In 1984 kochten Rita Tua en haar man Virgilio een landgoed in Suvereto waar twee hectaren wijngaard bijhoorde. Aanvankelijk hadden ze niet het idee om een topdomein uit de grond te stampen, maar hun meticuleuze zorg voor deze kleine wijngaard leidde razendsnel tot een cultstatus binnen Toscane. Omdat hun werk zo succesvol bleek, kochten ze voortdurend wijngaarden bij en anno 2014 is het domein uitgebreid tot 30 hectare. Toen Vergilio in 2010 overleed, kwam dochter Simena met haar man Stefano Frascolla aan het dagelijkse roer van het domein te staan. Ondertussen was de goede faam van het domein wereldwijd gemaakt zeker toen parker de wijn een 100 uit 100 punten gaf.
Tua Rita levert wederom een ongelooflijke editie van zijn legendarische Merlot van 'Coastal Tuscany'. De Redigaffi is een mooie, elegante en expressieve geweldenaar De Tua Rita 2012 Redigaffi is een andere mijlpaal-vintage die een nieuw hoofdstuk opent in de tijdlijn van deze iconische wijnmakerij in Suvereto aan de Toscaanse kust. Luca's voetafdruk is duidelijk zichtbaar als die meer voor de hand liggende eikenhouten tonen plotseling verdwijnen, waardoor er ruimte ontstaat voor zwart fruit, gedroogde pruimen en stroperige zwarte bessen. De wijn vertoont desondanks een inktzwarte donkere kleur en hoewel de textuur genereus en elegant is. Na wat walsen komen de aroma's van mediterrane kruiden en gedroogde bessen

This vintage was entirely made by Luca D'Attoma. The Tua Rita 2012 Redigaffi is another milestone vintage that opens a new chapter in the timeline of this iconic winery in Suvereto on the Tuscan Coast. Luca's footprint is evident as those more obvious oak tones suddenly disappear, giving space to black fruit, dried plum and syrupy blackcurrant. The wine shows an inky dark color nonetheless, and although its texture is generous and elegant, Redigaffi is suddenly void of those more obvious toasted oak influences. As a result, you gain a bigger window on some of the territorial aromas of Mediterranean herb and dried berry that we will find again in the vintages to follow.

The 2012 Redigaffi jumps from the glass with explosive dark blue/blackish fruit. Rich, voluptuous and impeccably textured in the glass, the 2012 boasts massive depth and concentration, yet retains tons of freshness. Silky tannins round out a finish laced with melted road tar, herbs and leather. For such a big wine, the Redigaffi is remarkably complex and nuanced. The 2012 was aged in 100% new, thick-staved Darnajou barrels, which are seldom seen in Italy but widely used throughout Napa Valley and elsewhere. In some recent vintages I have slightly preferred the Syrah over the Redigaffi, but in 2012 the wines are both fabulous. Simply put, the 2012 Redigaffi is a stunner.

The Tua Rita 2012s were fabulous when I tasted them from barrel. They are every bit as compelling from bottle. The growing season brought with it warm August scirocco winds and an early harvest. Winemaker Luca D'Attoma has returned to Tua Rita with a different approach that, among other things, favors gentler extraction and less new oak influence. The result is wines that boast extraordinary purity of fruit to match the trademark opulence that is such a signature of Suvereto. Readers who haven't tasted Tua Rita in a few years owe it to themselves to do so. These are some of the best wines I have ever tasted from Tua Rita, one of Tuscany's small, family-owned reference-points.

Another dazzling 2012 from Tua Rita, the Redigaffi is a pure pleasure to taste. Bright, floral and delineated, the 2012 is exceptionally beautiful. The aromas and flavors are so pure and resonant. This is another wine with a bright future and tons of potential.

This is a terrific set of wines from Tua Rita. Proprietor Stefano Frascolla aims to make wines that drink well early, an approach that has worked beautifully for him over the years. More recently, though, Frascolla has made a determined move towards wines of more finesse, which readers can get a sense of by checking out the entry-level 2012 reds, both of which are terrific. The rest of the 2012 range, which I tasted from barrel, is incredibly promising. These are the first wines made entirely by consulting oenologist Luca D'Attoma who is back at Tua Rita after a number of years. It is of course quite early, but 2012 could very well turn out to be one of the most compelling vintages made at Tua Rita. Frascolla describes 2010 as an excellent year at the outset, but more uneven later in the season, especially during August, which was not especially sunny. The 2011 season got off to an early start, but the harvest ended up being ahead of schedule only by about a week in a year Frascolla describes as behind defined by events simply having been moved forward in the calendar. Even though 2011 has a reputation for being a warm vintage, Frascolla describes 2012 as hotter, but with greater diurnal swings. Those qualities certainly come through in the wines. The 2010s have firmer tannins and require some bottle age, while the 2011s are more voluptuous and layered, even if they had just been bottle at the time of my visit. As for the 2012s, they may turn out to be some of the very finest wines ever made at Tua Rita.

In 1984 realiseerden Rita en Virgilio hun levenslange droom door het onroerend goed te kopen dat Tua Rita werd. Het landschap en de gebouwen op dit terrein waren slechts een setting om in contact met de natuur te leven terwijl ze hun geliefde land bebouwden. Hun overweldigende passie voor wijn veranderde eigenlijk hun plannen. De oorspronkelijke twee hectare wijngaarden zijn zorgvuldig gecultiveerd sinds het begin, deze rigoureuze en gepassioneerde zorg bracht Tua Rita samen onder de meest succesvolle producenten. In minder dan tien jaar hadden ze het landgoed uitgebreid tot negen hectare, toen twintig; Tegenwoordig omvat de totaliteit van de aangeplante wijnstokken dertig hectare. De groei werd gedreven door het blijvende enthousiasme van Rita en Virgilio en een steeds dieper bewustzijn van het potentieel van dit landgoed in het gebied tussen de Tyrreense Zee en de Colline Metallifere, bekend als Val di Cornia.
Aan de ene kant groeiden het landgoed en de kelder gestaag, gedreven door de extreme toewijding van Rita en Virgilio. Aan de andere kant, dankzij Stefano Frascolla, getrouwd met de dochter Simena van de eigenaar, breidde de naamsbekendheid van de wijnmakerij zich snel uit. Simena raakte ook betrokken bij het familiebedrijf na de dood van Virgilio in 2010. De naam van het landgoed is afgeleid van de omkering van de voor- en achternaam van Rita Tua.
De instapwijn van het domein is ‘Rosso dei Notri’, een bijzonder smakelijke IGP gebaseerd op sangiovese, cabernet sauvigon, merlot en syrah. ‘Perlato del Bosco’ is dan weer een pure sangiovese onder IGP-vlag. De signature wine van het domein is ‘Giusto di Notri’, gewoonweg een verbluffende Bordeauxblend van cabernet sauvigon, merlot en cabernet franc. Ten slotte volgen nog een pure syrah en merlot (‘Redigaffi’) om het rijtje te vervolledigen. Deze laatste twee wijnen behoren tot de allerbeste wijnen van heel Italië, zelfs van de hele wereld. Helaas niet goedkoop, maar van een ongeziene complexiteit, intensiteit en vooral een uitmuntende evenwichtige structuur met eindeloze afdronk.
