EXCLUSIVE - DELIVERY SPRING 2028
Alter Ego de Palmer has long ceased to be merely the second wine of Château Palmer. Within Margaux, this wine has established its own position, with a style that is more accessible than the grand vin, yet still clearly bears Palmer's signature. The 2025 reveals a refined and balanced side, shaped by a warm growing season and rain that fell at precisely the right time. The result is a Margaux with ripe concentration, refined tannins, and a remarkably soft texture.
The 2025 vintage of Alter Ego de Palmer
After a challenging 2024, the 2025 growing season began with a mild and relatively dry winter. As a result, vegetative growth started early, with rapid development of the Merlot. The spring was sunny and dry, ensuring prosperous flowering and good fruit set. From June onwards, the vineyard faced an increasing water shortage, leading to smaller and more concentrated grapes.
August brought an intense heatwave with several days exceeding 35 degrees. However, the grapes remained remarkably well-balanced thanks to their thick skins and healthy structure. A welcome period of rain later in the season brought cooling and refinement. As a result, freshness was preserved and the grapes developed a softer texture. The harvest began exceptionally early, starting on September 4, and continued until September 26. With a yield of only 20 hectoliters per hectare, 2025 ranks among the smallest harvests of recent years.
Grapes and vinification of Alter Ego de Palmer 2025
The Alter Ego de Palmer 2025 blend consists of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. This is a striking Cabernet-driven blend for Margaux and lends the wine extra tension, structure, and aromatic precision. The Merlot brings softness and roundness, while Petit Verdot adds subtle spiciness and extra depth.
At Château Palmer, work is carried out with great precision in both the vineyard and the cellar, with close attention to plot selection and optimal ripeness. Thanks to low yields and the excellent condition of the grapes, it was possible to work particularly selectively in 2025. This translates into a wine of high concentration, without loss of elegance.
Flavor profile and food pairing of Château Palmer Alter Ego
The 2025 Alter Ego de Palmer is expected to display a classic Margaux profile with modern precision. Think of aromas of black cherries, cassis, and ripe plums, combined with floral nuances, graphite, cedar, and refined spices. On the palate, the wine is smooth and silky, with ripe tannins and a long, elegant finish.
The relatively high presence of Cabernet Sauvignon provides extra freshness and length, allowing the wine to pair beautifully with refined meat dishes. Think of rosé roasted rack of lamb, tournedos with a subtle red wine sauce, or veal ribeye. The refinement of Alter Ego also shines through with dishes featuring truffle, mushrooms, or slow-cooked duck.
Anyone looking for a Margaux with the finesse of Château Palmer, but slightly more accessible in its youth, will find in Alter Ego de Palmer 2025 a particularly interesting wine with both charm and depth.

Parker
RP (91-93) The 2025 Alter Ego de Palmer unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and violets, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated palate defined by lively acids and plenty of sweet, powdery tannin. Checking in at 13% alcohol, it's a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. The low yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare might shock other estates, but Palmer has become much more habituated to such numbers in recent years.

Vinous
(94-96) The 2025 Alter Ego is bold, juicy and super expressive right out of the gate. A wine of total pleasure and seduction, this will drink beautifully with minimal cellaring. Soft, plush contours wrap around a core of red plum, mocha, cedar, espresso and cinnamon. All the elements are so well balanced. Floral top notes and a kick of blood orange perk up the brilliant finish. This is such a classy, polished wine—an especially fine Alter Ego. The blend is 54% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Drinking Window: 2033 - 2055 - By Antonio Galloni on April 2026
(92-94) The 2025 Alter Ego, aged in 20% new oak for eight months then transferred into foudres, has a quite effervescent, sorbet-fresh bouquet with perfumed black cherry and cassis fruit, becoming more floral with touches of pressed violet mixed with blood orange. Real intensity. The palate is framed by supple and fluid tannins, but there is certainly backbone to this Alter Ego, with gentle but insistent grip towards the finish. It coheres beautifully in the glass, with ample length and is very refined. Lovely. Drinking Window: 2030 - 2055 - By Neal Martin on May 2026
Palmer was already one of the Médoc’s most picturesque châteaux before its wholesale renovation. That long-term project is now virtually complete, including a bistro. As for 2025, CEO Thomas Duroux explained: “The key points are the same as elsewhere: low fertility, heat wave in June that had an impact on the size of berries, a warm and dry summer until the end of August, and rain changing the game completely. There was aromatic, technological and phenolic ripeness. Usually, you have to push technological ripeness to achieve phenolic ripeness, but in 2025, they arrived together. We started picking on September 4, and in six days, all the Merlot was picked. The Cabernet was harvested from September 11 to 26, a little longer than usual. The Merlot surprised us, so there is more in the Grand Vin, around 55%. The blending process went pretty fast: we tasted the vats every day and made decisions based on our observations. The alcohol is 13% for the Alter Ego and 13.5% for the Palmer.”

Château Palmer is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux wine region. The 66 hectares of vineyards have a gravel soil and the vines overlook the Gironde River. The area with its rich ancient history and nourishing microclimate is a fantastic environment for the vines. Here they can flourish and grow under the passionate care of the people of Château Palmer. Behind every great wine is a great terroir. This is also the case at Château Palmer, which is located on a long strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde. The land is well drained, rich in the deposits of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. It is difficult soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grapes. Of course, the vines also need good care in order to perform optimally. And that is certainly entrusted to the employees of Château Palmer! Full of passion and love for the vines, they cultivate the demanding terroir. The people of this winery are more than just colleagues. Together they embrace the common core values of Château Palmer and are therefore extremely dynamic, curious, passionate, open-minded and determined. In short, they live for and with the vineyards.
