Description
Behind every precious drop of Krug lies the dream of a visionary. A man who, long before anyone else, understood that the essence of Champagne is pleasure. More than 170 years ago, Joseph Krug broke with existing conventions and followed his own vision. He wanted to make the most refined, consistent Champagne. Year after year, regardless of the climatic unpredictability. This daring experiment by Joseph proved to be a victory over himself and he succeeded in making Champagne like never before. Like never before. To this day, the House of Krug breathes its enduring philosophy: Creating only prestige Champagnes since 1843. It is the only house that has made only Ultra-Premium Champagnes every year since 1843. An ideal gift. Makes celebrations and special occasions even more special. It takes more than twenty years to make Krug Grand Cuvée, a blend of more than 120 wines from at least ten different years. The richest Champagne in the world with exceptional finesse.
Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition was created around the 2016 harvest, a year with such contrasting weather conditions that it became a caricature of the climatic pendulum. An extremely wet spring, with 70% more rainfall than normal between April and June, made work in the vineyards difficult and increased disease pressure. Mild weather followed from flowering, allowing the vineyards to recover, with a heat wave at the end of ripening. The marathon harvest took place from 9 September to 2 October and produced classic grapes in good health and wines with great expression and character, regardless of grape variety or origin.
To create this Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée, the cellar master wanted to accentuate the elegantly diverse aromatic expressions of the year with reserve wines from different plots from 10 other years, giving it a unique fullness of flavors and aromas that is impossible to express with the wines of a single year. The careful attention to the vines and Krug's unique respect for the individual character of each plot and its wine made possible the depth of expression of this Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée.
In total, 42% of the final blend was made up of reserve wines from the House’s extensive library, bringing the breadth and roundness so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. The final composition of this 72-Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée is 44% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay and 20% Meunier.
The Krug Grande Cuvee Brut Edition 172 has a light golden color and fine, lively bubbles,Aromas of blossoming flowers, ripe, dried and citrus fruits, as well as marzipan and gingerbread. Flavors of hazelnut, nougat, candy sugar, jelly and citrus fruits, almonds, brioche and honey.
FACT:
The Grande Cuvée has no fixed recipe and can be different every year. That also makes it no ordinary non-vintage champagne. In the pursuit of more transparency, Krug has had its own app developed and they provide more information than most other houses about their champagne. By scanning the Krug ID on the back of the Krug Grande Cuvée champagne with your smartphone (or manually entering it on the website of the house) you will find all kinds of facts about the champagne you have in your hands. For example, you will find the date of the disgorgement and how many wines the champagne is composed of.
FACT: In the tab 'Attachments' you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful wine. We will automatically send you this when you order this wine. The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to collect the wine you will often also receive a nice discount. You will see your discount immediately when you choose 'Collection' on the checkout page. We are located in Dordrecht almost next to the A16 with plenty of parking. Click here for our address.

The new Krug release, the NV Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition, based on the 2016 vintage and comprising 11 vintages in total (the oldest is 1998), is outstanding. It reveals a complex, slightly spicy bouquet of white fruits, beeswax, marzipan, hazelnuts, dried herbs, ripe orchard fruits and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated on the palate, it has a subtly spicy entry, an enrobing and layered texture and a fleshy core of fruit framed around a perfectly balanced, fresh and mineral finish. Crafted primarily from Pinot Noir (44%) and complemented with 30% Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Meunier, it was disgorged in the first quarter of 2023 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter. Keep it for 5-10 years.
When I met Julie Cavil, Krug’s Chef de Caves, in July, the extensive construction at Joseph—the name the house has given to the new winery in the heart of Ambonnay—was nearing completion. During the visit, I had the opportunity to taste the latest rendition of the cuvée, the 172ème Edition, based on the 2016 vintage, alongside some of the oldest cuvées and the newly released Clos d’Ambonnay from the 2008 vintage.

A very chalky, citrusy and lemon-scented nose here with lemon meringue and fine minerally aromas too. The darker, more savory and nutty aromas are pushed to the background. Hints of pepper too; this is less evolved. The palate has a creamy, supple and fleshy core of stone fruit flavors, yellow peaches and white nectarines. The nose has swirling spice notes, while the acidity is long, very even and very precise. The sherbet-like texture arrives through the finish. Density with lightness, this is quite an art. Drink now or hold for 10 or more years. This is based on 2003, which shows the philosophy of making the best wine every year as Grande Cuvée. Krug ID 313048

From: Champagne: The 2024 Spring Preview and Fall Additions (Dec 2024)
The NV Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition is a gracious, sublime Champagne. Light citrus notes, white flowers, spice, marzipan and chamomile inflections all run through this delicate, nuanced Grande Cuvée. The 172eme is a Champagne of understatement and class that is very much a reflection of the base year. Brisk acids pull it all together. The Grande Cuvée is often quite accessible on release, but this is an Edition I would cellar for at least another year or two. It’s a fine effort from Krug. The 172ème Édition is a blend of 44% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 20% Meunier based on 2016 with reserve wines back to 1998. Disgorged: Winter 2022-2023. Krug ID: 123003.

This recent tasting with Olivier Krug provided a terrific opportunity to run through several Champagnes, including the new 2011 Vintage and a handful of prior releases. All things considered, the 2011 is a very good Champagne in a challenging year in which many tête de cuvées were not released.

Krug is a floating and prestigious champagne based in the Champagne region of France. The "House of Krug", often simply referred to as Krug, is renowned for producing some of the world's finest and most luxurious Champagnes.
History of Krug
Krug was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary German immigrant who sought to create the most widely distributed champagne possible. He strongly believed in the producer of Champagne of consistent quality, proven by the weather conditions from year to year. The Krug family carried on the legacy and passed on their expertise from generation to generation. Krug has been in the family for years. It was managed by members of the Krug family until the 1960s and today it is part of the LVMH group but remains active with an emphasis on tradition and quality. They adhere to a philosophy of creating Champagnes that are based on the character of each specific vintage and that express the terroir of the vineyards. They are also known for their blending expertise, often incorporating a range of reserve wines into their cuvées to maintain a consistent house style.
Champagnes from Krug
Krug shows a great range of Champagnes, the most famous of which is their "Krug Grande Cuvée". Considered their flagship Champagne, this non-vintage blend is made with a blend of over 120 different wines from multiple vintages. Krug also has vintage Champagnes, including their famous "Krug Vintage". In addition to their famous cuvées, Krug also produces numerous single-vineyard Champagnes. "Krug Clos du Mesnil" and "Krug Clos d'Ambonnay" are made from grapes sourced from specific walled vineyards and are very popular among collectors and connoisseurs. Krug champagnes are known for their aging potential. This producer recommends aging their Champagnes so that the complex flavors and aromas can fully develop. Some connoisseurs enjoy Krug Champagnes after decades of cellaring.
