Terroir in the Rhône

The Grape Varieties of the Rhône

There is also a little more variety for white grape varieties than in the North.

Subregions of the Rhône

Northern Rhone

Côte-Rôtie, meaning 'roasted slope', is one of the most famous sub-regions in the Northern Rhône. Primarily associated with Syrah, Côte-Rôtie is known for producing elegant, perfumed and age-worthy red wines. Some of the best Côte-Rôtie's are made from a blend of Syrah and a small percentage of Viognier.

Hermitage is also home to white wines made from Marsanne and Roussanne. The red Hermitage's are full and rich, with notes of dark fruit, spices and a characteristic smokiness.

Tavel is known exclusively for the production of dry rosé wines. These wines are highly regarded for their structure, fruity character and deep color. Tavel rosés are considered some of the best rosé wines in the world.

Côtes du Rhône Villages. This is a collective name for various municipalities within the Southern Rhône that meet higher quality standards. Wines from Côtes du Rhône Villages are typically red blends or white wines based on Grenache, and offer good value for money.
