recipe-driven and not always treating their growers well, yet these winesāwhile they do share a certain "Penfolds style"āall show reasonably clear distinctions when tasted together. Gago also pointed out that the Gersch familyāwhose grapes appear in the 2016 Bin 111A (released last year) and 2016 Grangeārecently delivered their 100th consecutive vintage to the Penfolds winery. Given that Penfolds produces relatively large volumes of many of these wines (there are more than 18,000 cases of the Bin 389 for the American market alone, and nearly 900 cases of Grange for the US), it deserves enormous credit for flying the Australian flag and backing it up with high-quality wines.

This has a very attractively fresh, showy feel to the nose with aromas of ripe red cherries, blackberries, goji berries and redcurrants, as well as red plums and some wild-herb and licorice notes on offer, too. Very expressive and fragrant. The palate has a super intense and powerful delivery of ripe red-cherry and plum flavors and immaculately fresh French oak (64% new) that really clasps and holds the finish long. The tannins are so ripe and well positioned. Drink over two decades.

The bold, expansive 2019 Grange (97% Shiraz, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon) spent 19 months in larger new American Oak and is powerful and expressive as it delivers a dense core of coca, blackberry and baked terracotta aromas, all well backed by toasted coconut oak. Mouth-filing, expansive and seriously tannic, it then delivers waves of dark berry flavor laced with touches of spice, leading to a rich, muscular finish. Itās built for the long haul, so donāt even think of opening for at least a decade.
