Domaine du Clos de Tart is a winery located in the Côte de Nuits region, Burgundy. This estate is especially famous for its exceptional Grand Cru vineyard, Clos de Tart, known for producing some of the world's finest Pinot Noir.

History of Domaine du Clos de Tart

The history of Clos de Tart dates back to the 12th century, when the vineyard was first established. It is learned that the monks of the nearby Tart Abbey, which no longer exists, planted the vineyard. The monks recognized the exceptional quality of the terroir and the vines cultivated on the property. Over the centuries, Clos de Tart has changed owners several times. It passed through several private owners, some of whom expanded the vineyard's holdings. In 1932, the Mommessin family acquired the estate from the Marey-Monge family, and they have been the managers of the domain for generations. The Mommessin family, especially Jacques Mommessin, played an important role in the history of the domain. Under his leadership, the estate's wines gained international recognition for their quality and the unique expression of the vineyard. In 1939, Clos de Tart was officially classified as a Grand Cru vineyard, in recognition of its superior terroir and wine quality. This classification is the highest designation for vineyards in Burgundy.

In 2017, François Pinault, the owner of Château Latour and the luxury group Kering, acquired Domaine du Clos de Tart. This acquisition was significant in the world of fine wine as it reflected Pinault's commitment to preserving and developing this iconic producer. Clos de Tart has always been known for its commitment to traditional winemaking practices. The estate values the use of wooden barrels for fermentation, long-term maturation in oak barrels and the unique terroir of the vineyard reflected in the wines.
